In 1733 Ben Franklin was asking that his city fight fires the way the bigger cities like Philadelphia do: "Soon after it [a fire] is seen and cry'd out, the Place is crowded by active Men of different Ages, Professions and Titles who, as of one Mind and Rank, apply themselves with all Vigilance and Resolution, according to their Abilities, to the hard Work of conquering the increasing fire." Under Franklin's goading, a group of thirty men came together to form the Union Fire Company on December 7, 1736.

Book How to Build a Home

Download or read book How to Build a Home written by Francis C. Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Build a Home: The House Practical; Being Suggestions as to Safety From Fire, Safety to Health, Comfort, Convenience, Durability, and Economy One builds a home, as a rule, but once in a lifetime. Unless an architect or builder by profession, he is liable to make serious mistakes, and to overlook many things which would conduce to the comfort and safety of himself and his family. Even if he be an architect or builder, he will do well not to rely entirely upon his own knowledge, but to consult others. While he will be likely to escape oversights in proportion as he has had experience, especially if he has been systematic in preserving notes from time to time of discoveries and details for which the memory cannot be relied upon, it is safe for him to assume that some of his acquaintances, especially if experts, may know some things which he does not.
