Book excerpt: Why a book defending government? Because for decades, right-wing forces in this country have engaged in a relentless and irresponsible campaign of vicious government bashing. Conservatives and libertarians have demonized government, attacked basic safety net programs like Medicare, and undermined vital regulations that protect consumers, investors, workers, and the environment. This book takes on this anti-government movement and shows that most of its criticisms of this institution are highly exaggerated, misleading, or just plain wrong. In reality, American government - despite its flaws - plays a valuable and indispensable role in promoting the public good. Most government programs are working well and are actually improving the lives of Americans in innumerable ways. Democratic government is a vital tool for making our world a better place; and if we want an America that is prosperous, healthy, secure, well-educated, just, compassionate, and unpolluted, we need a strong, active, and well-funded public sector. Part I: Why Government is Good. The section of the book describes how government acts as a force for good in society. One chapter chronicles a day in the life of an average middle-class American and identifies the myriad ways that government programs improve our lives. Other chapters describe the forgotten achievements of government; how government is the only way to effectively promote public values like justice and equality; and how a free market economy would be impossible without the elaborate legal and regulatory infrastructure provided by government. Part II: The War on Government. This section of the book chronicles the unrelenting assault on government being waged by conservative forces in this country. Chapters describe how cuts in social programs and rollbacks of regulations have harmed the health, safety, and welfare of millions of Americans and how these assaults have taken place on many fronts - in Congress, the administrative branch, and the federal courts, as well as on the state and local level. Also addressed: how the right's radical anti-government agenda is out of touch with the views and priorities of most Americans, and what the real truth is about government deficits. Part III: How to Revitalize Democracy and Government. There are, in fact, some problems with American government, and we need to address these if we are to restore Americans' faith in this institution. One of the main problems with our government is that it is not accountable and responsive enough to the public. Moneyed special interests too often win out over the public interest. Chapters in this section describe this problem and how we can fix it. There are several reforms - including public financing of elections - that could help our government live up to its democratic ideals. The final chapter discusses strategies for building a pro-government coalition in this country.

Book Our Foundation Is Crumbling

Download or read book Our Foundation Is Crumbling written by Lee Birkhead and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Christian patriot's common sense review of D.C.'s political madness and nonsense, the abuse of our sacred Constitution, the degradation of our moral values and our road to recovery. The words presented in this book are an accumulation of my opinions and philosophies based on my experiences and instincts. I will warn you in advance, some opinions on both major and minor issues are going to upset many readers. I urge you to be objective, take off your blinders, form your own opinions and for goodness sake, if your opinions are that strong, write it down for posterity or for your congressman. If you can't keep an open mind and yours is already closed, then I encourage you not to read this book so we can remain friends. Many opinions are confrontational and some things said are radical and not so politically correct. These writings are not to convince you of anything but to encourage you to use your own God-given common sense and get back to decent values. However, these writings will strive to convince you of the value of the freedoms we take for granted and how those freedoms have created the greatest nation and wealth in history. If we don't get back to common sense and moral values we will lose this gift from God. The main reason I am writing my thoughts is because we are losing our country and this is my part to try to help save it. Isn't it obvious we are losing our rights of speech with the so-called "Fairness Doctrine?" We've lost so much of the Second Amendment with 20,000 useless gun control laws but we can and will lose all of the rights to protect our selves from tyranny if we don't express our objections. We've lost the freedoms I remember when I was younger, because our government representatives function like we can't think for ourselves. If you are one of those persons who think that everything is OK and the government IS on the right path by getting larger and more controlling of your life and that we exist because of their power and control, then I suggest you're not being objective. Please stop reading now and pass these words to someone else because they will not be of any worth to you. You are already lost to my cause. Since these writings are about common sense and governmental madness, moral values and how they relate to government and major issues, I think you will enjoy these somewhat famous quotes from Thomas Jefferson and the words of wisdom that JFK had to say about the primary author of the U.S. Constitution: John Kennedy said to a group in the White House, "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge that has ever been gathered at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." "My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government." Thomas Jefferson "It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debt as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save half the wars of the world." Thomas Jefferson Please note that I have purposely not used the term American when referring to U.S Citizens because even though we are Americans I wanted to distinguish us from our neighbors in South America and our North America, Canada, Mexico and others. I do not consider myself an isolationist whatever that is, but I do not want our country to lose its sovereignty because of some foolish idea of a one world order or transnationalism or a world government or globalization. We are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. When I say those words time and again, they mean something and will continue to be my oath until the day I die. I want you to feel the same. I swore the words twice in my lifetime, to uphold the laws of this nation and defend the Constitution from enemies, foreign and domestic. I have not rescinded that oath nor do I i

