Book Behind Every Man

Download or read book Behind Every Man written by Joan Stauffer and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Nancy Cooper married Charlie Russell in 1895, she helped turn a journeyman cowboy and ranch hand who sketched and sculpted in his spare time into a full-time artist who sold and exhibited all over the globe. In Behind Every Man: The Story of Nancy Cooper Russell, Joan Stauffer offers the first biography of the person whom Charles Russell called “the best booster and pardner a man ever had.” Stauffer’s portrait, evoked in the voice of its subject and based on a decade of research, offers readers both a complete life story of Nancy Russell and creative insight into her thoughts and feelings. Stauffer reveals that Nancy and Charles’s union created a practical synergy. Always an advocate for her husband, a steward of his art, and a liaison to his admirers and critics, Nancy’s greatest contribution may have been the inspiration she provided Charles. “I done my best work for her,” the cowboy artist once remarked.

Book How to Cook Without a Book Completely Updated and Revised

Download or read book How to Cook Without a Book Completely Updated and Revised written by Pam Anderson and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Pam Anderson updates her classic cookbook—which put "cooking by heart" on the map—to include modern flavors and new techniques that today's home cooks will love, with new and original full-color photographs. It's been 17 years since the blockbuster How to Cook Without a Book was published, and Pam Anderson's method of mastering easy techniques to create simple, delicious meals is even more relevant today. From the working professional who loves cooking to the busy family member trying to get dinner on the table, today's modern home cook wants to master useful techniques and know how to stock pantries and refrigerators to pull together delicious meals on the fly. Understanding that most recipes are simply "variations on a theme," Pam innovatively teaches technique, ultimately eliminating the need for recipes. The new edition will reflect ingredients and techniques home cooks love to use today: chicken dishes are revamped by using thighs instead of boneless skinless breasts; hearty, dark greens like kale and swiss chard replace hearts of Romaine in salads; roasted Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes move from side dish to the main event in more meatless entrees; plus, tips for creating a whole meal using one pot or one sheet pan (instead of dirtying multiple dishes). Each chapter contains helpful at-a-glance charts that highlight the key points of every technique and a master recipe with enough variations to keep you going until you've learned how to cook without a book.

Book How the Other Half Lives

  • Author : Jacob Riis
  • Publisher : Standard Ebooks
  • Release : 2024-07-31T17:37:28Z
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book How the Other Half Lives written by Jacob Riis and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2024-07-31T17:37:28Z with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Danish-American journalist Jacob Riis visited the slums of New York City to highlight the squalor in which the “other half” lived. He used flash photography (a new innovation), tables of statistics, and personal stories to vividly depict the city’s various neighborhoods and ethnic groups. But the book isn’t merely a factual documentary—it’s also a moralistic appraisal of greedy landlords, the abundance of cheap beer dives and saloons, the low character of the tenants, and the very low wages on which the poor tried to subsist. He described some reforms already implemented, as well as those still needed. How the Other Half Lives was written at a time when many people were crowding into New York City. It was first published as an article in Scribner’s Magazine in 1889, along with many illustrations that were based directly on Riis’s photography. It was expanded into a full book in the next year, with the inclusion of more illustrations and some of Riis’s original photographs. The middle and upper classes were shocked by what the book described, about which they knew very little. Christian organizations in New York and beyond had similar reactions. The book was widely praised, and led to the enactment of many reforms in the following years aimed at improving the conditions of the tenements and the working poor. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
