Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these times many people feel that their cherished religious values are held hostage by the forces of secularization and that, as a consequence, society is morally bankrupt. While acknowledging this problem, John Cobb overturns the prevailing expectations by drawing a distinction between secularization and secularism. Secularization, as Cobb uses the term, has a prophetic function. It is a process by which religion is cleansed and refocused on mission and ministry rather than on other-worldly myths and concerns. The uncritical understanding of religion that focuses on religion for its own sake is what Cobb calls secularism. In Cobb’s view, secularization has led to secularism or a culture of consumerism that threatens those very religious convictions many hold dear. After teasing the concepts of secularization and secularism apart, Cobb proposes an alternate path for secularization that will help us reevaluate our relation to our world and each other.

Book Avoiding Bitterness in Suffering

Download or read book Avoiding Bitterness in Suffering written by Ronda Chervin and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ronda Chervin's son, Charles, ended his own life, he did so believing that it is pointless to endure inevitable suffering. In the wake of Charles's death, Dr. Chervin set out to discover some of the most basic - but all too often misunderstood - answers to why God allows us to suffer, and how we can bear it with perseverance and hope. She shares her discoveries in these pages, helping you understand that while there is no escape from pain, pain itself is the road into the heart of Christ where peace can be found. You'll be given encouragement and practical advice as you explore afflictions such as failure, fear, frustration, loneliness, loss, marital problems, physical pain, fatigue, and temptation. Dr. Chervin explains each affliction in detail and offers reflections on the lives of saints who suffered from the very same cross. Throughout each chapter you're given practical suggestions on how you can meet Christ in your particular pain. You'll draw wisdom from the lives and writings of saints who were addicted, depressed, exhausted, raped, and unhappily married. And among these saints, you'll discover within their responses a pattern that you can ponder and imitate. Avoiding Bitterness in Suffering will bring courage and hope that in Christ and in communion with his saints, you can - and will - triumph over every kind of adversity. You'll also learn: How you can overcome the pain associated with loneliness and isolationFive ways to overcome doubts about the FaithFour steps to liberation from the suffering of indecisionFive ways to meet Christ in the suffering of exploitationWhat St. Benedict teaches us about failure - and how it changed the worldHow to cope with failure and povertyFive ways you can transform fear into trust in ChristHow you can turn frustrations and anger into a Christian spiritHow you can respond in a holy way to marital discord, demanding spouses, physical abuse, psychological abuse, abandonment, and rageFour ways you can turn to Christ in times of temptation

Book excerpt: Living Confidently in God's Unfailing Love Grace is amazing because it is God's provision for when we fall short of His standards. Unfortunately, too many of us embrace grace for our salvation but then leave it behind in our everyday lives. We base our relationship with God on our performance rather than on His love for us, even when we intuitively know that our performance cannot earn us the love we so desperately crave. Isn't it time to stop trying to measure up and begin accepting the transforming power of God's grace? The product of more than ten years of Bible study, Navigator author Jerry Bridges's Transforming Grace is a fountainhead of inspiration and renewal that will show you just how inexhaustible and generous God's grace really is. This edition includes the full study guide, which was formerly available as a separate product (ISBN 9781600063046).

Book Speed up Your Success in Times of Crisis

Download or read book Speed up Your Success in Times of Crisis written by Pastor Noah I. Mushet and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimacy with God remains the age long process for accessing and gaining Gods riches. In the bible, those who ended as generational rulers among men have been Kingdom slaves in intimate with God. Intimates of God always end as movers of men. You cannot truly be intimate with God and do not impact your generation! Keep in mind of the patriarch who reminded about God's covenant of grace with him through a dream. This expression of His love, fortunate care drew Jacob into a closer fellowship with the Heavenly Father. It was at a time when all of Jacob's plans had been frustrated and he had nothing but a stone for a pillow. Sometimes it does happen in this life when you feel like; you have no one and nothing else except God Himself! That time is called, time of crisis. There many touching stories which have been told of how the need of Gods intimacy could be used in the hour of crisis. For instance, William McKinley, assassinated American President, alleged to say on his deathbed, words of being nearer to God. And in 1912, as the Titanic was submerged into the arctic waters of the Atlantic sending at least 1,500 people into eternity, survivors said that the band played, the song of Nearer, My God, to Thee. How can a mere mortal benefit from friendship with God? What probable common ground could bring us mutually in intimacy then? Intimacy with God is something all should desire. The thought of human becoming friends with God boggle the mind. As small, weak creatures, what could we possibly have in common with the Almighty Creator of the universe? I recall Gods servant Pastor Verity M. Kotu of Reach Out For Christ Ministries who suggested that, you cant use God in emergency, for He (God) likes relationships. This is to say that, only when you have a problem, you begin to call on God. Dont be surprised if He doesnt come! Even yourself, you wouldnt like people to think of you only when they need your help! Its like they are just using you. God desires that we know Him intimately. Chapter five of the book of Genesis lists great men of the past who benefited from intimacy with God. You can observe that ten men are listed in that chapter, beginning with Adam, continuing through Seth, and ending with Noah. However, I would like to reveal two personalities whose case was different from the rests. These are Enoch and Noah. Lets begin with Enoch. The Bible says Enoch was a man who walked with God. In each case the Bible says that each man lived for so many years. You need to underpin the word lived. Every man was said to live from the time he became a father to the time he was buried, with the exception of Enoch and Noah. In Genesis 5:18-24 the Bible accounts one of those genealogies that are so tempting to leave out or read through in a hurry. In Genesis 5:22 the Bible accounts that after he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. In Genesis 5:24 the Bible also accounts that Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Two observations a. The others who were mentioned in that same chapter lived out their allotted time, but Enoch and Noah walked with God. b. Why concerning Enoch and Noah the word Worked was used? Walked with God is a frequent expression in Eastern part of the world, indicating steady, familiar and confidential communion. With no doubt, it describes intimacy and entails a condition of nearness to God. When the Bible says that Enoch and Noah walked with God, it means they both realised God's presence and enjoyed His communion in an astonishing measure. They grew deeper in intimacy with God, not occasionally, but in a walk that covered three hundred years, and that in a godless atmosphere. Abraham was called God's friend James 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God. Isaiah 41:8 But you, Isr