Book excerpt: Our government is failing us. From health care to immigration, from the tax code to climate change, our political institutions cannot deal effectively with the challenges of modern society. Why the dysfunction? Contemporary reformers single out the usual suspects, including polarization and the rise in campaign spending. But what if the roots go much deeper, to the nation's founding? In Relic, William G. Howell and Terry M. Moe point to the Constitution as the main culprit. The framers designed the Constitution some 225 years ago for a simple, agrarian society. But the government they created, with a parochial Congress at its center, is ill-equipped to address the serious social problems that arise in a complex, postindustrial nation. We are prisoners of the past, burdened with an antiquated government that cannot make effective policy, and often cannot do anything at all. The solution is to update the Constitution for modern times. This can be accomplished, Howell and Moe argue, through reforms that push Congress and all its pathologies to the periphery of the lawmaking process, and bring presidents -- whose concern for their legacy drives them to seek coherent policy solutions -- to the center of decision making. As Howell and Moe reveal, the key to effective government for modern America is a more powerful presidency. Relic is a provocative and essential book for our era of political dysfunction and popular despair. It sheds new light on what is wrong with our government and what can be done about it, challenging us to reconsider the very foundation of the American experiment.

This book will not only explain this system of make-believe—it will make you want to change it.

Book The Poverty of American Politics

Download or read book The Poverty of American Politics written by H. Mark Roelofs and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clashes between these perspectives in the political system's institutional processes brew, according to the author, "generous portions of bombast and hypocrisy, inefficiency and corruption, and all too often, violence in one form or another." He demonstrates why, with our present political structure, there is no possibility of achieving our goals. The system's ultimate poverty, he argues, is its congenital inability to comprehend, let alone reform, itself. No other book has viewed the ills of American politics so comprehensively or traced their sources so insistently to the system's theoretical design, to the character of its founding principles, and to the nature of its major institutions. With the Bicentennial of the Constitution as well as the recent collapse of Eastern European communism, many Americans are proudly proclaiming that their system of government works, despite its obvious contradictions, chaos, and corruption.

Book The Second American Revolution first 100 days

Download or read book The Second American Revolution first 100 days written by Ric Davidge, MPA and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reestablishing the balance of power between the States who conceived, articulated, and fought for the Republic – almost stopping its formation more than once due to concerns with federal power – is not easy given the structural corruption deeply imbedded in Congress and the Washington, D.C. culture, but it can and must be done. Mark Levin has identified the “clarifications” necessary in our Constitution that must be implemented via a Convention of States, but that will not fix the problem within – at least not in time. This book is a detailed, step by step strategy that can achieve this from within. In addition, the book provides specific answers to those who will object – and do so loudly. It also provides some keen insights into the D.C. culture with information few Americans know. There are preconditions to this Revolution that are essential, achievable, and identified here. Many can begin now, well before the 2016 election, but they must begin and we must have the commitment from enough States (26) to get these stepping stones set so that a new authentic constitutionally conservative President and a ‘friendly’ Congress can achieve them in just five years. It became clear at the RNC Platform Committee in 2012 that we needed something new, a very specific plan – an informed strategy, not just more speeches, not just more of the same general rhetoric we have all heard for decades. You have to do the hard work, and that doesn’t come from behind a podium. The reforms outlined in this book will achieve the rebalance and again form an even more perfect union with States in control and the federal system again limited as prescribed in the Constitution. This is an historic time, a new political time and space that will determine if America, as constructed by the States, will again prevail.

