Book Activating Bodhicitta The Awakening Mind and Meditation on Compassion

Download or read book Activating Bodhicitta The Awakening Mind and Meditation on Compassion written by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and published by Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ACTIVATING BODHICHITTA There is no more powerful mind than bodhicitta. There is no more joyous mind than bodhicitta. For the accomplishment of one's own ultimate purpose, the awakening mind is supreme, and to accomplish the purpose of all other living beings there is nothing superior to bodhicitta. The awakening mind is the unsurpassable way to collect merit. To purify obstacles bodhicitta is supreme. For protection from interferences bodhicitta is supreme. It is the unique, all-encompassing method. Every kind of ordinary and supra-mundane power can be accomplished through bodhicitta. Thus, it is absolutely precious. Even though we personally may find difficulty in immediate and thorough generation of such a mind, we should at least direct our thoughts towards it. To train our mind in such an ultimately altruistic manner from the very beginning of our practice of Dharma is vitally important. MEDITATION ON COMPASSION "The Inseparability of the Spiritual Master and Avalokiteshvara: A Source of all Powerful Attainments” All beings wish to be happy and free from misery. Although scientific development, modern weapons and abundant material progress may alleviate the temporary effects of dissatisfaction, such external means can never totally eradicate its fundamental cause. The true solution is to cultivate deep human compassion, love and respect for others. By cultivating such altruistic and beneficial attributes, the cause of suffering, self-cherishing, will gradually diminish. This, in turn, will promote unity and harmony among human beings of all nations. Although compassion is cultivated in one's own mind, the embodiment of it is the deity known as Avalokiteshvara (Tib. Chän-rä-zig). The various aspects that are visualized in meditation practices and represented in images and paintings are merely the interpretative forms of Avalokitebhvara, whereas the actual definitive form is compassion itself. “The Inseparability of the Spiritual Master and Avalokiteshvara: a Source of all Powerful Attainments” sādhana was composed by the XIV Dalai Lama when he was nineteen years of age and was first printed in Tibet in the Wood-Horse year (1954).

Book excerpt: What we need to know about meditation and mindfulness to eliminate "stress" in our lives is contained in this book. This book follows and discusses the Satipatthana meditation scheme (pronunciation: sati-PA'-tana), too often neglected in the West. Many additional details about Buddhism are discussed including the very nature of spirituality. This as a mysterious human capacity in the way that electricity or mechanics are for most people -- but more like a puzzle, once understood it becomes useful. Reading this is a way of doing Buddhism as long as the reader continues meditation. The virtue of participating in chanting and other rituals is also explained. This is intended as a thorough, well documented and simply written presentation. Teachings about Purification, Anapanasati, Heart, Precious Bodhicitta, Realization, Enlightenment and many other "technical" Buddhist concepts are described. There is an extensive glossary and bibliography.

Download or read book The Nectar of Bodhicitta written by Lama Zopa Rinpoche and published by Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LYWA director Nick Ribush writes: The story behind this book is that in the early Kopan Monastery courses, Lama Zopa Rinpoche would start his day’s teachings by quoting a verse from Shantideva’s or Khunu Lama Rinpoche’s seminal texts, giving a short teaching on it and then suggesting that students use it to generate a bodhicitta motivation for the day’s activities (mainly teachings, meditations and discussion groups but also ordinary activities such as eating, talking, walking around and so forth). Since those days I’ve always thought that a compilation of these short teachings would make a great book, and finally, here it is. Editor Gordon McDougall has assembled Rinpoche's teachings into two parts, sorted by author of the verses and arranged thematically. In Part One, Lama Zopa Rinpoche teaches on selected verses from Khunu Lama Rinpoche's Jewel Lamp, now published as Vast as the Heavens, Deep as the Sea. Lama Zopa Rinpoche advises, "Understanding and constantly reminding ourselves of the skies of benefits that bodhicitta brings is unbelievably worthwhile. This is the overall purpose of Khunu Lama Rinpoche’s book, to cause us to feel inspired and joyful that such a mind is possible." In Part Two, Rinpoche teaches on verses from the first chapter of Shantideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life. These verses describe the amazing benefits of developing the precious mind of bodhicitta, the supreme cause of happiness for all sentient beings.

This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resolve for Bodhi (bodhicitta), the aspiration to reach full Awakening for the sake of all living beings, is a core element of Mahayana Buddhism. This short text by Master Xing An (d. 1734) who lived in Hangzhou, provides instructions on the Resolve for Bodhi that fit well into the Chinese cultural context, while staying true to the spirit of Mahayana Buddhism. Mainly written for a monastic audience, the text provides an intriguing glimpse into the Buddhism of the Qing Dynasty, which is yet to receive much scholarly attention. At the same time, the text and its modern commentary by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua also speak to the people of the twenty-first century, asking what makes our lives worth living. (Based on audio recordings of lectures given by Master Hua at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Ukiah, California, in 1979, and at Gold Mountain Monastery in San Francisco in 1985)

Download or read book The Concept of Bodhicitta in ntideva s Bodhicary vat ra written by Francis Brassard and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an important concept within the Buddhist Mahāyāna tradition, bodhicitta. This term appears frequently in Sanskrit literature relating to the spiritual practices of the bodhisattva in Mahāyāna Buddhism and has been variously translated as "thought of enlightenment" or "desire of enlightenment." Francis Brassard offers a contextual analysis of bodhicitta based on the presuppositions underlying the spiritual practice of the bodhisattva. Since the understanding that emerges involves how one ought to view the process of spiritual transformation, this work contributes to Buddhist psychology and soteriology in particular, and to comparative religions in general. The book surveys the various interpretations of the concept of bodhicitta, analyzes its possible functions in the context of the spiritual path of the aspirant to enlightenment, and discusses an understanding of bodhicitta in the context of the Śāntideva's Bodhicaryāvatāra.

