Book How to Write the History of a Bank

Download or read book How to Write the History of a Bank written by M. M. G. Fase and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The history of a bank is more than a chronicle of money-making; it should be both a personal history of shareholders, manager and employees, and at a macroeconomic level, a history of the organizations at the centre of national and international growth and recession. This volume comprehensively demonstrates the significance of banking history and its relations with social, political and economic history." "A wide range of leading European banking historians provide comments and practical advice on technical problems of research and writing, and discuss critically a variety of approaches they and their peers have used in their work. They bring years of experience and unrivalled expertise to bear on the complete spectrum of banking organizations, from individual institutions to central banks, and the relations between banking systems across international boundaries." "At a time when monetary union is a major issue on economic and political agendas all over Europe this book provides a much needed supra-national perspective on the reasons for, and the best practice in, the writing of banking history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Till Time s Last Sand written by David Kynaston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ____________________ The authorised history of the Bank of England by the bestselling David Kynaston, 'the most entertaining historian alive' (Spectator). 'Kynaston's aim is to provide a history of the Bank for the general reader and in this he triumphantly succeeds, providing a worthy complement to the notable series of books on different periods of the Bank's history ... wonderfully readable' Financial Times 'Not an ordinary bank, but a great engine of state,' Adam Smith declared of the Bank of England as long ago as 1776. The Bank is now over 320 years old, and throughout almost all that time it has been central to British history. Yet to most people, despite its increasingly high profile, its history is largely unknown. Till Time's Last Sand by David Kynaston is the first authoritative and accessible single-volume history of the Bank of England, opening with the Bank's founding in 1694 in the midst of the English financial revolution and closing in 2013 with Mark Carney succeeding Mervyn King as Governor. This is a history that fully addresses the important debates over the years about the Bank's purpose and modes of operation and that covers such aspects as monetary and exchange-rate policies and relations with government, the City and other central banks. Yet this is also a narrative that does full justice to the leading episodes and characters of the Bank, while taking care to evoke a real sense of the place itself, with its often distinctively domestic side. Deploying an array of piquant and revealing material from the Bank's rich archives, Till Time's Last Sand is a multi-layered and insightful portrait of one of our most important national institutions, from one of our leading historians. ____________________ 'The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street has been waiting for a biographer who could do justice to the richness of her story ... This is the work of a scholar with a gift for illuminating every square inch of each enormous canvas he chooses to paint ... Kynaston brings characters large and small to life' Literary Review 'full of human detail ... an exemplary narrative history, with the archives plundered judiciously and plenty of focus on people and their quirks ... rendered on an entertainingly human scale' The Times 'A triumph ... this portrait of the Bank of England really is fascinating, at times even gripping' Sunday Telegraph

Download or read book The History of Banks written by Richard Hildreth and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hildreth's important study of banking, published the same year as the financial disaster of 1837, a highly influential work that -helped to promote the growth of the free banking system in America-, scarce in original boards. Historian and journalist -Richard Hildreth is one of the more enigmatic figures in American intellectual history- . Following his studies at Harvard, Hildreth -was admitted to the bar in 1830, but he never practiced law. Instead, he turned to politics and journalism: first as a National Republican, then as a Whig- (ANB). A trip to the South prompted Hildreth to write his pioneering antislavery novel The Slave (1836), and in 1837 he published History of Banks, -which helped to promote the growth of the free banking system in America- (Encyclopaedia Britanica). Here Hildreth bluntly observes, -How does it happen that the banks get so much into debt How shall we limit the indebtedness of banks? Not by prohibitory statutes, which are always evaded when it is an object to evade them.- To Hildreth, banking is best -controlled and guided, by its own necessary laws-the Laws of Trade- (126, 136). -Published about the time of the great financial disasters of 1837, - History of Banks was early hailed as -an argument for the use of free banking with security to bill holders.- At his death Hildreth was eulogized as -one of the profoundest thinkers and ablest writers of the age- (New York Times).

Book A History of Virginia Banks and Banking Prior to the Civil War

Download or read book A History of Virginia Banks and Banking Prior to the Civil War written by William L. Royall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Virginia Banks and Banking Prior to the Civil War: With an Essay on the Banking System Needed Banking, according to modern methods, did not exist in Virginia prior to the year 1804. During all the Colonial period and, even more so, after the Revolution, voluntary associations, called unchartered banks, did a banking business, including the issue of currency notes. In the early part of the nineteenth century this busi ness had become a very extensive one, * and the unchartered banks Operated all over the State; but they rested entirely on individual effort, and the State had no part or lot in them. It would be as unprofitable now to follow them in the details of their operations as it would be to record the battles of the Kites and the Crows, from which John Milton turned with such disgust.
