Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Low-Pressure Transformers The hearty reception of the first edition of this small book has been very gratifying to the author who takes opportunity to answer, in the second edition, in the form of additional subject matter, a-number of questions pertaining to fundamental principles, addressed to him by those interested in transformer construction; hoping by this method to aid many who desire to depart somewhat from the printed specifications and construct with similar material, transformers for a variety of application. Pertaining to design it is probable there is no form of core that will effect so high operative efficiency as the form of discs recommended. Book Directions for Designing Making and Operating High Transformers Pressure Transformers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Directions for Designing Making and Operating High Transformers Pressure Transformers Classic Reprint written by F. E. Austin and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Designing, Making, and Operating High Transformers Pressure Transformers Electric power, at a high pressure, is at present a commercial demand and necessity; the considerations in favor of direct-current power at high pressure are, with the present forms of construction, fewer than those favoring alternating high pressure power. The one consideration above all others in favor of "alternating-current" power, is the simplicity, and economy with which the alternating-pressure, (constituting one factor of the power) may be increased or decreased in magnitude; or in common engineering parlance: - "stepped up" or "stepped down," from a low to a high or from a high to a low value respectively. The device employed to accomplish the stepping up or stepping down process is the so-called transformer, which is a really wonderful piece of apparatus, when considered as an energy device. It should be remembered that a transformer cannot be operated on direct-current circuits; but only by being connected with circuits in which the current is continuously undergoing regular changes in value; that is, by alternating-currents. The term "transformer" is perhaps a misnomer when used in connection with the now common device; since energy is not transformed by the device from one form into another form; but a certain percent of the electrical energy supplied to the device is given out by it with simply a change in the magnitude of the two factors of electrical power: - pressure and current. The device might more aptly be called a transmuter; from the Latin trans (meaning across) and mutare, (meaning to change across or to carry over). The electric power is simply carried across, through the medium of the so-called transformer, from one electric circuit to another. A transformer might then be defined as a device for the exchange of electric power from one alternating-current circuit to another, with a desired change in electric pressure. As will be evident later, a transformer consists essentially of two electric circuits interlinked by a magnetic circuit. A chain consisting of three links, the middle link representing the magnetic circuit, and the two outer links representing the two electrical circuits; one the primary and the other the secondary. Since a chain is no stronger than its weakest link, so the commercial value of a transformer is determined by its weakest part. The mechanical simplicity of a transformer is remarkable; containing no moving parts; and although at times receiving and delivering energy at the rate of thousands of horse-power, it requires very little care and maintenance. Book Transformer Practice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformer Practice: Manufacture, Assembling, Connections, Operation and Testing The development of the alternating-current transformer dates back about 25 years. At that time very little was known re garding design for operation at high voltages, and the engineer of the present day can scarcely realize the difficulties encountered in the construction of the early transformers. The high-voltage transformer made long-distance trans mission work possible, and the increased distances of transmission stimulated the design of large transformers. In the early days of transformer development as many as 15 to 20 transformer secondary windings have been connected in series to facilitate the operation of a long-distance transmission system, the maxi mum rating of each transformer being not greater than 10 kw. However, a method of constructing large transformers has long been devised by which an enormous amount of power may be transformed in a single unit. Such designs embody principles of insulation for high voltages and various methods for maintain ing a low operating temperature. Ten years ago a 500-kilowatt unit was considered to be a large size of transformer. The history of ten years' development has shown a most interesting process of evolution: it has marked more than a tenfold increase in size up to the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformers: Their Theory, Construction and Amplification, Simplified It has often been observed by almost every member of the electrical fraternity, that induction, and its out come, the transformer, is to the popular mind, the greatest mystery of the whole lighting system with which they come in contact. There is something tangible about the dynamo. Its movement, and the applied power are apparent. The lamp glows, and its action is appreciable, but the trans former remains to them an uncanny mystery. So too the average electrician whose training has long accustomed him to the management and applica tion of the electric current, finds in the transformer as a rule, more points regarding which his mind is hazy and uncertain, than in any other one piece of appara tus with which he has to deal. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Alternate-Current Transformers The invention of the alternate-current transformer some years ago led to the introduction of the system of high-tension distribution of electric energy for lighting purposes. The saving in the first cost of the copper mains being the chief advantage of the system in the eyes of the promoters, the question of the efficiency of this method of supply, except at full load, was not considered. Now, experience has shown that the cost of the annual supply depends largely on the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Determination of the Ratio of Transformation and of the Phase Relations in Transformers Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Determination of the Ratio of Transformation and of the Phase Relations in Transformers Usually the phase of the secondary is so nearly the reverse of the primary phase that the error with high power-factors would be insignificant, but with low power-factors a large error might be introduced, as may be seen by reference to the numerical examples given below. In view of these facts, it is thought desirable to publish the methods of measurement of these quantities in use at the Bureau of Standards. In the vector diagram, Fig. i, are shown the various quantities which go to determine the ratio of the transformer. The length of the vector is proportional to the maximum value of the quantity, and it is considered to be rotating uniformly in a counter clockwise direction. Its projection on a fixed diameter will then represent the instantaneous value of the quantity, assuming it to be sinusoidal. The angles between the vectors represent the phase-angles of the corresponding quantities. represents the magnetic flux linking both primary and secondary windings. It induces in the secondary winding an electromotive force E2 and in the primary winding an electromotive force in the same direction, but of different magnitude, fixed by the number of turns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Static Transformers It has been deemed desirable that the present work should deal with the fundamental principles of practical designing, but so soon as these principles have been assimilated, the reader should proceed to study carefully the many essential constructional details. A Bibliography of a considerable number of papers relating to static transformers is given at the end of Chapter I. In conclusion, I wish to acknowledge the work of my former assistant, Mr. Evelyn Good, who carried through many of the calculations, under my direction, and prepared a good many of the curves and diagrams. My assistant, Mr. C. Martin, compiled from my data certain portions of Chapters VIII. And IX. My thanks are due to the several manufacturing companies whose designs are described for their courtesy in providing me with the necessary information and for photographs and drawings. In the final formulas given below, however, the sign has been changed so that the phase angle is positive when the reversed secondary voltage leads the primary. When j; signs occur the upper sign should be used for lagging and the lower for leading secondary current.