Book Not a Fan Updated and Expanded

Download or read book Not a Fan Updated and Expanded written by Kyle Idleman and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not a Fan has already called more than one million readers to consider the demands and rewards of being a true disciple--moving from fan to follower in their relationship with Jesus. After years of serving God, pastor and bestselling author Kyle Idleman had a startling revelation: for too long, he had been living as a fan of Jesus; someone who tried to make Christianity seem as appealing, comfortable, and convenient as he possibly could to others. Idleman decided something had to change--he needed to embark on the journey of becoming a completely committed follower of God, not just a fan. Fans want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires sacrifice, while followers are all in and completely committed to Christ. Not a Fan gives you the tools you need to determine exactly where you stand when it comes to your relationship with Jesus. No matter where you are in your walk with Christ, Not a Fan calls you to consider the demands and rewards of being a true disciple. With frankness and a touch of humor, Idleman invites you to: Examine your relationship with God Determine if you're following Jesus or just following the rules Pray the way Jesus prayed Start truly living for the one who gave his all for you This expanded and updated version of Not a Fan also includes a new introduction and an entirely new chapter about how to practically live out the book's core message. Join Idleman as he challenges you to take an honest look at your relationship with Jesus and discover what it really means to be a follower.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human spirit seems incapable of being stagnant, ever pushing the boundaries of knowledge and experience. We try to understand life through questions regarding our own existence, the nature of the universe, and the nature of God. The question of our collective heart is the external manifestation of an internal longing--a quest, if you will. This thirst to understand reality can be seen in superstructures that are scientific, social, political, and especially religious. When considering the doctrines, institutions, and rituals of religions, we observe certain core aspirations expressed by the people of these communities. These aspirations generate from an underlying quest which seeks a way out of our perceived predicament: a salvific quest. Regardless of whether we view ourselves as religious, pre-religious, post-religious, or non-religious, we find ourselves involved in such a quest; it seems to be an integral part of our human personhood. Using a unique framework of analysis, this book explores Christ's relevance to the quest expressed by the communities of eight major living religions--a relevance that neither degrades Christ nor demeans other "saviors." Christ is not part of the human quest, but is well equipped to satisfy that quest.

Book Neptune and the Final Phase of the Piscean Age

Download or read book Neptune and the Final Phase of the Piscean Age written by Sioux Rose and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume functions as two books in one. An "astrologer's reference" it delineates Neptune's conjunctions with planets from the birth chart. Additionally since the astrologer is trained to step outside the temporal context to understand the magnitude of stories inlaid into the rhythm structures of time its perspective is valuable as mankind faces a chaotic transition. The ancient Greeks personified the planetary personae through myth. Neptune, the deceiver, presides over the final phase of the Piscean Age as deception, delusion, and duplicity threaten the great verities. How did we get here? Mankind evidences remarkable technological expertise, but have matters improved for the vast majority? Illusions born of past traditions hold minds hostage, and pit tribe against tribe on the basis of divisive belief systems. Pisces is the zodiac position where the circle meets itself and differences dissolve. Symbolized by two fish, it suggests twin perceptual portals analogous to both brain hemispheres. Two complementary "oars" are required to navigate our shared vessel progressively; otherwise we circle endlessly and history repeats. Right brain sentience invokes what is missing: the sense of inherent unity among all living beings. Mankind can no longer afford the asymmetric worldview that undermines the great balance we must now endeavor to restore.
