Book Fundamentals in Elementary Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamentals in Elementary Education Classic Reprint written by Claude A. Fhillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals in Elementary Education The subject matter of this book is a direct outgrowth of the experiences of the Department of Education in the State Normal School at Warrensburg, Missouri, in giving courses in Education to beginners in that subject. During the ten years of the experiment, the major portion of the material has been tried out in more than one hundred fifty classes, taught by well-trained teachers. The book is de signed primarily for students in Teacher-training Classes in Education in high schools, and in Elementary Courses in normal schools; and it is well adapted to Teachers' Reading Circles. It might well be used as an Introductory Course in Education in colleges or in College Courses in normal schools. The author has tried to keep in the foreground the function of the elementary school as the greatest single agency in a democracy for the education of its children, and, while no effort has been made to exhaust the topics concerning elementary schools, an attempt has been made to discuss the fundamental ones with considerable detail and thoroughness. Practically all of the Problems presented at the end of each chapter may be answered from the subject matter contained in the text, and the experiences of the teacher and students. The selected readings are intended chiefly for supplementary purposes, and for those students who have access to a good library. It is needless to state that the writer claims no large degree of originality for the volume, because he has drawn freely upon pedagogical literature as it relates to the elementary school. Book Class Room Method and Management Classic Reprint

Download or read book Class Room Method and Management Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Betts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Class-Room Method and Management The aim of education, and hence of any subject in the curriculum, is to be defined in terms (1) of fruitful knowl edge, (2) right attitudes, (3) applied skills. Hence the question for each subject becomes how to select, organize and present such material as will result in the desired knowl edge, attitudes and skills. The answer to this problem for any particular subject constitutes its method. From this point of view method becomes very definite and concrete, and its application to school-room practise very immediate and Specific. Part II builds on the foundations already laid and out lines the method of the elementary subjects. In each case it asks the question (1) what is the aim of this branch - what fruitful knowledge, what helpful attitudes, what applied skills should it give the child; (2) what particular subject matter must be used to accomplish these aims; (3) how shall I organise and teach this material to reach the desired aim. In answering these questions there has been an attempt to avoid mere dogmatism and to use the best current points of view in education. Book The Teaching of General Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of General Science Classic Reprint written by William Lewis Eikenberry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of General Science Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been some what spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature study in the elementary schools and that all are re quiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Since 1900 there has been a greater increase in the percentage of students enrolled in science in the high schools than in any other subject with the one exception of English. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation of science. X The chief needs in science instruction today are a more efficient organization of the course of study with a View to its socialization and practical application, and a clear-cut realization on the part of the teacher of the aims, the principles of organization, and the methods of instruction; it is to meet these needs that this series is being issued. The books attempt to present such generalizations of science as the average pupil should carry away from his school experience and to organize them for the preparation of the teacher and for presenta tion to the class. The volumes will therefore be of three kinds: (1) source books with accompanying field and laboratory guides for the use of students in normal schools and schools of education, and of teachers, (2) pupils' texts and notebooks, and (3) books on the teaching of the various science subjects. In the first the material will be organized with special reference to the training of the teacher and the most effective methods of presenting the subject to students. In the second the matter will be simplified, graded, and arranged in such a way that the books will serve as guides in science work for the pupils themselves. Moreover, they will furnish texts for the grades and high school that will simplify the teacher's task of presentation and will assure well-tried and well-organized experiences, on the part of the pupil, with natural objects. This series of texts for elementary and secondary schools will have dependent continuity and the subject-matter will gradually increase in difficulty to accord with the increasing capacity of the pupils. It will furnish a unified course in science. The third type of book is for the teacher and deals with the history, aims, principles of organization, and methods of instruction in the several sciences. Book Minnesota Course of Study

