Book How to Ensure Good Thermal Performance of Cellulose Fibre Insulation

Download or read book How to Ensure Good Thermal Performance of Cellulose Fibre Insulation written by M. Bomberg and published by Division of Building Research, National Research Council of Canada [i.e. National Research Council Canada]. This book was released on 1980 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The customer for cellulose fibre insulation (CFI) has only two basic requirements: that the insulation provide the desired thermal resistance for the service life of the building; and that its use does not increase the hazard to health or contribute to the deterioration of other building components. An analysis of the requirements for CFI used as attic insulation is given in Table I. The thermal resistance provided by CFI is basically a function of its thickness and density. However, the thermal conductivity is almost independent of the density, in the density range at which the material is normally applied, i.e., 30 to 55 kg/m3 . There is a certain, relatively small range of variability, depending on paper grinding, the paper stock used, and the chemicals added, etc., but the thermal conductivity of all CFI material is practically the same. Research on CFI has led to the development of a number of test methods to determine the density and density changes during service life, and hence the resistance that will be provided by a given mass of material. In these tests, an accurate estimate of settlement is required because, in the field, CFI blown at a relatively low density will generally settle under the influence of such factors as temperature and humidity variations, and building vibrations. The test for density determination in Specification 51-GP-60M,8 of the Canadian Government Specifications Board (CGSB) is performed by blowing the material at machine settings selected to produce a minimum density. The "design density" is then calculated by Method A - from the blown density and the settlement determined by a drop test plus a temperature-humidity cycling test; or by Method B - from the blown density multiplied by a factor of 1.27, which is determined by averaging the settlement observed for tests on several materials. The manufacturer is required to label the bags or containers with the weight of the material and the area coverage for various resistances. The design density must therefore be predicted quite accurately if the "resistance coverage" values listed are to be realistic because the resistance provided depends mainly on the final thickness achieved. This implies two testing requirements: a test for quality assurance to ensure that the customer gets the resistance expected; and a quality control test that the manufacturer can use to ensure that he is producing a uniform material according to the specification. This Note will examine the precision of the various methods that determine design density in terms of their repeatability and reproducibility, and will discuss the effect of material variability.

Book Thermal Insulation and Radiation Control Technologies for Buildings

Download or read book Thermal Insulation and Radiation Control Technologies for Buildings written by Jan Kośny and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique treatment of building insulating products and the integration of these products with building components. This book was written for all those involved in building design, specification, construction, and commissioning, providing them with an understanding of and appreciation for the wide variety of thermal insulation products and technologies available for use in all types of buildings. The book proceeds from basic definitions and discussion of heat-transfer topics and thermal insulation concepts, to the design and use of these products. The impact of thermal insulation on dynamic building performance, including factors other than heating and cooling, is also discussed. The book does not require an advanced mathematical background. The authors provide sufficient information to provide a qualitative understanding, with more mathematical sections included for those interested in modeling and analysis. The basic physics associated with heat transfer in buildings are presented, along with the steady-state and transient analysis techniques needed for the effective implementation of thermal insulation and assemblies. Modern building design involves the integration of comfort, safety, economics, durability and cost considerations, all of which impact the selection and use of thermal insulation materials in buildings. In addition to theoretical explanations of the underlying science, the book details the properties and application of new thermal insulation materials, including vacuum panels, gas-filled panels, aerogels, phase-change materials, and radiation control technologies. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to researchers and building engineers wishing to understand the latest technologies and materials available, so as to achieve reduced energy consumption in commercial and residential buildings.
