While both groups agreed that communication is a practical discipline, journalism professors focused a great deal of their attention on the education of media professionals. Underpinning all of this was the unfolding of the AIDS crisis: a time when LGBT people realised that they were no longer simply fighting for their rights but, quite literally, fighting for their lives.
