Book I Steal Pencils

  • ISBN : 0595190324
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book I Steal Pencils written by Keith Franklin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-07 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I don’t know if Keith Franklin is a great poet or no. But I know that he is a born poet. Anyway, he wrote at least one poem that deserves to be included into any anthology of contemporary American poetry. In this poem Keith Franklin confesses that since childhood he liked to steal pencils. It means that subconsciously he was trying to create his own rainbow. What is this rainbow? It is a symbol of the diversity of life. It is a symbol of the human right to possess all the colors given to us by eternity. Inside our mothers, not yet born, all of us are lying down like new unsharpened pencils in their tender, warm, breathing pencil-boxes. Some of us unfortunately are doomed to use only our own self-eraser, fixed at one tip of the pencil’s body with a little metal ring. Only the strong artists are able to sharpen the opposite tip of pencils and create with a colorful graphite, liberated from the wooden pencil’s body, their own rainbow, not stolen from others. Keith Franklin belongs to this stubborn breed of artist. — Yevgeny Yevtushenko

Book Galaxy Collisions

  • Author : Curtis Struck
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-02-04
  • ISBN : 0387853715
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Galaxy Collisions written by Curtis Struck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectacular images of galaxy collisions capture the imagination. This book will show what is out there in the universe, what it’s like in other galaxies, what they might look like, and how cosmic processes might affect life in other solar systems. It will explain crucial stages in the development of physical structure in the universe, and the effect of galaxy scale processes. Professor Struck will explore all the issues surrounding galaxy collisions. He will begin with a brief broad review of the background on galaxies, the history of their discovery, and how this has been driven by steadily improving technology. Chapters 2 gives details of the early stages of different types of galaxy collision - Rings of Fire, Tidal Swings and Retrograde and Sideways Reels - while Chapter 3 describes collisions between galaxies of very different masses: minor merger or dwarf destruction. Chapter 4 covers ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and major mergers and Chapter 5 briefly examines the techniques used for computer simulation results and how increasing computer capacity has affected the development of this field. The following chapter looks at understanding the physical processes of triggered star formation and nuclear activity. Chapters 7-9 look at the broader view of cosmological structure growth which determines the environment and conditions in which galaxy collisions occur. In the densest environments, this process repeats itself on the larger scale of galaxy clusters. The concluding chapter considers what a galaxy collision looks like from a solar system like ours. Although the galaxy is completely restructured and the night sky view would change greatly over the course of several hundred million years, the direct effects on our planet would be few and infrequent, with only a small probability of being truly catastrophic. These issues will be explored along with the ideas that galaxies must reach a certain evolutionary "maturity" before they can even form solar systems, and that there are habitable zones within galaxies. Thus, galaxy scale processes, like collisions, can determine the fate of life on Earth-like planets.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller! From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Reckoners series, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive comes the second book in an epic series about a girl with a secret in a dangerous world at war for humanity's future. All her life, Spensa's dreamed of becoming a pilot and proving herself a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned there were crushing. The rumors of her father's cowardice are true--he deserted his Flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them. Spensa is sure that there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father that day could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars--and what they revealed to her was terrifying. Everything Spensa has been taught about her world is a lie. Humankind has always celebrated heros, but who defines what a hero is? Could humanity be the evil the galaxy needs to be protected from? Spensa is determined to find out, but each answer she discovers reveals a dozen new questions: about the war, about her enemies, and even, perhaps, about Spensa herself. But Spensa also discovered a few other things about herself--and she'll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to. "Sanderson delivers a cinematic adventure that explores the defining aspects of the individual versus the society. . . . Fans of Sanderson will not be disappointed." --SLJ "It is impossible to turn the pages fast enough." --Booklist "He's simply a brilliant writer. Period." --Patrick Rothfuss, author of the New York Times bestseller The Name of the Wind, on Brandon Sanderson.
