Speaking comes naturally-we just open our mouths and the words flow with ease. But not so with writing. It's common to get stuck on a writing project before putting even one word on paper. But take courage: this book shows you how to avoid writer's block. You'll learn to view writing the same as speaking to a friend-just sit at the keyboard, or have a pen in hand, and let fly. This method is called flow-writing, and it's been used by the world's top writers for decades. Flow-writing, in its speed and naturalness, mimics the spoken voice. By flow-writing you are actually capturing your speaking voice and redirecting it to paper. Your words will sound like you, and the quality of your writing will improve in leaps and bounds. Writing will be a joy!Notice some of the key chapter titles in this book: * Capture Your Style of Speech* Flow-Writing* Music-The Rhythm of Your Writing* Your Writing Voice* Humor* Writer's Block-Or Not Writer's Block* Personality* Sentence and Paragraph Structure* Write a Strong Conclusion* Tackling Large Writing Projects* Editing Your Work* Show, Don't Tell* Tricky Word Choices* "Rules" to Put to Rest* Self-Publishing

Book Politics and the English Language

Download or read book Politics and the English Language written by George Orwell and published by Renard Press Ltd. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Politics and the English Language, the second in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell takes aim at the language used in politics, which, he says, ‘is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind’. In an age where the language used in politics is constantly under the microscope, Orwell’s Politics and the English Language is just as relevant today, and gives the reader a vital understanding of the tactics at play. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Book Language and Revolution in Burke Wollstonecraft Paine and Godwin

Download or read book Language and Revolution in Burke Wollstonecraft Paine and Godwin written by Jane Hodson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolution in France of 1789 provoked a major 'pamphlet war' in Britain as writers debated what exactly had happened, why it had happened, and where events were now headed. Jane Hodson's book explores the relationship between political persuasion, literary style, and linguistic theory in this war of words, focusing on four key texts: Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France, Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Men, Thomas Paine's Rights of Man, and William Godwin's Enquiry Concerning Political Justice. While these texts form the core of Hodson's project, she ranges far beyond them to survey other works by the same authors; more than 50 contemporaneous books on language; and pamphlets, novels, and letters by other writers. The scope of her study permits her to challenge earlier accounts of the relationship between language and politics that lack historical nuance. Rather than seeing the Revolution debate as a straightforward conflict between radical and conservative linguistic practices, Hodson argues that there is no direct correlation between a particular style or linguistic concept and the political affiliation of the writer. Instead, she shows how each writer attempts to mobilize contemporary linguistic ideas to lend their texts greater authority. Her book will appeal to literature scholars and to historians of language and linguistics working in the Enlightenment and Romantic eras.

Book Economical Writing Third Edition

Download or read book Economical Writing Third Edition written by Deirdre Nansen McCloskey and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Write clearly about any subject: “Writers should check out Economical Writing, and editors should recommend it. Your future readers will be thankful.” —Journal of Scholarly Publishing Economics is not a field known for good writing. Charts, yes. Sparkling prose, no. Except, that is, when it comes to Deirdre Nansen McCloskey. Her conversational and witty yet always clear style is a hallmark of her classic works of economic history, enlivening the dismal science and engaging readers well beyond the discipline. And now she’s here to share the secrets of how it’s done, no matter what your field. Economical Writing is itself economical: a collection of thirty-five pithy rules for making your writing clear, concise, and effective. Proceeding from big-picture ideas to concrete strategies for improvement at the level of the paragraph, sentence, or word, McCloskey shows us that good writing, after all, is not just a matter of taste—it’s a product of adept intuition and a rigorous revision process. Debunking stale rules, warning us that “footnotes are nests for pedants,” and offering an arsenal of readily applicable tools and methods, she shows writers of all levels of experience how to rethink the way they approach their work, and gives them the knowledge to turn mediocre prose into magic. At once efficient and digestible, hilarious and provocative, Economical Writing lives up to its promise. With McCloskey as our guide, we discover how any piece of writing—on economics or any other subject—can be a pleasure to read.
