Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Methods in Microscopy This book, as originally written, was intended for begin ners working privately without the assistance of experienced instructors and without the apparatus Of a well-equipped laboratory. It was, therefore, thought best not to include processes which require expensive accessory apparatus and a considerable outfit of chemicals. The complicated processes necessary for the best results with delicate tissues were also Omitted as beyond the needs of the mere beginner and as likely to discourage him in his first efforts. The favor with which the book has been received in the laboratories of several leading colleges has led to the addi tions which have been made in this edition to include the processes Of microscopic technique that are needed in such laboratories. While the book has been extended to meet the needs Of more advanced workers, it is believed that it is none the less adapted to the needs of beginners and private workers. The author wishes to make especial acknowledgment Of indebtedness for suggestions to Professor Frederick C. New combe, Of the University of Michigan, and to Professor F. Book How to Use and Care for the Microscope Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Use and Care for the Microscope Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Use and Care for the Microscope A microscope, - like any other instrument of precision, - cannot be made to do its best work without some knowledge on the part of the user as to how to keep it in perfect condition, and an intelligent understanding of its parts, their use and relations. The purpose of this little book is to bring before you some practical helps in clear concise form, which will enable you to obtain the best possible results when working with the microscope. We make no attempt to go into the optical principles involved in the microscope except in so far as it is necessary to direct in its use. For these we refer you to more pretentious works, - The Microscope, by Dr. S. H. Gage; The Microscope and its Revelations, by Carpenter & Dallinger. Let it be remembered that no amount of direction will take the place of good judgment and careful painstaking effort on your part, and that it is only the perfect adjustment of every part in relation to every other part which brings the best results. The neglect of one detail may destroy the virtues of all the others. It is with a desire to help and a hope that your work with the microscope may prove pleasant and profitable that we present this little volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Construction and Use of the MicroscopeThese motives have induced me to give the book a more popular form, as well as to make it as practically useful as possible. The theoretical portion, therefore, only contains the principles of Dioptrics and Catoptrics, without which the construction of the microscope could not be understood; and the section treating of these subjects is further limited to the explanation of the apparatus used at the present time, although I have appended, for the sake' of complete ness, an historical Sketch of the manner in which each part of the microscope is constructed and arranged. The instruc tions for the use of the microscope are given with the great est fulness, as constituting the most important section of the work and as the dioptric compound microscope is the one most used at present, I have limited my observations to that alone.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of the Microscope: A Handbook for Routine and Research Work For scientific work, it is desirable to get in the microscope the sharpest and most contrasty images possible with the apparatus at hand. There are several dozen adjustments, or variations of methods, each of which will add slightly to the perfection of the image in the microscope. Alone, each of these slight improvements may not seem worth making; but combined they may cause a decided difference in the brilliancy and crispness of the microscopical image. In this book, the most important of these methods have been brought together from the original papers, and to them have been added the results of the writer's experience gained in years of continuous work with the microscope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Microscope: The Construction, Theory and Use of the Microscope This work, which I bring before the reader with considerable diffidence, is the outcome of a wish expressed by several friends that I should make the attempt to write a book upon the Construction, Theory, and Use of the Microscope expressed in the simple language employed in Photomicrography. Two things seemed to encourage me: one was the gratifying way in which the last-mentioned brochure was dealt with by the critic, whose kindness in overlooking its many faults and failings had greatly impressed me; whilst the other was the fact - which gave me no small pleasure - that so many workers with camera and microscope had expressed themselves with such pronounced generosity as to the utility of its subject-matter. It was further pointed out, as an additional incentive to start upon the work, that a practical book on the Microscope, besides assisting the amateur, might meet a want much felt in the medical and other laboratories, where at present the lecturers and demonstrators have to waste much of their valuable time in teaching students the rudiments of the microscope by word of mouth. It is universally recognised that this knowledge could be acquired just as well from a book if a suitable one existed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Microscopy: Being a Handbook to the Microscope Every one who has to use the microscope must decide {for him self the question as to whether he will do so in accordance with a system of rule of thumb, or whether he will seek to supersede this by a system of reasoned action based upon a study of his instrument and a consideration of the scientific principles of micro s00pical technique. The present text-book has no message to those who are content to follow a system of rule of thumb, and to eke this out by blind trial and error. It addresses itself to those who are dissatisfied with the results thus obtained, and who desire to master the scientific principles of microscopy, even at the price of some intellectual effort.
