Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: Its Selection and Purchase; Together With the Law of Warranty, Sale, C The object of this book is to show buyers of horses what to select and what to reject when purchasing without professional guidance. Veterinary Surgeons too often make a distinction - a convenient one - between the terms "practically" and "legally" sound. For instance, a horse may have some slight defect, not likely at the time nor indeed at any future date to interfere with its working capabilities, and the animal may in fact be likely to prove just as serviceable as one free from the defect Such a horse would be spoken of as being "practically" sound, but soundness at law means that the animal is entirely free from any defects which at the time or at any subsequent date could interfere with its usefulness. At law a horse is either sound or unsound, no matter how trifling the defect from which it may be suffering. Defective conformation does not constitute unsoundness; yet, as it may predispose an animal to injury, it may rank as being on the border line. The chapter on "Conformation" is intended to give the reader a general idea of the good and bad points of a horse. Although it must be a very difficult matter for an amateur to form a correct, or even a fairly correct, estimate as to the usefulness of a horse in the absence of considerable practical experience, it is hoped that the information given on this point may be found of real practical use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoroughbred Horse: His Origin, How to Breed and How Select Him; With the Horse Breeders' Guide Tun author in writing this book and compiling the tabulated pedigrees of the sires to be found in it, has been induced to do so in the hope of their proving useful to those engaged in breeding for the turf, or who are seeking to foster this most popular national amusement. Very many of our largest breeders ignore the lessons taught in the Stud Book and Racing Calendar. I earnestly commend to all the necessity of observing what sources and what course of breeding have produced the best results in England, which may be most properly called the home of the thoroughbred horse. I have given my own views as to the best mode to successfully breed the race-horse, the best mode to select a stallion and breed mare, and the treatment of the same both in the stud and on the farm. I do not expect that all will agree with me, but the ideas expressed and plans suggested will do away with many of the chances incident to breeding. There is much uncertainty, and always will be, attending the best and most careful mode.0f breeding, and this opinion is strongly exemplified in the frequent occurrence of one horse being of very high form and an excellent race-horse, and a full brother or sister being only ordi naryg yet I differ from a. Great many in the opinion that breeding depends entirely upon chance. Accidents and other unforeseen causes, some of them so unim portant and abstruse' as to escape our attention or come within our knowledge, may prevent the best bred and most promising animal from arriving at its natural size and true shape, and a little difference in conformation, symmetry and constitution may make a decided difference in goodness and speed. The foal may be weak and have a delicate constitution, owing to the dam being starved and exposed to hardships while carrying it, or it may have been im properly reared. This proves that great care and knowledge are necessary in rearing horses for the turf, as well as judgment and attention in selecting mares and stallions from which to breed. The chief points are pure blood, confor mation, constitution, racing lineage and hereditary soundness. The nearer we get to true shape with the other points combined, the more certainly we will arrive at excellence. \ve often find a large horse of good shape and racing synnnetrv: but where there is one good large one there are a dozen small or medium sized ones. The greater the size, when combined with the good qual ities. The greater the excellence and the powers, for a good little horse cannot cope with a great good one. Hence size. With constitution, soundness and svmmetrv constitute the height of perfection. While I advocate and commend pnre blood, I am convinced that very often pedigree is the only point at which Some breeders look, ignoring altogether shape and action; hence failures. The. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Race Horse: How to Buy, Train, and Run Him As to the knowledge requisite, the apprenticeship which qualifies an uneducated lad to undertake, at a later period, the charge of a racing stable, would, of course, qualify one superior to him in this respect for the same task. This is an ordeal to which few gentle men will submit. In place thereof they can learn the art of training from observation, from experience, and from oral or written instruction. The last I have in the ensuing pages endeavoured, and, I h0pe, with some suc cess, to impart, success which I believe will attend the efforts of those who deem this little work worthy of their perusal and attention, and who intelligently inter pret the precepts and practice therein enjoined. These have been derived from actual experience of training in New Zealand, the West Indies, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, and from observa tion of the methods employed by the best and the worst trainers, and the success or failure attending their efforts, as well as from the Opinion of those whose reputation is deservedly high, and therefore worthy of consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse-Breeding: Being the General Principles of Heredity Applied