SMEs are more vulnerable, because they suffer from a number of structural disadvantages when collaborating with larger companies, and yet, they need to collaborate with external partners to overcome their lack of resources. Therefore, this study investigates how SMEs can most effectively protect critical knowledge in collaborations with external partners, for that they can prevent knowledge loss, leakage and theft, while maximizing the performance of the collaboration. Based on a comprehensive review of existing literature, and a qualitative multiple-case study evaluation, where highly innovative and successful SMEs in Germany contributed their experiences, I have derived valuable insights for practice and theory. Overall, the most commonly used means of protecting critical knowledge were secrecy, patents, the systematic selection of partners, and contracts. Despite the importance given to these mechanisms, not all of them proved to be effective. In fact, trust, secrecy and the systematic selection of partners were considered to be most effective, while initial secrecy and patents were concluded to overprotect knowledge, thus, limiting the possible overall innovative performance. Complementary assets, rotating personnel, oligopolistic market structures, equity relationships, technical means of protection, and employee contracts were found to be entirely ineffective for SMEs. Book excerpt: Similar to large multinational companies (MNCs), small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have begun to extend their global commitment from exports only to full-scale subsidiaries with marketing, production and even research and development (R & D) activities at locations in distant markets. Moreover, SMEs increasingly shift R & D tasks to external partners that provide complementary know-how or to reduce risks. This dispersion of knowledge-intensive activities to distant sites or to external partners challenges the way SMEs undertake innovation. Although there is extant research on how large MNCs can manage this dispersion of R & D activities, only little is known on how SMEs can implement effective management approaches. This thesis addresses this lack in research and investigates management mechanisms and their applicability to the specific challenges of SMEs to manage dispersed innovation. Whereas the major part of this thesis investigates the global dimension of managing dispersed innovation, the final part addresses the external dimension. This thesis is structured in five separate articles. The first article provides an introduction to this topic and frames the overall research agenda and results of this thesis. The following four articles are individual contributions to sub-topics of this research agenda. The first three articles investigate the specific case of the management of global R & D in SMEs. The first article applies a multiple case study approach and explores the management mechanisms that are applied by SMEs to manage global R & D activities. Based on cases from various industries, three archetypes are derived. The second article builds on these insights and derives a research framework on how the management of global R & D contributes to the performance of the company. Based on a study of 103 companies, various management mechanisms to manage global R & D activities in SMEs are tested. The third article applies again.
