Book How They Achieved

Download or read book How They Achieved written by Lucinda Watson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-03-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearls of Wisdom from How They Achieved "Pride comes from knowing what you want to do and trying your best. You may not always get there, but you will be proud of the experience of trying your best. And if you really, really try and enjoy the process, nine times out of ten you will get there."--John Chen, President and CEO, Sybase "Be the most passionate guy in the room. Not the smartest, not the cleverest, but the most passionate. Care more than anybody. You'll be the guy that wins."--Ted Bell, Vice Chairman and Worldwide Creative Director, Young & Rubicam "People who are lucky enough to be in a position to choose their career should ask themselves, 'What interests me? What makes me really excited?' Then they should get going and never take no for an answer."--Susie Tompkins Buell, founder and former owner, Esprit Clothing "People usually plan their vacations more carefully than they plan their careers. I'm a compulsive planner, but there were times when I had no idea what I was doing."--Bob Cohn, CEO, Octel and Lucent Technologies "A lot of it is timing, but a lot of it is a desire to work hard and to contribute, to not be somebody sitting on the sidelines and commenting, but to be someone playing a part in what's happening. It's also having the courage to toss your ideas out even though eight out of ten of them will be shot down."--Jane Cahill Pfieffer, President, NBC, and former vice president, IBM

Book The Wolf Tamers How They Made the Strong Weak

Download or read book The Wolf Tamers How They Made the Strong Weak written by David Sinclair and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the war of the wolves and the sheep, what if the sheep started winning? Are human wolves a keystone species of the human race? If they were hunted to extinction, leaving no one to winnow the mediocre mob, what would happen to humanity? The narrator in the movie Idiocracy was on point when he said, "Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species." The same is true of strength. Without the strong, the weak will reproduce more and more and eventually there will only be weakness, mediocrity, an inability – an impossibility – to achieve anything great and glorious. The strangest war is being fought. It's a war to destroy human intelligence and human strength. This war says that wolves must be exterminated or made into non-wolves, by taming them. And then they can become … pets. You know, just like dogs. You put a collar on them. You put a leash on them. You take them for walks. You tickle their tummy. You make them perform tricks. You make them roll over and play dead. They are wholly dependent on you. They have separation anxiety when you're not there. They have to make the intelligent stupid. They have to make the strong weak. But they don't know what they're doing. The task is not to tame wolves. It's to make them smarter and stronger. It's to sublimate them. Without the wolves, there is only decadence and degeneration. Without the wolves to control mediocrity, mediocrity grows exponentially. Why did the Roman Empire fall? It was because all the Roman wolves had gone. Only mediocrities were left. They could do nothing to hold back the barbarian tide. Civilizations always end when the wolves vanish. New cultures begin when new wolves start a new lupine era, full of strength and vigor. Are you a lone wolf? Are you one of the wolf pack? Or are you part of the gang trying to tame all wolves? Do you want to see the empire fall? When it no longer has any strength left, when mediocrities are in charge of everything, then the end is certain. As Wilfred Owen said, "What passing-bells for these who die as cattle? … Was it for this the clay grew tall?"

Book Indonesia s Small Entrepreneurs

Download or read book Indonesia s Small Entrepreneurs written by Sarah Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of Makassar, on the eastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the book explores the socioeconomic and cultural relationships that make life for small entrepreneurs in Makassar so distinctive. Using a new framework for the study of small enterprises - the 'small enterprise integrative framework' - this book gives us a greater understanding of the organization and operations of small enterprises in developing countries, at both the micro and macro levels. The application of this new framework for research reveals the diversity of labour flexibility, networking and cluster styles amongst the enterprises studies, and the constraints they face for growth. Whilst the recent Southeast Asian economic crisis has been heralded by certain commentators as a new era for small enterprises in the region, the book concludes that local realities for the small enterprises in Makassar mean that, whilst for some it has been a time of shifting fortunes, others have continued trading on the margins.
