Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Feeding of Dairy Cattle The art and science of feeding dairy cattle has ever been changing, and during the last two decades greater improve ments have been brought about in this branch of agriculture, by practical feeders and investigators, than ever before. The importance of the dairy cow as an economic factor is now recognized. Book Feeding Dairy Cattle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Feeding Dairy Cattle Classic Reprint written by E. S. Savage and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeding Dairy Cattle The Savage articles on Feeding Dairy Cattle have been published in the World from 1916 to the present time, and were reprinted in book form in 1917 and again in 1918. Breeders and dairymen appreciated that nothing of this sort had ever before been prepared for their benefit - a series of practical articles giving explicit directions on the important question of how to feed their dairy cows most efficiently and most economically. In addition, it was written not only from the standpoint of the ordinary dairyman, but from the point of view of the Holstein breeder as well - the breeder who is anxious to make the most of his opportunities. In short, the book of Savage articles comprised the most complete, understandable and up-to-the-minute text-book of Holstein feeding information ever put together. The first edition was quickly snapped up by the breeders, and likewise by agricultural colleges and schools, who bought these books in quantity for text-book use. In view of this enthusiastic reception, backing up our judgment in the matter, we are issuing a third edition, revised and brought down to date. The entire subject of feeding dairy cattle, as handled by Professor Savage, is based upon actual methods in use by successful dairymen. This book differs from the ordinary text-book in the important respect that every theory is made to deliver the goods in actual practice before it is accepted. Professor Savage is recognized as an authority on feeding matters. His ideas have proven successful not only in his own experience, but in the hands of dairymen and breeders who have put them into practice. He is in charge of the foundation courses in Feeds and Feeding at Cornell University, and has done considerable experimental and research work in feeding in that institution. Several cows with records of 30 to 35 pounds have been bred and developed in the university herd, and one of these cows, Glista Ernestine, has made seven different 30-pound records. The handling of these cows forms the basis of an interesting chapter in this book. The details of the care and feed of a number of the leading producers, in both short and longtime tests, as given by the men in actual charge, form the basis of other chapters, invaluable to the man who is interested in getting the greatest possible returns from his test work. Altogether we can commend this book to our Holstein friends in full confidence that its careful study will result in added knowledge of the subject of feeding that will be of practical service to them in their business as Holstein breeders and dairymen. Book Better Dairy Farming

Download or read book Better Dairy Farming written by E. S. Savage and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Dairy Farming: The Breeding, Feeding, Handling and Care of Dairy Cattle Professor E. H. Farrington of the department of dairy husbandry at the University of Wisconsin asks his class of farm boys at the end of each term this question, "What languages do you speak besides English?" One boy answered, "I can speak a little Norwegian and a little German, and I understand horses and cows." That is the very object in writing this book. We want to make the language of cows a little better understood by the dairymen of this country. To know about cows, the farms and the best farm practices in different parts of our great country will make a man a better farmer on his own farm. With the reading of this book we hope that farmers may have their vision broadened and perhaps a suggestion will be found that will change a practice so that a little more money may be made and saved. At the time of writing this preface farming is said to be in a bad way. The lawmakers and the others are all busy trying to help the farmer. Some good will come of their efforts. We think, however, that the most good will come through the efforts of the farmer himself. He will build for himself on his own farm and will build for himself and for his neighbors when he joins with them in the community and state enterprises which he will help to build, at the foundation first, in his own community. Co-operative effort will make for "better farming, better business and better living." The dairy farmer is the best off of all. Conditions in Wisconsin and New York and the other dairy states show that. This is no time for anything but optimism because the demand for milk and dairy products is growing and the market for these is the foundation of the business. With the market for milk and dairy products becoming increasingly good the market for surplus dairy cattle will become better. The object in writing this book is to help some with all this. We have enjoyed writing it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Care and Feeding of Dairy Cattle Vol 67 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Care and Feeding of Dairy Cattle Vol 67 Classic Reprint written by S. H. Hopkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Care and Feeding of Dairy Cattle, Vol. 67 The foregoing explains why the average yield of wheat per acre in Denmark is 42 bushels, England 32, and on this continent less than 20. An important item is the low cost of freight on concentrated products like butter and cheese having much value in small bulk. Labour is distributed evenly through out the year, winter as well as summer. Another advantage connected with dairy-farming is the steady market available and the certainty of returns. Market prices for dairy products vary but little from year to year. Dairy products are food necessities, while some farm products are more or less luxuries. Moreover, the market is close at hand. There is no market like the home market, and that is very far from being supplied by home production. Although returns at any one time are not large, they are coming in the whole year through. Thus intelligent dairy-farming is not at all speculative, but is essentially safe farming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Heavy Vs Light Grain Feeding for Dairy Cows Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heavy Vs Light Grain Feeding for Dairy Cows Classic Reprint written by Fritz Wilhelm Woll and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-08 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heavy Vs. Light Grain Feeding for Dairy Cows Table IX presents the results obtained With the individual cows included on the experiment on going from heavy to light grain feeding, and vice Versa. The results obtained in this experiment go in the same direction as those of the preceding ones, but the advantage from the heavy over the light grain feeding is more marked than in these, viz., an increase of 14% in the production of milk and 9% in the production of butterfat as a result of feeding a little over a ton more grain, With possible minor changes in the amounts of roughage eaten by the cows. The possible causes of this more pronounced reaction than that obtained in either of the previous experiments cannot be fully discussed here, but it may be suggested that it may be due to the relatively larger amount of grain fed on this experiment or a somewhat poorer quality of roughage fed to the cows, especially silage. It is plain that even in this case the cost of the extra grain fed is great er than What the increase in butterfat would bring even at retail prices, so that the result of this experiment alone furnishes no argument in favor of a heavy system of grain feeding. Book How to Choose a Good Cow Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Choose a Good Cow Classic Reprint written by George Severance and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Choose a Good Cow To study the homely, commonplace cow is strictly in accordance with the spirit of the times. The growing tendency in education is to give a larger and larger proportion of time to the study of things that pertain to everyday life. Every man, woman and child uses in one or more forms the products of the dairy cow. In Western Wash ington many families and many communities depend upon dairying for their principal income, many others keep a family cow, and many depend upon buying all milk, butter, etc consumed. In any case, all are interested in the most economical production of high class dairy products. Dairy cows vary greatly in the amount of milk and butter fat they will produce and in the economy of production. Many will yield a large profit but many Will not pay for their feed with the best of care and are correctly termed star boarders. The majority of dairy herds contain some star boarders eating up the profits produced by better members of the herd. Many dairymen realize they are not clearing much money but are unable to detect the boarders. There is no more important thing to be taught in a region as de pendent upon dairying for its development and prosperity as Western Washington than the best method for selecting a good cow, and there is no better channel for the dissemination of this knowledge than through the public schools. There are two methods in use for the selection of a dairy cow 1. The use of the Babcock test and the milk scale. 2. Selection of a cow from physical makeup. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cost of Raising a Dairy Cow The cost items other than for feed have been estimated at the Storrs station, whereas these same items are based upon accurate data for the Brigham farm. At the Storrs station the total cost is given at $66 for the heifer 2 years of age, while the Brigham records show the cost to be Had Mr. Brigham credited the calves with only $5 for manure, as was done at the Storrs station, the net cost of the heifer would have been increased to Thus the results of these investigations, carried on under different conditions and in different sections of the country, substantiate each other, and in each case they indicate that a heifer can not be' raised properly up to 2 years of age for less than $60.