Download or read book Minnesota Course of Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota Course of Study: For Elementary Schools and Manual for Teachers For a long time, workers in the field of elementary education in Minnesota felt the need of a state course of study. About twelve years ago the superintendent of public instruction, Mr. J. W. Olsen, had prepared and published an elementary course of study. This proved most valuable, but, during 1913, a committee, authorized by the Minnesota Educational Association, prepared a report (Bulletin No. 51) which dealt largely with the elimination of subject-matter, and pointed out the need of a revised study course to serve alike city, village, and rural schools. This very general need of a revised and enlarged course of study for elementary schools was unanimously recognized by state and local school supervisors. In consideration of these facts, in the fall of 1915, Mr. C. G. Schulz, State Superintendent of Education, laid plans for the preparation of such a course. Although the mechanical work on the book occupied but a year, it was really "in the making" a much longer period, for it embodies not only the experience of the author, but that of the many teachers and students of education who generously helped to make the work what it is. To all of these the author acknowledges her debt and tenders her gratitude. With the increased responsibilities thrown upon the schools because of changing social conditions, teachers have, today, not only to be better prepared to begin their work, but they must, more than ever before, keep growing professionally. One means of such growth is a course of study, broad enough in outlook, to bear repeated readings with fresh interpretations at each forward step in the reader's professional progress. The hope that this course might prove such an one is in part realized, for, during the past few months, those who have most persistently studied the course speak of what they "continue to discover" in it. That the hope may be completely realized, and that the Minnesota Course of Study may be a definite factor in the growth of many teachers is the wish of its author. Book Method and Methods in the Teaching of English Classic Reprint

Download or read book Method and Methods in the Teaching of English Classic Reprint written by Israel Edwin Goldwasser and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method and Methods in the Teaching of English To affect the various motives that may prompt an author to add one more to the many books on methods of teaching that are now available, there seem to be two very good reasons why a new text on the teaching of English may be deemed unnecessary. In the first place, there are a number of excellent discussions of the general phases of the subject and of special branches, which are sound in principle and scholarly in analysis of the material. Secondly, in these days when so much is said in favor of allowing the initiative of the teacher to find full expression, any book which prescribes definite methods of teaching may be said to set itself against the trend of modern theory. Despite these considerations, however, I have long felt that there is a definite need for the kind of treatment of the subjects connected with the teaching of English in the elementary schools that I have given in this book. There is a real need of specific suggestions as to a rational mode of approaching and developing the work in English. Teachers are everywhere asking for directions which will give them not so much a model for direct imitation as a basis for intelligent self-criticism. This book aims to present a consistent method of work in all the branches of elementary English. While drawing freely from the various accepted texts, and adopting without hesitation many valuable suggestions from teachers and writers in all grades of the work, it claims consideration for this original feature: It aims to separate the teaching of technique from the teaching for appreciation and self-expression, and it seeks to found its methods upon a definite psychology of the learning process. No attempt has been made to exhaust every part of the subject or to be so definite as to make original thought on the part of the teacher unnecessary. Book The Teaching of Geography in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Geography in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by Richard Lawrence Archer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography in Elementary Schools This little book is an attempt to apply the newer conceptions of Geography to teaching in elementary schools. It in no way aims at being original in its treatment of the subject itself: for these we are indebted to the body of geographers who have during the last few years revolutionized the con ception of the subject, in particular to Mr. H. J. Mackinder and Dr. A. J. Herbertson, to Whose works frequent reference is made in the following pages. We felt, however, that in regard to the teaching of Geography in elementary schools, the central idea for which they are struggling - that Geography is, above all things, the examination of the effect of natural agencies on human affairs - is not yet sufficiently recognized and acted upon, and our alm IS to throw out some suggestions as to changes in the teaching which we believe would help the better realization of this idea. In the case of branches of the subject which have only recently come into prominence, we have given some outline of the subject-matter to serve as an introduction of them to readers to whom they may be unfamiliar, and have added information as to sources from which information may be obtained. In the Index the pages where subjects are treated most fully have been printed in black type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Reports on Educational Subjects, 1896-7 The following pages aim at showing in a statistical form the progress which was made towards a general provision of elementary education in England and Wales during the first quarter of a century from the passing of the Elementary Edu cation Act, 1870. The tables trace the growth of the Operations of the central and local authorities since that time; show to how great an extent public subsidies have been supplemented by voluntary contributions; and give an approximate estimate of the total amount spent on public elementary education (including the training of teachers) during the period under review. They contain an analysis of the conditions on which grants were paid to the schools under the various Codes of the Education Department in force during the years 1870 95. They indicate the increase in the number of teachers, the amount of their average salaries, and the contrast between the number of students who, at the beginning and end of the period, were in course of training for the profession of teaching in elementary schools. The mere study of the science of education does not of itself insure the mastery of methodology any more than theoretic knowledge in any other field car ries with it also skill in application. Even Ruskin, with all his keen insight, would scarcely be regarded as a competent teacher of painting. And why not? There is in the master's profession, observes J. G. Fitch, the same difference which is observable in all other human employments between the skilled and the unskilled practitioner, and this difference depends in a large measure on a knowledge of the best rules.
