Book How Pervasive is the Product Cycle

Download or read book How Pervasive is the Product Cycle written by Joseph E. Gagnon and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper looks for dynamic patterns in international trade flows using comprehensive multilateral American and Japanese data disaggregated to the four-digit SITC level. Little evidence is found of product-cycle dynamics between 1962 and 1988. Rather, goods that begin the sample in surplus (deficit) almost always remain in surplus (deficit) throughout the sample.

Book Restructuring Japanese Business for Growth

Download or read book Restructuring Japanese Business for Growth written by Raj Aggarwal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restructuring Japanese Business for Growth consists of eighteen previously unpublished invited chapters by experts on Japanese business. It will attract both commercial and academic interest. Japanese business can be expected to continue to be of great importance in global and Asian economics, especially as the Japanese economy is the dominant economy in Asia, being larger than all other Asian economies combined. Policymakers and business people interested in understanding Japanese financial markets will find this book useful. In addition, this book should be a valuable resource for undergraduate, graduate, and executive development courses in international business, global finance, and Japanese business.

Book Pacific Dynamism and the International Economic System

Download or read book Pacific Dynamism and the International Economic System written by Marcus Noland and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume contains papers presented at the Twentieth Pacific Trade and Development Conference. The editors contribute an introductory article; a dozen additional papers are organized into three sections: the international economic system, regional institutional arrangements, and systemic implications of Pacific dynamism. In the first section John Whalley has an insightful article on GATT, and Soogil Young discusses the place of an East Asian trading bloc in a global economic system. In the next section, H. Edward English and Murray G. Smith examine NAFTA and conclude that NAFTA may foster the formation of new regional trading arrangements in the Asia-Pacific region. Peter Drysdale and Ross Garnaut survey and analyze trade in the Pacific region and see additional gains from trade liberalization in the region. The final section of this work contains articles on direct investment, the Japanese yen, human capital flows, environmental issues, and post-Cold War security implications. An excellent work for those interested in the economic dynamics of the Pacific region.

Book Empirical Studies of the Pattern of Bilateral Trade in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Empirical Studies of the Pattern of Bilateral Trade in the Asia Pacific Region written by Ahmad Fuad Rahmany and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation reports the results of three empirical studies concerning the pattern of bilateral trade among countries of East Asia and the Pacific Rim countries--the so-called 'Asia-Pacific' region. The first study tests several hypotheses concerning the determinants of bilateral intra-industry trade for a sample of 15 Asia-Pacific countries. It is concluded that similarity in relative factor endowments between two countries results in a higher share of intra-industry trade in the total bilateral trade (Sii) between them; however, that similarity in country size results in a lower Sii, which contradicts some findings of previous studies. Economies of scale were not found, while distance and tariffs were found to be significant determinants of intra-industry trade. The interesting result was that intra-industry trade appears to be characterized by vertically differentiated products, suggesting that the pattern of specialization was affected by the difference in technological capabilities between the developed and less developed countries in the region. The second study uses gravity-type models to make inferences about relative factor intensities of several manufacturing groups and to test the Linder hypothesis that the more similar the per capita incomes between two countries, the larger the trade in manufactured goods between them. It is found that for 1980-1993 there occurred no significant change in capital-labor intensities in the composition of the manufacturing sectors. This suggests that the relocation of manufacturing from developed to developing countries that occurred in search for low wage workers did not necessarily lead to less capital-intensive technologies. The Linder hypothesis was not found to be supported. The third study assesses the desirability of regionalization in the Asia-Pacific region. ASEAN was not, while APEC was found to be a natural trading bloc. This implies that geographical proximity between ASEAN countries is not sufficient to create a natural trading bloc. The strongest natural trading partners were found to be the East Asian countries and the U.S., suggesting that policies that exclude the U.S. from the East Asian trading bloc are welfare-worsening. The formation of a free trade area among a group of countries may result in a welfare gain if their ex-ante intra-bloc trade exceeds their external trade.
