With the thirty-year-long Covenant War finally over, the Office of Naval Intelligence faces old grievances rising again to threaten Earth. Angry and bitter colonists—still wanting to settle scores from an insurrection put on hold for three decades—crave justice…as does a man whose life was torn apart by ONI when his young daughter was abducted for the SPARTAN-II program. How far will Kilo-Five go to stop him? And will he be able to live with the truth when he finds it? The painful answer lies with someone long dead, and a conscience that still survives in the most unlikely, undiscovered place…

Book Light and Color in the Outdoors

Download or read book Light and Color in the Outdoors written by Marcel Minnaert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-04-13 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of science springs from the observation of nature. In this classic book, the late Professor Minnaert accompanies the reader on a tour of nature's light and color and reveals the myriad phenomena that may be observed outdoors with no more than a pair of eyes and an enquiring mind. From the intriguing shape of the dapples beneath a tree on a sunny day, via rainbows, mirages, and haloes, the colors of liquid, ice, and the sky, to the appearance of the sun, moon, planets, and stars - Minnaert describes and explains them all in a clear language accessible to laymen. This new English edition is supplemented by 80 plates, over half of them in color, taken by the acclaimed photographer Pekka Parviainen, illustrating many of the phenomena - ordinary and exotic - discussed in the book.

Book excerpt: She thought it was too good to be true when Rhian showed up at her foster home with a DNA test claiming to be her sister. Little did Brynlee know how life-changing this revelation would be. The misplaced mound they call Halo, that her sister’s neighborhood is perched upon, was peculiar to Brynlee. Sort of a Utopian, clean-living, high-tech, all-inclusive hill with no need to go down into the small farm town below. While enrolled in the local Halo academy, she soon realized that it’s more of a training facility than an academic institution. But they’re training for peace, not war. Unaware of the chaos that’s transpiring in the world outside of the academy, Brynlee learns that the elite hillside community has been slowly making progress in attaching its sticky threads to weave a web across the nation for years. Those who fear the spider will soon discover how they need the valuable predator to survive. Once you get caught in the web of Halo, it’s impossible to get out. Unless you become the spider.

Book Cook and the Carpenter

Download or read book Cook and the Carpenter written by June Arnold and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1995-04 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's liberation sought to transform every sector of U.S. society--its educational system, culture, language, politics, and, importantly, the delivery of social services. To enable this movement, women all over the country began to establish women's centers. In New York City, women from almost every local women's liberation group took over an abandoned building in lower Manhattan on New Year's Eve, 1970. They named the building The Fifth Street Women's Building and renovated it to feed, clothe, shelter, and educate women in need. The take-over was a huge success, attracting hundreds of activists and community members. Thirteen days later, the New York City Tactical Police stormed the building, expelled the women, and ended the action. The City then tore the building down and built a parking lot on the site. June Arnold was one of the original planners and an active participant in this episode. When she got out of jail, she went home and wrote this novel about what happened. The Cook and the Carpenter, which quickly gained fame for its use of a non- gendered language, remains one of the best representations of the time period that berthed modern feminism and paved the way for lesbian communities.
