Download or read book How to Teach Reading the Public Schools Classic Reprint written by S. H. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Reading the Public Schools This book is intended primarily as a manual or teachers of reading in the public schools. In the preparation of the work the author has borne in mind the chief needs of the teacher: First, that he should thoroughly understand how thought and feeling are expressed; and, second, that he should have a definite graded method of instruction, in which the simple precedes the complex, and in which one element, and one only, is presented at a time. The book is, therefore, an endeavor to assist the teacher of reading, by explaining the psychology of expression; by presenting a practical method of instruction; and by discussing certain general principles of literary interpretation. Though the main motive of the book has been to improve the teaching of reading in the public schools, the aim has also been to provide a text book for use in normal schools and classes in elocution. Portions of the book have already appeared in Principles of Vocal Expression and How to Read Aloud, the latter of which is now out of print. The reception accorded these books leads the author to hope that the present manual may meet with similar approval from his fellow teachers. Book How to Teach Reading and What to Read in School Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Teach Reading and What to Read in School Classic Reprint written by G. Stanley Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Reading, and What to Read in School How to teach children to read, and what they should read, are two of the oldest and most complicated, as well as most important problems of pedagogy. To begin with the first of these problems, there are two methods of teaching the art of reading: viz., the synthetic, which proceeds from letters or sounds to words, sentences, etc.; and the analytic, which begins with pictures, words, or sentences, and descends to visual or vocal elements. So long and so far as letters were named from real or fancied resemblances between the form of the letters and objects, the process of naming them no doubt facilitated learning, much as to call our large A a harrow, B an ox-yoke, etc., would now do. This latter, or even if a novice in Hebrew were to remember that mem is water, aleph an ox, nun a fish, etc., would be especially helpful in writing, which in modem methods often comes as a very early stage of language-teaching, and where a distinct name is helpful for each sign. Just when or by whom the school device of telling off the independent names of letters as a key to the spoken word (or spelling) was hit upon, is unknown. Of course, d-o-g really "spells" deogee, and not dog, any more than delta, omicron, gamma, does. Arbitrary in itself, spelling has naturally associated itself with harsh methods of teaching. Book New Haven Public Schools

Download or read book New Haven Public Schools written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Haven Public Schools: Suggestions and Directions for Teaching Reading in Primary and Grammar Schools The success of the teaching depends first, last, and all the time, upon the zest and enthusiasm and spirit which the teacher puts into the exercise. No subject needs more careful preparation than this one. Reading exercises are often merely formal and tiresomely mechanical; on the other hand, they are often full of life and spirit, the chil dren looking forward to them with eagerness, because the teacher, by her own deep interest and love of the subject, makes the lesson one of the most animated and enjoyable hours of the day. The teacher is earnestly advised to first read, herself, the entire book or selection, if it be one with which she is not familiar. It will then be more easily, skilfully, and intelligently taught. She will then feel the conscious ness of being master of the whole work. While she may not know all around, above, and below her subject, she will at least know through it. Book Teaching Reading in Ten Cities Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teaching Reading in Ten Cities Classic Reprint written by Eva D. Kellogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Reading in Ten Cities Perhaps no plan for helping teachers through an educational Journal has ever been a greater success than the series of Teach ing Reading in Ten Cities, which appeared last year in Primary Education. Everybody who is responsible for the teaching of little children is keenly interested in the problem of teaching them to read. The ways are numerous. The results record every shade of satisfaction and dissatisfaction known to teachers. Rumors of what was being done in this branch of instruction in other schools reached the teachers; but they could not go and see for them selves. For this reason the work of the primary schools in ten leading cities of the Union was brought to them by means Of this valuable series, prepared either by the primary supervisor or a leading teacher in each locality. The scheme became popular at once. Here was a chance to visit other schools and compare notes without leaving their own work. Many school principals used each instalment as it appeared as the text for a teachers' meeting for the study of teaching youngest children to read. The ten articles cover every prominent method or system for teaching reading to beginners now in use in our public schools, and primary teachers have found in them the help, the breadth, and the inspiration that the series was designed to give. Book Teaching to Read Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teaching to Read Classic Reprint written by James Laughlin Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching to Read There is no other subject in which the results have been so unsatisfactory as in reading, considering the amount of time devoted to it in school. The chief reason for the failure has been that the aim has been to train the race to read aloud instead of training it to read. The power of reading well means the power of getting thought from visible language rapidly, definitely and comprehensively. Very nearly all reading has to be done silently, yet in the past, the aim of the schools has been to train pupils to read aloud. Tested by the power of their pupils as a whole to read well aloud, or to read well silently, the work of the schools has been a lamentable failure. The teachers of the past believed that the way to train a child to be a good silent reader was to train him to read aloud. The reverse is true. The true way to make both good oral readers and good readers is to begin by making good silent readers. The aim in the past was to train pupils to read slowly; the true aim is to train them to read as fast as possible. The man who reads only two pages in the time in which he should be able to read three pages is handicapped for life. