Book The Game of Ring Hockey Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Game of Ring Hockey Classic Reprint written by J. Martin Voorhees and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game of Ring Hockey Voorhees of Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, in 1899. The possibility was first suggested by a rubber tire that had been separated from an iron dumb - hell which had been left in the gymnasium. The pratt'institute High School class of then freshmen, saw the ring and, having wands in their hands preparatory to falling in for drill, began to pass said ring about the floor; The game was played in a desultory manner until, 1902, when Dr. Voorhees figured out a ring with an inner bevel and a stick with a convex playing end, to correspond with the bevel in the ring, so as to limit the possibility of lifting the ring. Inter-class tournaments were arranged and played, creating very much interest and enthusiasm. One must be quick of eye to follow the ring, and quick and accurate of motion to place the end of the stick in the three inch opening of the ring as it is speeding across the floor. The possibility for the exercise of judgment and the chance for team work are unlimited. When the game can be played in a room, say forty by sixty feet, or of approximate proportions, and the side walls are used for boundaries a great deal is added to the game by the possibility of carom shots; goals being made by the ring having been shot against the wall at an angle that the rebound would carry it between the goal posts. Caroms may also be made from the side of the foot placed solidly on the floor in the line of direction of the ring. A room of this kind is also conducive'to a continuous game because there is no out of bounds. When playing in such a room the goal posts must be placed at least four feet from the end walls and the backward feet connected by a white line to be the goal line. Book Learning to Play Field Hockey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Learning to Play Field Hockey Classic Reprint written by Eustace E. White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Learning to Play Field Hockey Field Hockey is played in Great Britain by both men and women, but not in mixed teams, nor in mixed competition. In the United States its activities are confined principally to girls' colleges and schools. Nearly all of the American women's institutions of learning devote much time to the game. Interest in it is spreading to the high schools, when the latter have a sufficient playing area, either on the school ground or in parks. In Philadelphia, for instance, there is an organized league of clubs whose members learned field hockey at college and who keep up their interest in the game much as do the women of Great Britain in; county and similar teams. In the milder climate of the British Isles it is possi ble to play hockey from autumn until early summer. In the United States the playing period is confined principally to autumn, although it would be quite easy to hold a supplementary season in spring time. The Ladies' Field of London, a weekly periodical, den votes much space to Field Hockey in addition to the great variety of other subjects that specially interest women. It published recently a series of articles on learning to play field hockey, by Mr. Eustace E. White, sports editor. So thoroughly did these treat of the game that the publishers of Spalding's Athletic Library made arrangements with the author and Ladies' Field to reproduce them in book form for the benefit of field hockey players in the United States. Book Historical Dictionary of Ice Hockey

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Ice Hockey written by Laurel Zeisler and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest forms of ice hockey developed over the centuries in numerous cold weather countries. In the 17th century, a game similar to hockey was played in Holland known as kolven. But the modern sport of ice hockey arose from the efforts of college students and British soldiers in eastern Canada in the mid-19th century. Since then, ice hockey has moved from neighborhood lakes and ponds to international competitions, such as the Summit Series and the Winter Olympics. Historical Dictionary of Ice Hockey traces the history and evolution of hockey in general, as well as individual topics, from their beginnings to the present, through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary has more than 600 cross-referenced entries on the players, general managers, managers, coaches, and referees, as well as entries for teams, leagues, rules, and statistical categories. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about ice hockey.

Book Ice Hockey and Ice Polo Guide

Download or read book Ice Hockey and Ice Polo Guide written by J. A. Tuthill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ice Hockey and Ice Polo Guide Ice hockey is fast becoming a regulation American sport. Like many others it is an imported pastime and has found almost as much favor during the past winter as did golf after the first year of its introduction. Along with the revival of indoor athletics has come an increased interest in ice hockey, which, dating back but a couple of years, last winter amounted to that purely American outburst of effort known as a "boom." Three winters ago Chicago, Minneapolis and Detroit were about the only scenes of the game's activity, but last winter wherever ice could be found, out of doors or inside, East and West, ice hockey was being played. The game should not be confused with hockey nor ice polo. The former (from which ice hockey and ice polo have grown) is a very ancient field pastime, sometimes known as bandy, shinney or shintey. Originally, Romans played the game with a leather ball stuffed with feathers and a crooked club or bat called a bandy, because of being bent. A fourteenth century manuscript contains a drawing of two bandy players facing each other at a short distance and armed with bandy sticks, very similar to the hockey sticks of the present day used in the United Kingdom. The object was to strike the ball past each other, and if one failed to stop it, whatever ground was covered by the ball was claimed by the opponent, and so on with varying success until either boundary was reached, the latter being the goal. Book The Authentic Vol 33

Download or read book The Authentic Vol 33 written by Harry Beohner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authentic, Vol. 33: June, 1925 During the various seasons and in the different branches of athletics, in which the Stoneham High School has had representation, the results of the games have been extremely satisfying to the teams themselves, their coaches and to the student body as a whole, both as regards the number of victories, and in the way in which the games were play ed. The marked success that the greater number of the teams have met with, is really extraordinary for a school of our size and finances. The football, field hockey, ice hockey and base ball teams all had fine seasons and while the basketball team was very inexperienced the boys had their baptism and will do much better in the years to come. Book The Hockey Handbook

Download or read book The Hockey Handbook written by Lloyd Percival and published by McClelland & Stewart Limited. This book was released on 1997 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1951, and rejected at the time by one NHL coach as “the product of a three-year-old mind,” Lloyd Percival’sThe Hockey Handbookwent on to become an internationally recognized classic. Russian and European coaches seized on the book as the first authoritative, analytical treatment of hockey fundamentals and based their training regimes on the principles Percival described. The father of Russian hockey, Anatoli Tarasov, wrote to Percival: “Your wonderful book which introduced us to the mysteries of Canadian hockey, I have read like a schoolboy.” Now, nearly half a century later,The Hockey Handbookremains in a class by itself. It is the first book required by players or coaches at all levels of proficiency who are setting out to develop their own or their team’s hockey skills. Wayne Major, Larry Sadler, and Robert Thom are all experienced amateur hockey coaches who came to appreciate the practical value of Percival’s pioneering work. In revising the text, they drew upon the expertise of a variety of specialists, including, for example, Dr. Tom Sawa, who updated the chapter on training and conditioning, to giveThe Hockey Handbooka new relevance to modern hockey coaches. Now redesigned and issued in an easy-to-use format, the book will serve as an inspiration and guide to future generations of players and coaches.
