Social workers can provide leadership and education surrounding issues of clinical interventions and policy practices related to the growing field of consumer genetics. This study explored what happens to family relationships, individual identity, and support when adult children unexpectedly discover previously unknown paternity through a direct-to-consumer DNA ancestry test. The findings indicated that relationships are altered, identity is changed, and support is sought to cope with the new information.
