Book Hiding in the Shadows

Download or read book Hiding in the Shadows written by Friedrich Schneider and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A factory worker has a second job driving an unlicensed taxi at night; a plumber fixes a broken water pipe for a client, gets paid in cash but doesn't declare his earnings to the tax collector; a drug dealer brokers a sale with a prospective customer on a street corner. These are all examples of the underground or shadow economy - activities, both legal and illegal, that add up to trillions of dollars a year that take place "off the books," out of the gaze of taxmen and government statisticians. Although crime and shadow economic activities have long been a fact of life - and are now increasing around the world - almost all societies try to control their growth, because of the potentially serious consequences."--Preface.

Book Drivers of the Underground Economy Around the Millienium

Download or read book Drivers of the Underground Economy Around the Millienium written by Rajeev K. Goel and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a long term analysis of the determinants of the shadow economy. Using data for the United States over the years 1870-2014 we examine economic and political factors driving the underground sector. Results show that among the economic factors, greater economic prosperity increased the shadow sector, while greater openness to trade and a bigger government reduced it, with the effects of inflation being statistically insignificant. Politically, the efficacy of presidential vetoes and the effect of congressional party homogeneity are statistically insignificant. Further, the U.S. shadow economy increased during both world wars, but was lower during the great depression. However, in the short run, the relationship between the shadow economy and its determinants exhibit some remarkable differences.

Book The Underground Economies

Download or read book The Underground Economies written by Edgar L. Feige and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-01-27 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most disturbing aspects of the growth of underground economies are the interrelated problems of unreported and unrecorded income. A large and growing underground economy can thwart fiscal efforts to establish budget balance and may significantly undermine the veracity of a nation's economic information system. The notion that economic information is itself endogenous raises the possibility that at least part of the economic malaise observed in most Western nations during the past two decades is essentially the result of a statistical illusion. The essays in this 1989 volume examine the problems of defining, measuring and understanding the implications of the underground economies that have emerged in many of the world's developed nations. Empirical chapters examine the conceptual problems of how to measure a phenomenon that attempts to defy detection. Alternative measurement procedures are evaluated. Specific studies are included for the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Norway, Canada, France, the Soviet Union and Hungary.

Book Operation Quetzalcoatl

Download or read book Operation Quetzalcoatl written by Ralph O Nieders and published by . This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation Quetzalcoatl deals with real events and the emerging threat of a growing Underground Economy that very few have taken seriously. The fall of governments, investments banks and currencies have shown that those in charge of protecting the public welfare have failed. Business schools do not offer courses on the Underground Economy. They do not offer degrees in corruption, money laundering, counterfeiting or assassination, but they are all taught in the Underground Economy, and they all form part of the financial and political equation that impacts and defines the world. Narcodollars have now become a critical component of this thriving and growing economy. From Colombian revolutionaries to Islamic Jihadists, the drug trade is central to their movements and success. They use banks as effectively as they use bombs. They are amassing fortunes that can rival Wall Street hedge funds, fortunes that like nuclear materials can easily be converted into weapons of mass destruction. Governments around the world have failed to take the Underground Economy and Narcodollars seriously, this book shows why they should.