Book The Gathering of the Clan

Download or read book The Gathering of the Clan written by Thomas Richard Harry and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Walt Whitman's genius of America a common person comes an uncommon analysis of an American tragedy; the failure of its political system to produce government that truly governs, not simply rules. Average Americans increasingly are losing faith in our attenuating political parties. It doesn't seem to matter which party holds the reins of power, there's no difference in results. The status quo is locked in place, though America generally expresses dissatisfaction. The consequence: Political Independents increasing numbers of political Independents. Many people say the American Dream is no longer attainable. As an expression of lack of confidence in government, that's crystal clear; as a verdict on the ability of our political system to deliver good, effective government, that's unacceptable. The Gathering of the Clan explores the need for change in politics and shares innovative constructs to revitalize our two-party system. Thomas Richard Harry tackles the whos, whats, and whys of such issues as: Connection between public perception and the phenomenon of political Independents Roles of government and those who govern Values and ideologies and how they affect us individually and collectively Philosophical gorge between democracy and capitalism Fading relationship between political trust and political loyalty

Book The Forgotten Americans

Download or read book The Forgotten Americans written by Isabel Sawhill and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sobering account of a disenfranchised American working class and important policy solutions to the nation's economic inequalities One of the country's leading scholars on economics and social policy, Isabel Sawhill addresses the enormous divisions in American society--economic, cultural, and political--and what might be done to bridge them. Widening inequality and the loss of jobs to trade and technology has left a significant portion of the American workforce disenfranchised and skeptical of governments and corporations alike. And yet both have a role to play in improving the country for all. Sawhill argues for a policy agenda based on mainstream values, such as family, education, and work. Although many have lost faith in government programs designed to help them, there are still trusted institutions on both the local and the federal level that can deliver better job opportunities and higher wages to those who have been left behind. At the same time, the private sector needs to reexamine how it trains and rewards employees. This book provides a clear-headed and middle-way path to a better-functioning society in which personal responsibility is honored and inclusive capitalism and more broadly shared growth are once more the norm.

Book Poverty Of Amer Pol 2Nd Ed

Download or read book Poverty Of Amer Pol 2Nd Ed written by H. Roelofs and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1998-05-14 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this forceful and original work in American political philosophy, H. Mark Roelofs challenges America's complacency about its politics. He maintains that the theoretical design of the American political system is inherently flawed. He sees the system as essentially split between its social democratic, egalitarian, legitimizing self-image and its liberal democratic, elitist, operational practice. Neither of these aspects of the system is politically productive beyond its immediate functions. Roelofs's devastating and closely reasoned critique traces our nation's political ills to fundamental flaws in the very design of its founding principles, the character of its major institutions, and the basic patterns of its processes. Roelofs traces the contradictions in our political culture to American adaptations of a profoundly religious, mostly Protestant individualism and a secular Bourgeois individualism rooted in Hobbes and Locke. The clashes between these perspectives in the political system's institutional processes brew, according to the author, "generous portions of bombast and hypocrisy, inefficiency and corruption, and all too often, violence in one form or another". He demonstrates why, with our present political structure, there is no possibility of achieving our goals. With the Bicentennial of the Constitution as well as the recentcollapse of Eastern European communism, many Americans are proudly proclaiming that their system of government works, despite its obvious contradictions, chaos, and corruption. Roelofs lucidly but pessimistically contends that, unless the system is fundamentally and completely reformed, it will continue to breed hypocrisy and inefficiency, violence and military adventurism, and a systematically impoverished democratic politics.
