Download or read book The Cottonwood Tree written by Kathleen Cain and published by Big Earth Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And so poet and naturalist Kathleen Cain fell in love with the cottonwood tree. Regarded by many as a nuisance, a "trash tree," the cottonwood not only has a fascinating history, it has served noble purposes as well. Ranging from Vermont to Arizona to Alaska, this native North American tree, in various sizes, shapes, and subspecies, has been a sacred symbol, a shelter providing relief from both heat and cold, a signpost for the lost and weary-and underneath its branches many dreams have been born. In a magical blend of art and science, the author looks not only at the cottonwood-how it grows, how it travels, and what it says-but at the roles it has played and continues to play in the art, health, and history of North America. If you need the science, you will find it here-if you need the human heart, you will find it here as well. "Champion" means winner, defender, something outstanding-a hero. After reading The Cottonwood Tree: An American Champion you will see why this remarkable tree stands so tall in the American landscape. Book jacket.

Download or read book The Spinosaurus Squad written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spinosaurus Squad The outline of this story: The Spinosaurus Squad was a group of amazing animals that stood guard in the beautiful and green forest. The Squad, led by their wise leader Spike, did everything they could to protect their country from any threats. After hearing from the Forest Elders that demonic goblins were coming to invade, the Squad went on a trip to protect their beloved home. Deep in the magic woods, the Squad found the goblins' secret hideout. They outsmarted the goblins by using Ruby's speed to move quietly, Rocky's strength to rush at the enemies, and Rosie's height to keep her friends from getting hurt. They fought bravely against the evil leader of the goblins, Griznak, and in the end, they beat the forces of evil. Once the goblins were killed, the magic forest came back to life. As the animals came out from hiding, fear turned into joy and thanksgiving. The Spinosaurus Squad worked hard to bring peace and unity back to their beloved land. The animals cheered and told the Squad how much they appreciated their bravery and hard work. The Squad's memory spread far and wide, making animals in other places want to protect their own homes. Their story became a tale that was told from tree to tree. It taught people to work together and that good always wins over evil. As time went on, the Squad kept doing its job as guards, making sure that the enchanted forest was always safe. They saw a new group of heroes come up, who were moved by how brave and determined they were. After they finished their job, the Squad accepted their place in history, knowing that the magical woods would always show the mark of their bravery. As the Squad said goodbye to their active jobs, their souls stayed tied to the magical forest they had been protecting. Their heritage was kept alive by the new guardians, who kept their work going. The magical forest grew and became a place of peace and beauty that will always be grateful to the Spinosaurus Squad for their unwavering commitment. The story of the Spinosaurus Squad is a tribute to the power of bravery, togetherness, and the desire to protect what is important. It tells us that heroes can come out of bad situations and make other people want to be like them. The Squad's adventures showed us that if we all work together, we can get through any problem and keep our countries looking beautiful. The beginning of the story: The Spinosaurus Squad used to live in a country with lush woods and sparkling rivers. They were a group of amazing animals. The land they lived on was full of tall trees and bright flowers, and it was a beautiful place to live. The smell of wildflowers filled the air, and the songs of birds could be heard all through the thick forest. The Spinosaurus Squad was not like any other group of dinosaurs. They have special skills that set them apart from everyone else. Each member of the Squad had different skills and worked well together to make a strong team. Their strength and intelligence were only matched by their loyalty to their land and the people who lived there. Spike, the smart and brave leader of the Squad, was the heart of the Squad. Spike was a beautiful Spinosaurus with a strong personality and a sharp mind. His deep, golden eyes showed years of experience, and his tall height made people feel both awe and respect. Spike was very close to the land and knew its rhythms and details better than anyone else. Under Spike's direction, the Spinosaurus Squad had promised to protect their area from any threats that came their way. They were in charge of keeping the delicate balance between the animals and their surroundings in the forest. Whether it was a natural disaster or an attack by bad forces, the Squad was ready to deal with anything that could disrupt the peace at home. The Squad's scout was Ruby, a smart and quick raptor. She kept her sharp eyes and quick reflexes on the land, always looking for signs of trouble. The Squad needed her because she could move quickly and quietly through the thick bush. Rocky, a strong and scary triceratops, kept watch over the Squad. He charged into fighting without fear, using his strong horns and tough armor to protect his allies. His loud roar sent shivers down the backs of any enemies who tried to get in their way. Rosie, a beautiful brachiosaurus, made the place peaceful by being kind. Her huge size let her climb to the tops of the tallest trees and share the leaves with other animals who were hungry. The animals in the forest felt calm and at peace when Rosie was around, and her calming voice helped those who were hurting. The Spinosaurus Squad went on many adventures together because they wanted to protect their country and the people who lived there. They had to get through dangerous landscapes, fight scary animals, and outsmart smart enemies. Even so, their relationship grew stronger, and they could always trust each other. The Spinosaurus Squad's bravery and willingness to help others made other animals want to fight for their homes and protect the wild world. They became legendary figures that parents told their young as bedtime stories. The Spinosaurus Squad stood guard over the land, making sure that its beauty and peace would last for years to come in the country of green woods and sparkling rivers. And as long as there were threats to their home, Spike, the Squad's smart and unbeatable leader, would keep them strong and ready to face any problem. A light breeze quickly carried a telegram to the Squad as they were meeting