Book excerpt: Recognizing that school counselors will likely encounter the tragedy of youth suicide, many counselor educator programs focus on identification of suicidal ideation and prevention, but the field of school counseling remains largely under-equipped regarding how to cope with the aftermath of student suicide. In an effort to expand the qualitative research within the profession on how best to educate, support, and implement suicide postvention strategies, there remained a need to explore the experience of the school counselor in the aftermath of such tragedy. This study addressed how school counselors who were trained in CACREP-accredited programs experience the response to student suicide. Eight practicing school counselors who experienced the loss of a student to suicide were interviewed using a revised version of Seidman’s three-part model. Each participant took part in two individual 45-90 minutes long interviews at least a week apart. The qualitative study was guided by three questions: What is the school counselor’s experience of student suicide? What ways did the school counselor cope with the experience of student suicide? And lastly, what effect did suicide have the life of the school counselor, both professionally and personally? Data analysis was conducted utilizing Giorgi’s (2009) Descriptive Phenomenological Method. Six essential themes were described by participants forming the structural description of their experience of student suicide: (1) Historical Context: Early Experiences with Trauma and/or Loss, (2) Personal History with Counseling, (3) Training in Graduate Program, (4) Response of School/District, (5) Coping Reactions and Related Predictors, and (6) Shift in Perspective on Trauma and/or Loss. A potentially predictive model detailing factors that contributed to higher levels of adaptive coping in school counselors post tragedy is presented and discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, hermeneutic, phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of school counselors who have been impacted by the death of a student by suicide in the United States. The central question of the study was: How do school counselors describe their experiences following the death of a student by suicide? The three subquestions were: (a) How do school counselors describe their reactions when a student dies by suicide? (b) How do school counselors perceive their professional involvements in postvention activities following a student suicide? (c) How do school counselors cope after the death of a student by suicide? The theory guiding the study was the crisis in context theory, as this theory explained the grief experiences of an unexpected event within the context of the school environment (Myer & Moore, 2006). Data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews, response to online journal prompts, and focus group discussions of 11 school counselors. Data analysis strategies consisted of content analysis procedures, such as coding the data individually, then synthesizing the data through triangulation, and engaging in self-reflection by journaling throughout the process. The data analysis revealed five common themes of the school counselors’ lived experiences of the phenomenon. The findings indicated that school counselors exhibited high impact from the student suicide regardless of having a relationship with the student, experienced prolonged grief, and demonstrated problem-focused coping. Recommendations are provided for professional training programs, school counselors, administrators, and clinical mental health professionals, as well as, topics for future research. The research analyzed the current knowledge of Wisconsin school counselors on suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention and found that: 1. Have counselors received any education or training on suicide prevention and/or intervention? 2. Do schools have a crisis intervention team? 3. Do schools address suicide prevention in their curriculum? 4. Do counselors feel they need additional education on suicide prevention, intervention, or postvention? Overall, this research found that Wisconsin school counselors are proficient and prepared to implement prevention, intervention, and postvention procedures following a student suicide.
