Book excerpt: USA TODAY AND WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER You’ve heard the advice: If you want to live longer, eat healthy foods and exercise daily. But there’s a third piece of the puzzle, and it can add 10 to 15 years to your life. It’s been right under your nose this whole time—literally. Your mouth is the gateway to your body and is the most critical organ for improving your health, from childhood onward. Everything in the human life cycle is related to the mouth: fertility, childbirth, sleeping soundly, success in school, finding a mate, getting a job, psychological well-being, avoiding chronic or systemic disease, and aging well. Your mouth is a window into the health of your body as a whole; from its microbiome to its structure, it impacts your physical and mental wellness in countless ways. Unfortunately, the mouth-body connection has been largely neglected by American medicine . . . until now. If Your Mouth Could Talk is the result of over 20 years of firsthand experience and research by renowned orthodontist and dentofacial orthopedist, Dr. Kami Hoss. In this groundbreaking work, Dr. Hoss connects the dots between oral health and whole-body health, offering a roadmap to a longer, more successful future for you and your family. This isn’t a book about brushing and flossing—or any of the other standard advice you get from your dentist. Instead, you’ll hear about how to protect your mouth’s microbiome, the effect of diet, the relationship between oral structure and sleep problems, how to breathe better, and more. This is an in-depth guide for people who want to take control of their health to the fullest extent possible—who want to understand how their mouth contributes to their overall health and quality of life, and what they can do to better care for it. If your mouth could talk, it would tell you about the condition of your entire life. Time to start listening.

Book Perfect Guide on Tooth Decay for Beginners and Dummies

Download or read book Perfect Guide on Tooth Decay for Beginners and Dummies written by Arnold Kuntz Ph D and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is the breakdown of teeth due to acids made by bacteria. The cavities may be a number of different colors from yellow to black. Symptoms may include pain and difficulty with eating. Complications may include inflammation of the tissue around the tooth, tooth loss, and infection or abscess formation. The cause of cavities is acid from bacteria dissolving the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel, dentin and cementum). The acid is produced by the bacteria when they break down food debris or sugar on the tooth surface. Simple sugars in food are these bacteria's primary energy source and thus a diet high in simple sugar is a risk factor. If mineral breakdown is greater than build up from sources such as saliva, caries results. Risk factors include conditions that result in less saliva such as: diabetes mellitus, Sjögren syndrome and some medications. Medications that decrease saliva production include antihistamines and antidepressants. Dental caries are also associated with poverty, poor cleaning of the mouth, and receding gums resulting in exposure of the roots of the teeth. Prevention of dental caries includes regular cleaning of the teeth, a diet low in sugar, and small amounts of fluoride. Brushing the teeth twice per day and flossing between the teeth once a day is recommended. Fluoride may be acquired from water, salt or toothpaste among other sources. Treating a mother's dental caries may decrease the risk in her children by decreasing the numbers of certain bacteria she may spread to them. Screening can result in earlier detection. Depending on the extent of destruction, various treatments can be used to restore the tooth to proper function or the tooth may be removed. There is no known method to grow back large amounts of tooth. The availability of treatment is often poor in the developing world. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen may be taken for pain. Worldwide, approximately 3.6 billion people (48% of the population) have dental caries in their permanent teeth as of 2016. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly all adults have dental caries at some point in time. In baby teeth it affects about 620 million people or 9% of the population. They have become more common in both children and adults in recent years. The disease is most common in the developed world due to greater simple sugar consumption and less common in the developing world. Caries is Latin for "rottenness".

Book Treatment Planning in Dentistry E Book

Download or read book Treatment Planning in Dentistry E Book written by Stephen J. Stefanac and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006-08-29 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides essential knowledge for creating treatment plans for adult dental patients. Treatment planning strategies are presented to help with balancing the ideal with the practical, with emphasis placed on the central role of the patient — whose needs should drive the treatment planning process. The focus is on planning of treatment, not on the comprehensive details of every treatment modality in dentistry. CD-ROM bound into book presents five cases of varying difficulty with interactive exercises that allow users to plan treatment. What's the Evidence? boxes link clinical decision-making and treatment planning strategies to current research. In Clinical Practice boxes highlight specific clinical situations faced by the general dentist. Review Questions and Suggested Projects, located at the end of each chapter, summarize and reinforce important concepts presented in the book. Key Terms and Glossary highlights the terms that are most important to the reader. Suggested Readings lists included at the end of most chapters provide supplemental resources. Chapter on Treatment Planning for Smokers and Patients with Oral Cancer addresses the dentist's role in managing patients with oral cancer, recognizing oral cancer and differential diagnosis of oral lesions, planning treatment for patients undergoing cancer therapy, and smoking cessation strategies. Chapter on Treatment Planning for the Special Care/Special Needs Patient examines the role of the general dentist in the management of patients with a variety of conditions including physical handicaps, mental handicaps, head trauma, hemophilia, and patients' needs before, during, or after major surgery. Chapter on Treatment Planning for the Alcohol and Substance Abuser discusses the challenges of treating this patient population, as well as how to recognize the problem, delivery of care, scope of treatment, and behavioral/compliance issues. Expanded content on Ethical and Legal Issues in Treatment Planning reflects new accreditation guidelines. Dental Team Focus boxes highlight the relevance of chapter content to the dental team. Ethics Topics boxes emphasize the ethical topics found within each chapter. International Tooth Numbering is listed alongside the U.S. tooth numbers in examples and illustrations.

Book Reverse Cavities

Download or read book Reverse Cavities written by Brandon Gilta and published by No Fluff Publishing . This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost everyone has had a tooth filled or extracted due to a cavity. Tooth decay is a common condition, not only among children but also among adults. This oral condition is so prevalent that it is considered as the nation’s top chronic disease. Further, tooth decay is even more prevalent than asthma. Cavity prevalence is surprising considering that tooth decay is preventable. If you look at the numbers, the pervasiveness of dental cavities becomes even more startling. In a study (2011-2012) done by the National Institute for Health, together with the Center for Disease and Prevention reports that 91% of adults with age ranging from 20 to 64 have dental cavities. Further, 5% of adults with the same age range have no remaining teeth. The study also predicts that when these adults reach 65 years of age, the rate would have increased to 96%. A 2016 National Center for Health Statistics survey shows that 18.6 percent of children aged 5 to 19 and 31.6 percent of adults aged 20 to 64 have untreated dental cavities. The high percentage of children and adults with cavities should be a cause for concern. Research has shown that there is a link between oral health and general health, like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, dementia, and respiratory illnesses. Several theories have been advanced by experts in dental health which link cavities to general health. One such link is the mouth-body connection which happens to be an old theory you can trace back to the time of Hippocrates. At this point, you may wonder how tooth decay which is a preventable disease could rise to such a high level of prevalence. You may also wonder about the conditions which give rise to cavity development. The crucial question, though, is how to reverse cavities the natural way to prevent the dental problem from developing into a serious oral health condition. Table of Contents Introduction Myths about Cavities What are Cavities Risk factors of a cavity Signs and symptoms of a cavity How do cavities develop? Causes of Tooth Decay How cavities form How poor dental health affect general health Common dental diseases How dental health affects health conditions How to Reverse cavities the natural way How to Reverse cavities the natural way Step-by-step guide to reverse cavities Oil pulling Homemade remineralizing toothpaste