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method for Teaching Primary Reading There are habits of reading that the pupils should form in the Primary Grades. The most important at the outset are: The habit of looking to a word, phrase, or sen tence for its meaning. The habit of attacking a word with the as surance that, through knowledge of the sounds of letters and combinations of letters, the pupils can find out what it says. The one habit deals with the thought and the other with the form, but they must go hand in hand. To establish the child in these habits is the Primary Teacher's problem in Reading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Beginners to Read: Thought Method As reading is the most important subject to the primary child great care should be taken that the best method be employed in presenting it. The main object in teaching reading is to train the child to interpret the thoughts of others and to express them naturally as if they were his own. This is best done by the thought method. The child should never begin to read with less than a sentence. The teaching of words, and their meaning, sounds, etc., should be used as a means, only, in getting the thought, never as an end in themselves. As soon as the teacher becomes acquainted with the little folks, the first step is to get them to talk easily and naturally about familiar objects, things they have seen, etc., to answer questions correctly and intelligently and to express them selves in complete and connected sentences. This will not be found a difficult task as the children think in sentences and have talked at home and to their little companions in complete senten ces long before they entered school. An attempt, then, by the teacher to teach reading to little children by the a, b, c, word, phonic, or any method that takes from the thought is a great mis take. Some time should be spent in conversational lessons; then from three to four months in development work from the blackboard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Reading: A Manual for Teachers Using the Riverside Readers Reading is one Of mankind's greatest delights, as well as a main source Of information. The Riverside Primer is written with the belief that the very first reading may give delight to the beginner, besides furnishing him much information about many interesting things in his ever-expanding world; that in his very first book the child Should find the game and the rhyme, the dolly and the drum, loving thoughts of home, appreciative glimpses Of the nature and community worlds surrounding him. The approach to a reading lesson must focus the child's attention upon the central thought, helping him to find in the thought an expression of his own needs, desires, or interests. Unless he becomes seriously absorbed in the thought because Of this inherent interest, the lesson lacks that which is Of great est value, that which makes it really a reading lesson. Lessons in the Riverside Primer are SO closely related to child life that it is an easy matter to make a worthy approach; many lessons Offer a choice Of approaches; so that the teacher has an opportunity to vary her work as lessons are reviewed, or from year to year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Teaching Reading in Public Schools: Practical Essay Read Before the Teachers' Convention of the County of Brant, Ontario, May 31, 1879 Here is an adage, which In days long gone by, was frequently quoted to me by my father, * when we discussed theoretical professional points, and which I have come more and more to recognize as applicable to. The Art of Teaching generally, namely: that what is best administered is best. You may have a good plan, but fail by carelessness or inaptitude to produce good results; or you may have an inferior method, and yet, by carefulness and tact, achieve comparative success. I hope to show you, from my own experience, a system Of teaching Reading which is calculated to produce the best results if skillfully put in practice; and which I think cannot fail to work a large measure of improve ment under any circumstances. Book Essentials of Teaching Reading Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essentials of Teaching Reading Classic Reprint written by E. B. Sherman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Teaching Reading There seems to be no scarcity of thoroughly good manual of elocution, of expositions of primary methods, and of essays on the teaching of literature. Each field of work, excepting possibly that of methods in intermediate and grammar-school reading, seems to be satisfactorily covered by the material contained in a half-dozen books, each one of which touches but a single department. There seems to have been no book which includes those things in all the departments that are of practical value to the ordinary teacher. This book is planned to meet this need. Effort has been made to cover all that is of real use to the teacher in the many lines of reading work. Effort has been made to cover all the essential elements that the good teacher of reading should know, and to omit all that is not essential. It has been attempted to put under one cover at least the minimum of what the teacher of reading should know. No attempt has been made to invent novel methods, or to make the book a dictionary of devices. No good thing has been omitted because it is old. The authors feel pleased rather then chagrined when an experienced teacher says, "That plan is not new. I have been using it for years." As a matter of fact, all of the methods explained have been tested by experience. Part Three, including the chapters on Primary Methods, Parts of a Recitation and Assignment of the Lesson, Classification of Material, Obstacles to Good Expression, Use of the Dictionary, Articulation, and the Illustrative Lessons, is the most important part of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classics Old and New: A Series of School Readers Good expression in reading is the product of sympathy and understanding, and therefore, the child who likes to read is quite sure to take first rank as a good reader. The controlling purpose of Classics, Old and New is to inspire in children a love for reading, and thus, without their being conscious of the fact, induce in them the reading habit. This is about the best and safest of all habits. If we contrive to teach young people the mechanical art of reading, and fail, at the same time, to breed in them the impulse and desire to continue their education throughout life by reading, we have cheated them out of the best thing to be obtained by going to school. Good literature is an expression for the best of the world's activity, and the power latent in such literature to lift and en lighten the mind and spirit is greater than any other power, save, perhaps, the influences of home. The formal education of many of the children that will use this series of readers will cease with the elementary schools. This fact makes the prepara tion of the readers a very serious task, especially to one who knows children well enough to realize how difficult it is to know them at all. Shewmake Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Reading of Public-School Teachers, And, General Suggestions Concerning the Teaching of Music in the Grades A study of literature by types is perhaps the best method of mak ing a first-hand survey of the general field of good writing. Within each of the two general divisions, prose and poetry, there are several definite forms, including the prose types known as history, oratory, biography, the letter, the essay, the novel, and the short story; and the poetic forms called the epic, the lyric, the drama, and the ballad.* The benefits to be derived from reading and reflecting upon some of the best examples of these eleven literary types are in most cases too obvious to need elaboration here; but there are certain large effects that the careful reading of literature of the right kind pro duces, and concerning these a few suggestions may well be made. Some literature is read primarily for entertainment, with the avowed purpose of driving dull care away. One reader may be entertained best by the short story, another by the novel, another by the letter, While still another may find that poetry of a certain type Will lead to the sessions of sweet, silent thought that will rest the mind and relieve it of the cares of the day. A word of caution may be inserted at this point. Let it be remembered that in choos ing material that will entertain there is no need to go outside the bounds of real literature. Many great works have a strong narra tive element, but to appreciate their greatness we must look beyond the story and find qualities that are products less of the imagination than of the intellect.