Book Dharma as Water A Commentary on the Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance Volume1

Download or read book Dharma as Water A Commentary on the Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance Volume1 written by Shih Cheng Yen and published by 靜思人文志業股份有限公司. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance is a well-known text in the Chinese Buddhist tradition. It was written by Tang Dynasty practitioner Master Wu-da after an encounter with the force of karmic retribution that manifested as a human-faced boil on his knee. Having personally experienced the inevitable results of karma, Master Wu-da wrote this text to caution future generations and make clear the necessity of repentance. Master Cheng Yen taught The Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance for five consecutive years in hopes that people would better understand the principles of repentance practice and apply Dharma-water to wash away the impurities in their hearts, thus approaching her goal of purifying people's hearts. With the wisdom gained from applying the Buddha-Dharma as the founder of Tzu Chi Foundation, Master Cheng Yen brings out the teachings of the Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance for modern readers. Her teaching of the Water Repentance not only promotes Great Vehicle repentance practices but also establishes a unique model for her disciples to follow. By integrating the Tzu Chi spirit into the teachings of the Water Repentance, she sheds a new and unique light upon the Buddha's teachings and makes them relevant for modern living. 'A Sutra is a path; this path is a road to walk on. ' In 2003, Dharma Master Cheng Yen became deeply concerned by the natural and man-made disasters occurring in the world, such as the Iraq war and ARS epidemic. Seeing the fear and panic spread by these events, as well as the suffering and destruction of human and animal life to which they led, she felt the need to introduce Tzu Chi volunteers to repentance practices. Master Cheng Yen hoped to inspire her disciples to enter deeply into the Buddha's teaching and gain a deep understanding of the workings of karma, especially the tremendous power of collective karma. Then they would be able to comprehend and take responsibility for the karma they were creating in the world. Therefore, she began giving a series of lectures on the Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance. Master Cheng Yen's explanation of the text brings these concepts into our modern lives. For Master Cheng Yen, Bodhisattvas are not statues in a temple but ordinary people with the motivation to help others. To purify their afflictions, Bodhisattvas must work together with other sentient beings, helping them unconditionally while eliminating the negative habitual tendencies which manifest. This is the practice of cultivating blessings and wisdom. Dharma as Water consists of three volumes, which is a compilation of five years of lectures. It follows the sequence of the Water Repentance as written, interjected with stories, ancient and modern-day, to illustrate those teachings. The division of Dharma as Water's three volumes is slightly different than the division of the original chant. The first volume of the book is an introduction followed by an explanation of how to cultivate the Seven States of Mind that are used in repentance practice. The second volume covers the Obstruction of Afflictions. The third volume covers the Obstruction of Karma and the Obstruction of Retributions. Each chapter of the main teaching begins with a selection of text from the Water Repentance over a gray background, and is followed by Master Cheng Yen's explanation.

Book Geumgang Samadhi Sutra theory

Download or read book Geumgang Samadhi Sutra theory written by Moon-Hyun Yoon and published by 연화사. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sutra, the Buddha explains the truth of the One Vehicle in response to questions from various Bodhisattvas and monks. It consists of 1 volume. Sanskrit name is VajrasamandDhi Suhtra, and the Tibetan name is Rdo rje.ḥand youṅ ṅIt isḥdsin gyi chos kyi is the best. The Vajrasamadhi-sutra is the reconstructed Sanskrit title of a Buddhist sutra ascribed to Shakyamuni Buddha but produced in Korea under the name Kumgang sammae kyong (Chinese: 金剛三昧經; pinyin: Jīngāng sānmèi jīng; Japanese: Kongō sanmaikyō), or the Adamantine Absorption Sutra. Although it was originally believed to have been a Chinese translation from a Sanskrit text, scholars have recently found that it was produced in Korea in about 685 CE and that it may be connected with the emergence of Seon in Korea._Wikipedia History According to Buswell, the Vajrasamadhi-sutra is thought to be an apocryphal scripture written by a Korean monk around 685 CE.[2][3][4] Hagiograpic accounts claim a supernatural origin for the text: when a Silla king sent an envoy to China in order to find medicine for his sick queen, the party was taken to bottom of the sea by a dragon king who entrusted the text to them, saying the text should be arranged by the unknown monk Taean and commented on by Wonhyo. In reality the text was likely connected with the emergence of Seon in Korea, and if this is the case it would be only the second known Korean text in this tradition. Wonhyo wrote a commentary on the text shortly after its production called the Kumgang sammaegyong non in which he speculates that it may have been the inspiration for the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana, which was in fact written over a hundred years earlier. The text includes quotations of Bodhidharma, who lived in the 6th century CE, and references to the East Mountain Teachings of Daoxin and Hongren, both of whom lived in the 7th century. The aim of the text appears to be the synthesis of newly introduced Chan Buddhism with already established Huayan Buddhism._Wikipedia