to the Business of Breeding Horses, With Instructions for the Management of Stallions, Brood Mares and Young Foals, and Selection of Breeding Stock While I have not intended that this book should in any sense be regarded as a veterinary work, yet I have thought I might add greatly to its practical usefulness by incorporating with it the material portions of several articles, prepared at my request by Prof. James Law, of Cornell University, N. Y., and previously published under my direction, wherein he treats of some of the diseases to which stallions, brood mares and young foals are especially subject. And I have also added a number of pages of matter of a similar nature, prepared especially for this work by N. H. Paaren, M. D., State Veterinarian of Illinois, whose high scientific attain ments and many years of extensive practice have espe cially fitted him to give valuable counsel upon such topics. In the belief that the book will be found interesting to all students of the science and art of breeding, and especially helpful to those who have the care and man agement of breeding studs, whether on a large or small scale, it is given to the public with a full consciousness of the fact that it does not contain a tithe of what might profitably be written or said upon the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive single volume dedicated to horses, The Original Horse Bible is a celebration of the long relationship that humans and horses enjoy, written by two highly regarded horsewomen, the late Moira C. Allen and Sharon Biggs. This 480-page volume, elaborately illustrated by world-renowned horse photographer Bob Langrish, is divided into eleven sections, covering topics that span the world of horses, from evolution and domestication to horse riding, training, competitions and more.Section 1: "History, Physiology, and Behavior" discusses the natural history of the horse, including adaption, migration, and domestication, how horses became integral to human kind, the role of horses in society (war horses, law-enforcement horses, race horses), as well as animal welfare and the plight of wild and feral horses. The anatomy and physiology of the horse are detailed in discussions of the horse's bodily systems, structure, senses, gait/movement, and coat and color patterns. In terms of behavior, the authors discuss the life cycle of the horse and reproduction, intelligence and trainability, and horse mentality and natural instincts. In Section 2: "Breeds and Types," the authors trace the evolution of modern horse types from three known ancient ancestors and archaic types and extinct breeds. They describe the modern types of horses based on their particular looks and specific uses (Baroque, Cob, Hack, Hunter, Polo Pony and so forth). A detailed discussion of horse color follows, explaining the differences between each and what specific characteristics define each (buckskin, palomino, and pinto). The extensive breed chapter offers portraits of approximately 175 breeds, alphabetically arranged, from the Abaco Barb to the Welsh Pony, including many rare and handsome breeds from around the world as well as favorites like the American Quarter Horse, the Shetland Pony and the Thoroughbred. Main entries provide alternative names, region of origins, brief history, and physical descriptions for each breed. Sidebars called "Breed in Brief" offer concise overviews of the lesser known breeds. The popular hobby of horse riding is the focus of Section 3: "Activities with Horses," which describes English, western, and driving competition as well as rodeo, competitive trail riding, vaulting, polo, and other horse sports. Section 7: "Rider Instruction" continues the discussion on riding with chapters on riding instructions, safety and fitness as well as English and western riding skills. In Section 4: "A New Horse" and Section 5 "Horsekeeping," the Bible becomes a primer for all horse owners offering detailed information about choosing the right horse for novice riders, families, and experienced riders and purchasing the horse and the proper equipment (saddles and bridles, boots, gear, and gadgets). The section concludes with chapters on transporting horses, stabling and boarding, and feeding and grooming. Section 6: "Health" discusses veterinary care and vaccines, recognizing the signs of a healthy animal, first aid for each area of the horse's anatomy, hoof care, and winter wear. A complete chapter is dedicated to battling parasites and pests and avoiding poisonous plants in the horse's environment. A chapter on alternative care completes the section.Section 8:"Horse Training" focuses on various training philosophies and early handling, training lessons, solving training problems (leading, bolting, biting/nipping, rearing/buckling and shying).Section 9: "Competition" is dedicated to horse shows and classes, preparation for various kinds of shows for both the horse and the rider, and what to expect at the show. These chapters are filled with priceless firsthand advice and pointers from the authors about how to succeed at each of these events.Section 10: "Breeding Mares and Raising Foals" offers a complete overview of the reproduction of horses, with details on choosing a stallion, live cover versus artificial insemination, pregnancy, delivery, and care, imprinting, and handling of the young. Section 11: "The Senior Horse" discusses the horse's golden years, signs of aging, nutrition and care, retirement from activities, and general care for aging animals. Horse owners will find symptoms and treatment for sixteen of the most common equine aliments (found in the appendix) to be of great utility, as are the resource section and complete index at the end of the volume.
