Book excerpt: What miracles do we miss when we close our eyes to the wonder of everyday moments? In this busy, jaded world of ours, we often take for granted what we see every day. We may set aside time to spend with God in a quiet room, but we struggle to see his hand in a traffic jam or while walking the dog. But for Karen Wingate, sight itself is something extraordinary, and what our eyes can reveal is even more astounding. Karen lived most of her life with severely limited sight due to a cluster of disorders stemming from a genetic defect. But through the chance outcome of a surgery, she regained sight in one eye that doubled her visual acuity—and allowed her to see things she had never seen before. And as she discovered a more detailed world for the first time, she also began to see God in every new discovery—from the prosaic numbers of a bathroom scale to the glory of sunsets. With Fresh Eyes invites readers to not only celebrate the gift of their own sight but also reawaken the wonder of what they observe in creation—great and small—and how God is working in everyday moments. In each of her sixty meditations, Karen's humor and whimsy draw a connection between physical sight and spiritual understanding that will leave readers with a renewed joy and delight in what is good and beautiful, and will reassure them that God still works in the lives of his people.

Book The Relation of Wealth to Welfare

Download or read book The Relation of Wealth to Welfare written by William A. Robson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1924, The Relation of Wealth to Welfare examines certain definite and fundamental elements of human welfare and their relation to private income on the one hand and various kinds of collective action on the other. The four elements discussed in the book are health, art, work, and education. The author argues that the power of private income to increase the welfare of its possessor in regard to the various elements under examination is as a matter of fact frequently or even always comparatively small; whereas the power of collective action and public expenditure to do so is often comparatively great. This book is an essential read for students and researchers of political economy, political studies, and economics in general.

Book excerpt: "By analyzing what she describes as richly detailed archaeological site biographies, De Cunzo reconstructs how Delaware's farming people actively created their identities and shaped their interactions at home, at work, at church, and in the marketplace as they began to confront industrial capitalism. Book Mensch

Download or read book Mensch written by Marvin Zolot and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in primitive circumstances in a small village in Prussia in the early 20th Century, Manfred Swarsensky rose to become the youngest rabbi ever appointed to the Jewish Commmunity in Berlin in 1932. A gifted orator and riveting speaker, his fame spread throughout Europe as he spoke out frequently and fervently against the National Socialist Government of Adolf Hitler. He was warned to cease and desist his defamation of the Fascist Government of the Nazis, but he persisted. Predictably, he was thrown into a concentration camp where he was subjected to unspeakable horrors. He found his way to a small Midwestern college town, Madison, Wisconsin, where he became the founding rabbi of a Reform Congregation. He stated, "I was saved from the ovens to be a messenger from the dead to the living." Swarzensky became one of the most important moral and ethical forces in mid-America in the second half of the 20th Century. Rabbi Swarsensky was a bridge Builder and at the forefront of Judeo-Christian dialogue. He was called "An Apostle to the Gentiles," and, although thoroughly Jewish, "The finest Christian in Madison." He was involved in the civil rights struggle in the 1960's, a mitigating force in the threatened anarchy surrounding anti-Vietnam protests on college campuses that threatened to engulf the entire nation. According to Rabbi Swarsensky, "A Mensch is a complete person, both human and humane." Rabbi was a Mensch.
