Book Beyond a Boundary

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cyril Lionel Robert James
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780822313830
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Beyond a Boundary written by Cyril Lionel Robert James and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In C. L. R. James's classic Beyond a Boundary, the sport is cricket and the scene is the colonial West Indies. Always eloquent and provocative, James--the "black Plato," (as coined by the London Times)--shows us how, in the rituals of performance and conflict on the field, we are watching not just prowess but politics and psychology at play. Part memoir of a boyhood in a black colony (by one of the founding fathers of African nationalism), part passionate celebration of an unusual and unexpected game, Beyond a Boundary raises, in a warm and witty voice, serious questions about race, class, politics, and the facts of colonial oppression. Originally published in England in 1963 and in the United States twenty years later (Pantheon, 1983), this second American edition brings back into print this prophetic statement on race and sport in society.

Book This is Cricket

Download or read book This is Cricket written by Daniel Melamud and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the WISDEN BOOK OF THE YEAR award and the TELEGRAPH SPORTS BOOK AWARDS ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE YEAR, this book is a celebration of the elegance and timeless beauty of cricket—its greatest and most stylish players, from past heroes to today’s stars, along with its idyllic and hallowed grounds. Cricket has been played for over three hundred years and in some ways remains largely unchanged. It is this timelessness, and the style and spirit in which the game is conducted, which is celebrated in This Is Cricket. The book brings together such idyllic settings as Sir Paul Getty's Ground in Buckinghamshire, U.K., surrounded by rolling countryside, with the Otago cricket ground in New Zealand set against a backdrop of mountains, as well as the sport's most hallowed pitches, including Lord's (opened by Thomas Lord in 1814) and Melbourne Cricket Ground, which hosted the first-ever International "Test" match in 1877. Readers will venture on a journey to the Caribbean, where the fast bowling attack of the West Indies reigned in the 1970s, and to India, where cricket soared to new heights in the 1980s. From Shane Warne's hat-trick at the MCG in 1994 to Ben Stokes's heroics at Lord's and Headingley in 2019, This Is Cricket captures many of the game's most extraordinary events and players. The striking images of on-field action as well as candid dressing-room moments, some published here for the first time, are taken by some of the most respected photographers in sport. Featuring bucolic village greens, charming pavilions, endearing team portraits, extraordinary catches, devastating bowling, heroic batting, stylish sweaters, and silly fancy dress, this book illustrates why cricket is the second most popular sport in the world and why it is truly loved by so many.

Book The Rules of Backyard Cricket

Download or read book The Rules of Backyard Cricket written by Jock Serong and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It starts in a suburban backyard with Darren Keefe and his older brother, sons of a fierce and gutsy single mother. The endless glow of summer, the bottomless fury of contest. All the love and hatred in two small bodies poured into the rules of a made-up game. Darren has two big talents: cricket and trouble. No surprise that he becomes an Australian sporting star of the bad-boy variety—one of those men who’s always got away with things and just keeps getting. Until the day we meet him, middle aged, in the boot of a car. Gagged, cable-tied, a bullet in his knee. Everything pointing towards a shallow grave. The Rules of Backyard Cricket is a novel of suspense in the tradition of Peter Temple’s Truth. With glorious writing harnessed to a gripping narrative, it observes celebrity, masculinity—humanity—with clear-eyed lyricism and exhilarating narrative drive. Jock Serong’s first novel, Quota, won the 2015 Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction. The Rules of Backyard Cricket was shortlisted for the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Award for Fiction, and was a finalist in the 2017 Mystery Writers of America Edgar Awards and the 2017 Indie Book Awards. On the Java Ridge won the Colin Roderick Award and the international Staunch Book Prize in 2018. Jock lives with his family on Victoria’s far west coast. ‘The Rules of Backyard Cricket by Jock Serong, while classified as ‘crime’, is a compelling literary novel dissecting toxic sporting culture and its fallout.’ Paddy O’Reilly, Australian Book Review, 2016 Books of the Year ‘The Rules of Backyard Cricket got the thumbs up from everyone.’ Favourite Fiction for 2016, Avenue Bookstore ‘My favourite reading experience of the year (and I don’t even like cricket).’ Heather Taylor Johnson, Sydney Morning Herald’s Year in Reading ‘Blow me down if I didn’t hang on every word.’ Clare Wright, Best Books of 2016, Australian ‘One of the great novels written about sport...Delicious. It’s the top read of the summer.’ Stuff NZ ‘A deeply interesting novel about sibling rivalry, family, masculinity, and the game of cricket...Serong is a talented storyteller, and he brings this unusual world to life.’ Booklist ‘Merges my childhood dreamscape of hot days and sporting ambition with a page-turning thriller set within the rot of professional sport. Beautifully Melbourne. Get on it!’ Tony Wilson ‘Readers who have fallen in love with Australian mysteries, thrillers and crime novels have a whole world to discover with fantastic authors bringing the southern hemisphere to life...As in the UK, cricket is a national passion in Australia and Jock Serong delves into the murky world of professional sportsmen.’ Jane Harper, Daily Mail

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cricket Guide: How to Bat, How to Bowl, How to Field, Diagrams How to Place a Field, Valuable Hints to Players, and Other Valuable Information; Rules of the Game From twenty minutes to a half hour's practice at the wicket, three or four times a week, on a well rolled and level piece of turf, from a medium pace-bowler, with instructions from a professional (or someone well posted on the game) as to when and how to make the different hits or plays, is the best advice to a beginner. It is of more value to obtain practice of this kind than any amount of book study. Yet it is necessary to examine into the art of the game to get at the foundation and to become acquainted with the different attitudes and names of the many hits or strokes. Book Cricket Guide

Download or read book Cricket Guide written by Geo; Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cricket Guide: How to Bat, How to Bowl, How to Field, Diagrams How to Place a Field, Valuable Hints to Players, and Other Valuable Information; Rules of the Game In writing this little Guide on Cricket I have endeavored to present to its readers in as plain a form as possible Hints on Batting, Bowling and Fielding, with illustrations of what I consider the most important in those departments of the game which go to assist a beginner. I have also presented other items and information that has been asked of me at times by cricketers and those unacquainted with the game. I have often wondered why the noble game of cricket is not more popular as a pastime throughout the United States. It is my opinion the only reason is that its qualities are not sufficiently well known to be appreciated by the American people, who, although fond of out-of-door athletics, condemn this as an "old man's" game and not worthy of notice compared with our national game, base ball. From my experience, cricket is the game wherein a bat and ball are used and well worth the mettle of any athlete, old or young. True, it is not altogether a spectators' game, but nevertheless it requires all the qualities of an athlete to play the game as it should be. Philadelphia is the home of cricket in this country. Here they have three of the finest inclosed grounds I ever saw (each containing from ten to twelve acres), owned respectively by the Germantown, Marion and Belmont clubs. These clubs extend every encouragement to their junior members, who range from ten to fifteen years in age, to learn the game, furnishing a competent professional as instructor. In this way is the foundation laid for future cricket in Philadelphia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
