Download or read book Canadian Military Intelligence written by David A. Charters and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive history of Canadian military intelligence and its influence on key military operations Canadian intelligence has become increasingly central to the operations of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Canadian Military Intelligence: Operations and Evolution from the October Crisis to the War in Afghanistan is the first comprehensive history that examines the impact of tactical, operational, and strategic intelligence on the Canadian military. Drawing upon a wide range of original documents and interviews with participants in specific operations, author David A. Charters provides an inside perspective on the development of military intelligence since the Second World War. He shows how intelligence influenced key military operations, from domestic internal security to peacekeeping efforts to high-intensity air campaigns—including the October Crisis of 1970, the Oka Crisis, the Gulf War, peacekeeping and enforcement operations in the Balkans, and the war in Afghanistan. He describes how decades of experience, innovation, and increasingly close cooperation with its Five Eyes and NATO allies allowed Canada’s military intelligence to punch above its weight. Its tactical effectiveness and ability to overcome challenges reshaped the outlook of military commanders, and intelligence emerged from the margins to become a central feature of military and defense operations. Canadian Military Intelligence offers lessons from the past and critical implications for future intelligence support with the creation of the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command. This book will be essential to both intelligence history and military history readers and collections.

Download or read book Strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces through Diversity and Inclusion written by Alistair Edgar and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian Armed Forces has not always embraced diversity and inclusion, but its future depends on it. As the country’s demographic makeup changes, its military must adapt to a new multicultural reality and diminishing pools of people from which it can recruit. Canada’s population is increasingly urbanized, immigrant, and not necessarily Christian, white, or bilingual. To attract and retain CAF personnel, the military will have to embrace and champion diversity while demonstrating that it is inclusive. Using a number of cases to highlight both challenges and opportunities, Strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces through Diversity and Inclusion provides a timely look at an established Canadian institution in a rapidly changing world. The editors explore how Canadian Muslim youth, LGBTQ+ individuals, women, racialized minorities, Indigenous communities, and people of non-Christian faiths see their experiences in the CAF. While diversity is a reality, inclusion is still a work in progress for the Canadian Armed Forces, as it is for society at large.

Download or read book The Role of Calcium Handling in Heart Failure and Heart Failure Associated Arrhythmias written by Elisabetta Cerbai and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under normal, healthy conditions, the contraction of cardiac myocytes, leading to the pump function of this organ, is driven by calcium-dependent mechanisms. Entry of calcium into the myocyte during the cardiac action potential causes activation of the ryanodine receptors and release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. This process termed calcium-induced calcium release is essential for excitation-contraction coupling and enables each action potential to be transduced into a mechanical event. Indeed, in healthy myocytes, the calcium concentration in the cytosol of is elevated approximately 10-fold from a resting level of ∼100 nM to ∼1 μM. This process is finely orchestrated by a number of key proteins, which can be specifically regulated by various pathways depending on the oxygen demand. Furthermore, the specific structure of the myocyte allows certain calcium-dependent processes to be compartmentalised, increasing the efficiency and safety of this regulation. Heart failure is a common, costly, and life-threatening condition. In 2015, for example, it affected around 40 million people globally. In patients with heart failure, the risk of sudden cardiac death and arrhythmias increases substantially. Cellular remodelling and alterations in calcium handling, which appear to contribute to the arrhythmogenic burden in heart failure, have been extensively reported. However, a number of unanswered questions remain, and each new study - while continuing to shed light on this subject - raises additional novel questions. This current compendium of articles covers a number of aspects and comprehensively reviews current knowledge and perspectives regarding the link between calcium handling, arrhythmias and heart failure providing at the same time insights that may lead to novel therapeutic options for the future.
