Book The Elementary School Subjects Vol 1

Download or read book The Elementary School Subjects Vol 1 written by Calvin N. Kendall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary School Subjects, Vol. 1: How to Teach the Fundamental Subjects Tms book discusses the teaching of the common fundamental subjects found in elementary schools. It also contains suggestions as to what should make up the course of study in these subjects, and it attempts to set forth some of the principles that should underlie methods of instruction and determine the selection of subject-matter. It is essentially a book for the use of teachers and supervisors of schools and for those who are preparing to be teachers. The subjects discussed consume by far the greater part of the time of both teachers and pupils in the elementary schools. To say that the teaching of these subjects should be as skillful as possible is a common place. Because of the difference in the quality of teaching, one class exercise in reading is of infinitely greater value than another class exercise. For the same reason, one school may be found to be inferior to another school, even in the same system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Commercial Subjects T he New Educator's Library presents in a convenient form that is likely to appeal to many specialist teachers and others whose interest lies in a select few of the aspects of Education much of the subject matter of The Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Education recently issued by the Publishers; in fact, the scheme is due in great measure to the suggestions of many readers of the latter work, pointing out the desirability of issuing in sectional form the authoritative contributions on the various subjects. It is hoped that these little books embodying, as they do, the results of research and experience of educationists and others of high distinction in their subjects, will serve a really useful purpose to teachers, to students, and to many others connected with or interested in educational matters. Book Method and Methods in the Teaching of English Classic Reprint

Download or read book Method and Methods in the Teaching of English Classic Reprint written by Israel Edwin Goldwasser and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method and Methods in the Teaching of English To affect the various motives that may prompt an author to add one more to the many books on methods of teaching that are now available, there seem to be two very good reasons why a new text on the teaching of English may be deemed unnecessary. In the first place, there are a number of excellent discussions of the general phases of the subject and of special branches, which are sound in principle and scholarly in analysis of the material. Secondly, in these days when so much is said in favor of allowing the initiative of the teacher to find full expression, any book which prescribes definite methods of teaching may be said to set itself against the trend of modern theory. Despite these considerations, however, I have long felt that there is a definite need for the kind of treatment of the subjects connected with the teaching of English in the elementary schools that I have given in this book. There is a real need of specific suggestions as to a rational mode of approaching and developing the work in English. Teachers are everywhere asking for directions which will give them not so much a model for direct imitation as a basis for intelligent self-criticism. This book aims to present a consistent method of work in all the branches of elementary English. While drawing freely from the various accepted texts, and adopting without hesitation many valuable suggestions from teachers and writers in all grades of the work, it claims consideration for this original feature: It aims to separate the teaching of technique from the teaching for appreciation and self-expression, and it seeks to found its methods upon a definite psychology of the learning process. No attempt has been made to exhaust every part of the subject or to be so definite as to make original thought on the part of the teacher unnecessary. Book The Teaching of General Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of General Science Classic Reprint written by William Lewis Eikenberry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of General Science Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been somewhat spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature-study in the elementary schools and that all are requiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Since 1900 there has been a greater increase in the percentage of students enrolled in science in the high schools than in any other subject with the one exception of English. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation of science. Book Principles of Secondary Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Secondary Education Classic Reprint written by Alexander James Inglis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Secondary Education In the construction of a book on the principles of second ary education one of two methods may be employed. A number of specialists may collaborate in the production of a book which consists of several more or less isolated treatises on various separate phases of secondary education. Such a method has many merits, but precludes the develop ment of a consistently constructive theory. On the other hand, when a single individual attempts to write a book covering a field as broad as that of secondary education, there are always two possible dangers: either the limitations of the individual may lead to superficial treatment and error, or unsupported personal opinion and bias may dominate. The first of these dangers is minimized when the writer refrains from attempting to deal with the details of teach ing appropriate to the various studies of the secondary school program and confines this attention to more funda mental principles. In this book the author deals with special studies only in connection with the broader matters of aims and values, together with the larger elements of method necessarily involved. A later volume in this series will deal with the principles of teaching in the secondary school and several volumes will deal with methods of teaching special subjects or groups of subjects. Book Special Method in Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Method in Arithmetic IT is our purpose in this volume to make plain to teachers in elementary schools the purpose of teach ing arithmetic, to outline fully a course of study based upon this controlling idea, and to discuss and illustrate the method of handling some of the chief topics. It is strictly a teacher's book, and not designed for use by children. It has been generally felt that arithmetic stands aloof from other studies, but the attempt is made here to show a very intimate and important relation to the other studies, one vital in fact to the proper plan and treatment of the whole subject. This volume is one in a series of special methods, as follows: Reading of English Classics, Primary Reading and Story Work, Geography, History, Ele mentary Science, Language, and Manual Arts. The course of study for the eight grades based on the plans worked out in these eight volumes is now in press and will appear in two volumes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching: Its Nature and Varieties This book does not profess to deal specifically with the teaching of the various subjects. It is rather an explanation of the processes involved in all forms of instruction, whatever the subjects may be. Hence it differs fundamentally from other pedagogical manuals, which for the most part treat the various branches of instruction from the point of view of the matter to be taught, the reasons for teaching it, and the special methods to be adopted. No teacher who is worthy of the name can afford to be ignorant of the inner nature of his art. True, some so-called teachers are. But these can only be likened to those mechanics who merely do what the engineer tells them to do, or what they see others doing, or what they blindly fall into by trial and error, without understanding the scheme according to which the work is being done. While this arrangement works tolerably well in some branches of industry, it cannot do so in teaching. For here intelligent direction is necessary at every moment. And if the teacher is not something of an engineer in education as well as a mechanic, he will blunder through his work by rule of thumb, with only a tithe of the success which he might otherwise achieve. The "engineer" who visits him from time to time in the person of an inspector may criticise him and put him on good lines for a, brief period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of Teaching: An Observation Record Book The manual will be found serviceable also in cases where students for one reason or another may be carrying on observational studies singly instead of in groups. Those observing similar kinds of work, even though this work may be done by different teachers, may be brought together for conferences very much to the same purposes as in group studies. Individual studies of this kind will be productive of a wider range of data, although this plan presents elements of dith culty and waste which render it on the whole less serviceable. In so far as it may be used, however, specific problems in the mind of the student, and aids in the gathering of data relating thereto will be found the more important.