at their secret base on a beautiful morning. The seal of the Forest Elders, who lived deep in the magical woods and were very wise, was on the message. As Spike, the head of the Spinosaurus Squad, broke the seal and spread out the paper, the tension in the room grew. His eyes looked over the message, and as he read each word, his face became more serious. The bad news that the messenger brought made them shiver was that evil goblins had moved into their beloved land. The once peaceful bush was now being tormented by their bad behavior. These bad monsters were making trouble, causing confusion, scaring the animals, and upsetting the peace and quiet that had been in the woods. The silence in the Squad was broken by Spike's dominant voice. "My fellow protectors of the land, we're facing a big problem. The Forest Elders are counting on us to help, and we won't let them or our home down." The Spinosaurus Squad didn't spend any time. They quickly came up with a plan to get rid of the goblins and bring peace back to their land. Ruby would sneak up on the goblins and use her sharp senses to find out where they were. Rocky's intimidating strength would protect his friends from harm during the fight. Rosie's caring attitude would calm and encourage the scared animals, making them feel better and giving them hope. The Squad went deep into the enchanted woods, bringing with them their special skills and a strong will. The once busy and friendly forest now gave off a feeling of fear, as if the trees themselves were whispering warnings of approaching disaster. Ruby's sharp eyes caught glimpses of the goblins' tracks and the messes they left behind as they moved. The damage done by the goblins really upset the Squad, which made them even more determined to put an end to the chaos. They finally got to the goblins' home, which was a dark, scary cave hidden by twisted roots and moss-covered rocks. The door had a strange feeling, like it was hiding secrets as dark as the night. Even so, the Spinosaurus Squad was not afraid and ready to face whatever evil was inside. Spike led them cautiously into the cave, where their eyes had to get used to the dark light. As they went deeper into the maze of hallways, the smell of goblin trouble got stronger. The goblins' evil laughter filled the cave. It was a terrible sound that made even the bravest people cringe. The Spinosaurus Squad and the goblin attackers got into a fierce fight. Ruby moved quickly and hit her with her claws, which were very sharp. Rocky charged with unbeatable strength, his horns and protective hide making it impossible to hurt him. Rosie's relaxing presence made the scared animals feel better, so they could run away to safety. The Squad's biggest strength turned out to be their unwavering determination and unity. The goblins were overpowered by their coordinated attacks and unwavering resolve. They were up against a force they hadn't expected. As the goblins ran away, they became less dangerous, and the Spinosaurus Squad gained the upper hand. As soon as the last goblin ran back into the bush, peace came back to the land. The animals came out from where they had been hiding, with thanks in their eyes. They danced and sang, happy that peace and unity had been restored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Enchanting . . . An absorbing narrative of politics, ecology, and economics."--New York Times Book Review (Editor's Choice) "A must-read for coffee enthusiasts."--Smithsonian (Best of the Year) "Reads like an engaging multimystery detective novel."--Wall Street Journal "Fascinating . . . How a local crop transformed into a global commodity."--Real Simple (Best of the Month) Coffee is one of the largest and most valuable commodities in the world. This is the story of its origins, its history, and the threat to its future, by the IACP Award–winning author of Darjeeling. Located between the Great Rift Valley and the Nile, the cloud forests in southwestern Ethiopia are the original home of Arabica, the most prevalent and superior of the two main species of coffee being cultivated today. Virtually unknown to European explorers, the Kafa region was essentially off-limits to foreigners well into the twentieth century, which allowed the world’s original coffee culture to develop in virtual isolation in the forests where the Kafa people continue to forage for wild coffee berries. Deftly blending in the long, fascinating history of our favorite drink, award-winning author Jeff Koehler takes readers from these forest beginnings along the spectacular journey of its spread around the globe. With cafés on virtually every corner of every town in the world, coffee has never been so popular--nor tasted so good. Yet diseases and climate change are battering production in Latin America, where 85 percent of Arabica grows. As the industry tries to safeguard the species’ future, breeders are returning to the original coffee forests, which are under threat and swiftly shrinking. "The forests around Kafa are not important just because they are the origin of a drink that means so much to so many," writes Koehler. "They are important because deep in their shady understory lies a key to saving the faltering coffee industry. They hold not just the past but also the future of coffee."

Download or read book The War of the Gods RLE Myth written by Jarich Oosten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This structural analysis of myth, first published in 1985, focuses on social and political problems of Indo-European mythology. Dr Jarich Oosten tells how the ancient Indo-European gods competed for supreme power and the exclusive possession of the sacred potion of wisdom and immortality. In examining the social code of the wars of the gods, he reveals that there are remarkably consistent patterns in time and space: paternal relatives, equals at first, prove unable to share power, magic goods, etc; while some gods retain their divine status as an exclusive prerogative, their brothers or paternal cousins are transformed into demons; relatives by marriage, however, who are unequal at first, succeed in sharing power and magic goods, and thus become equal partners in the pantheon. Dr Oosten describes how the ancient mythological cycles were broken down and transformed into heroic sagas and epics, and shows how many traditionally related themes – the severed head, the magic cauldron – were preserved. Gradually the political problems of kingship came to overshadow the social problems of kinship, as in the development of the myths of King Arthur. Dr Oosten argues that the social code remains basically the same, and his analysis of this code gives a fascinating perspective on the development of Indo-European mythology from the oldest written sources to the comparatively recent faitytales.
