Book Organization Theory and the Future of Jewish Community Relations Councils

Download or read book Organization Theory and the Future of Jewish Community Relations Councils written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author argues that the changes occurring in American Jewry and in Israel are having a ripple effect on the organizational structure and governance of the American Jewish community. He contends that Jewish Community Relations Councils (JCRCs) are finding that their original substance-based goals have been accomplished to a great extent or no longer possess a sense of urgency. The author analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of JCRCs using four criteria derived from the case of the March of Dimes. This national organization, dedicated to the eradication of childhood polio, accomplished its sole goal and then sought to remain in existence by engaging in goal succession. He concludes that the future vitality of this government-like institution within the American Jewish community will depend in large part on making an explicit choice between the substance-based and process-based aspects of a JCRC.

Book Jewish Polity and American Civil Society

Download or read book Jewish Polity and American Civil Society written by Alan Mittleman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish Polity and American Civil Society is a study of the civic and political engagements of American Jews as mediated by their communal and denominational institutions. The book explores how the various branches of the organized Jewish community seek to influence public affairs. Over the course of the last century, Jewish agencies and religious movements have tried to shape public debate and public policy on such issues as civil rights, church-state relations, and American foreign policy. The book sets the history of Jewish engagement in these areas into historical context; analyzes the motives, strategies, and tactics of various Jewish groups, and evaluates their successes and failures. The book also explores the underlying idea--the public philosophy--that informs American Jews' understanding of civic and political engagement.
