  • ISBN : 0062471198
  • Pages : 703 pages

Download or read book How We Win written by Farah Pandith and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Drawing on her decades of experience, Pandith unweaves the tangled web of extremism and demonstrates how government officials, tech CEOs, and concerned citizens alike can do their part to defeat it.” – Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright There is a war being fought, and we are losing it. Despite the billions of dollars spent since 9/11 trying to defeat terrorist organizations, the so-called Islamic State, Al Qaeda, and other groups remain a terrifying geopolitical threat. In some ways the threat has grown worse: The 9/11 hijackers came from far away; the danger today can come from anywhere—from the other side of the world to across the street. Unable to stem recruitment, we seem doomed to a worsening struggle with a constantly evolving enemy that remains several steps ahead of us. Unfortunately, current policies seem almost guaranteed not to reduce extremist violence but instead to make it easier for terrorists to spread their hateful ideas, recruit new members, and carry out attacks. We actually possess the means right now to inoculate communities against extremist ideologies. In How We Win, Farah Pandith presents a revolutionary new analysis of global extremism as well as powerful but seldom-used strategies for vanquishing it. Drawing on her visits to eighty countries, the hundreds of interviews and focus groups she’s conducted around the world, and her high-level experience in the Bush and Obama administrations, Pandith argues for a paradigm shift in our approach to combat extremism, one that mobilizes the expertise and resources of diplomats, corporate leaders, mental health experts, social scientists, entrepreneurs, local communities, and, most of all, global youth themselves. There is a war being fought, and we can win it. This is how.

Book A Delicate Relationship

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kenton Clymer
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2016-02-19
  • ISBN : 1501701010
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book A Delicate Relationship written by Kenton Clymer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, Barack Obama became the first U.S. president ever to visit Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. This official state visit marked a new period in the long and sinuous diplomatic relationship between the United States and Burma/Myanmar, which Kenton Clymer examines in A Delicate Relationship. From the challenges of decolonization and heightened nationalist activities that emerged in the wake of World War II to the Cold War concern with domino states to the rise of human rights policy in the 1980s and beyond, Clymer demonstrates how Burma/Myanmar has fit into the broad patterns of U.S. foreign policy and yet has never been fully integrated into diplomatic efforts in the region of Southeast Asia. When Burma, a British colony since the nineteenth century, achieved independence in 1948, the United States feared that the country might be the first Southeast Asian nation to fall to the communists, and it embarked on a series of efforts to prevent this. In 1962, General Ne Win, who toppled the government in a coup d’état, established an authoritarian socialist military junta that severely limited diplomatic contact and led to a period in which the primary American diplomatic concern became Burma’s increasing opium production. Ne Win’s rule ended (at least officially) in 1988, when the Burmese people revolted against the oppressive military government. Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as the charismatic leader of the opposition and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. Amid these great changes in policy and outlook, Burma/Myanmar remained fiercely nonaligned and, under Ne Win, isolationist. The limited diplomatic exchange that resulted meant that the state was often a frustrating puzzle to U.S. officials. Clymer explores attitudes toward Burma (later Myanmar), from anxious anticommunism during the Cold War to interventions to stop drug trafficking to debates in Congress, the White House, and the Department of State over how to respond to the emergence of the opposition movement in the late 1980s. The junta’s brutality, its refusal to relinquish power, and its imprisonment of opposition leaders resulted in public and Congressional pressure to try to change the regime. Indeed, Aung San Suu Kyi’s rise to prominence fueled the new foreign policy debate that was focused on human rights, and in that climate Burma/Myanmar held particularly large symbolic importance for U.S. policy makers. Congressional and public opinion favored sanctions, while U.S. presidents and their administrations were more cautious. Clymer’s account concludes with President Obama’s visits in 2012 and 2014, and visits to the United States by Aung San Suu Kyi and President Thein Sein, which marked the establishment of a new, warmer relationship with a relatively open Myanmar.

Book Kennedy on Negotiation

Download or read book Kennedy on Negotiation written by Gavin Kennedy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiation is a vital skill for every manager. As a result, there are almost as many 'patented' techniques for negotiation as there are managers, each proclaiming to be the definitive route to success. The authors behind these techniques keep their work very much to themselves. Their fundamentally different approaches to negotiation remain in isolation from each other, as if their authors were too polite to contradict others in the field. In most cases, when you are developing your negotiation skills, this leaves you with a stark choice: pick a single technique and ignore the rest. Until now ... Kennedy on Negotiation is an authoritative and comprehensive guide to negotiation skills training and practice. Dr Kennedy uses the well-established 'Four Phases' model as the structure around which he critiques constructively the numerous competing theories and models. Gavin Kennedy's book is everything you would expect from one of the most respected writers on negotiation. It is a readable and reliable guide to all that is best in the various contributions to negotiation training from authors such as John Nash, Walton and McKersie, Atkinson, Nierenberg, Rubin and Brown, Gottschalk, Karass, Fisher and Ury, and many more, including Gavin Kennedy himself.
