Book How to Go Almost Anywhere for Almost Nothing

Download or read book How to Go Almost Anywhere for Almost Nothing written by Maureen A. Hennessy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-12-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unimpressed with the few packaged tours that she experienced, the author launched upon the research of worldwide independent travel that would ultimately lead to the publication of How to Go Almost Anywhere for Nothing and to a new career as a writer on travel, consumer and women’s issues. She has traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, North Africa and America. --from the Introduction I began a quest for information on REALLY cheap travel. I researched an extraordinary amount of published material and then embarked upon many years of travel and research in the United States and abroad. I have now traveled extensively and at very little expense in Asia, North America, Europe and a bit in Africa. The scope of this particular volume will necessarily focus on areas with which I have the greatest familiarity. Southeast Asia remains a favorite because of the low ground costs, and the most detailed information will cover Asian ports of call such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, with some reference to specific destinations within Europe and the United States. My latest major trip was to Morocco, and that country is covered in this edition. In the United States, the largest port of entry cities will get the most attention, not only because three of my favorite cities fall into this category, but for the benefit of visitors from other lands. The principles outlined herein should pertain to travel almost everywhere and you will be able to apply them with just a little bit of courage and imagination.

Book Almost Anywhere

Download or read book Almost Anywhere written by Krista Schlyer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when your world ends? At twenty-eight years old, Krista Schlyer sold almost everything she owned and packed the rest of it in a station wagon bound for the American wild. Her two best friends joined her—one a grumpy, grieving introvert, the other a feisty dog—and together they sought out every national park, historic site, forest, and wilderness they could get to before their money ran out or their minds gave in. The journey began as a desperate escape from urban isolation, heartbreak, and despair, but became an adventure beyond imagining. Chronicling their colorful escapade, Almost Anywhere explores the courage, cowardice, and heroics that live in all of us, as well as the life of nature and the nature of life. This eloquent and accessible memoir is at once an immersion in the pain of losing someone particularly close and especially young and a healing journey of a broken life given over to the whimsy and humor of living on the road.

Book The World Between Two Covers Reading the Globe

Download or read book The World Between Two Covers Reading the Globe written by Ann Morgan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beguiling exploration of the joys of reading across boundaries, inspired by the author’s year-long journey through a book from every country. Ann Morgan writes in the opening of this delightful book, "I glanced up at my bookshelves, the proud record of more than twenty years of reading, and found a host of English and North American greats starting down at me…I had barely touched a work by a foreign language author in years…The awful truth dawned. I was a literary xenophobe." Prompted to read a book translated into English from each of the world's 195 UN-recognized countries (plus Taiwan and one extra), Ann sought out classics, folktales, current favorites and commercial triumphs, novels, short stories, memoirs, and countless mixtures of all these things. The world between two covers, the world to which Ann introduces us with affection and no small measure of wit, is a world rich in the kind of narratives that engage us passionately: we meet an irreverent junk food–obsessed heroine in Kuwait, an explorer from Togo who spent years among the Inuit in Greenland, and a former child circus performer of Roma background seeking sanctuary in Switzerland. Ann's quest explores issues that affect us all: personal, political, national, and global. What is cultural heritage? How do we define national identity? Is it possible to overcome censorship and propaganda? And, above all, why and how should we read from other cultures, languages, and traditions? Illuminating and inspiring, The World Between Two Covers welcomes us into the global community of stories.

Book Neanderthals to Nations

Download or read book Neanderthals to Nations written by John S. Hill Ph.D. and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-08 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neanderthals to Nations A History of Everyone By: John S. Hill Ph.D. Neanderthals to Nations is a one-stop read in understanding why the world is as it is today. The book starts off in the 21st century with the world suffering from developmental inequities, global violence, and climate change. It then explains how the architects of human destiny- geography, culture and technology- shaped the planet and its people to become what we are today. Starting fourteen billion years ago, the story takes the reader back to the present day, explaining how nations and people evolved to become what they currently are. Along the way, the reader discovers: · What “www” really stands for (and its not “worldwide web”); · How Confucius made China great; · The keys to the U.S. and China’s current governance systems in ancient Greece; · Religion; why the East is (still) inscrutable to the Western minds, how religion evolved and why it continues to be popular today; · The U.S. Constitution came from where?; · How the pope determined the cultural destiny of Latin America; · How the Suez Canal and oil remade the Middle East’s Future; · The evolution of country cultures: how the U.S. , British, French, German, Latin American, Chinese, Japanese and others came to be as they are today; · Why the Palestinians and Israel are at loggerheads, why 9/11 really happened and · How racism began and continues.

Book Of Mice Men and Microbes

Download or read book Of Mice Men and Microbes written by David R. Harper and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-06-28 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1993, a cluster of cases of a lethal disease among healthy young people brought the attention of the world to the southwestern deserts. A previously unknown disease was killing up to 80% of the people it infected. The reaction in the area and across the nation mixed fear, lack of information, and the struggles of doctors to save the victims of an unknown killer with hard science and the age old rhythmns of the desert. What came out was the story of a virus that had been killing since man arrived in the American continents, Hantavirus, with deadly relatives across the Americas and across the world. This book explains why and how the virus kills, and why it is still killing today. Why all of the science aimed at a virus identified back in 1993 has not brought a vaccine or a cure is part of the story, as is how that killer virus fits into the story of "new" diseases across the world. The story of hantavirus disease, what has happened since that first outbreak, and what the real risks are is laid out by an experienced scientist and an award winning journalist living and working in the area of the 1993 outbreak. Covers the full story of the recent hantavirus outbreak Includes interviews with survivors, and local reaction Presents the science in lay terms Places the event in the broader context of emerging diseases worldwide The only account which takes the reader beyond the initial outbreak in 1993-1994, bringing them up to late 1998 Discusses hantavirus disease in the U.S., Argentina, and Canada
