Book excerpt: Retirement is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be yourself and do what you want to do. It offers new possibilities for personal growth through learning, retraining, travelling and friendship. But it is also one of the biggest transitions we face, and brings huge psychological and emotional challenges. It's not surprising that many people struggle with the adjustment to a different pace of life. Not Fade Away guides the reader through these challenges: dealing with the loss of status and routine, reinventing relationships, managing money, and above all, finding new meaning and purpose. It brings together expert advice and insights from people retiring now, who speak from the heart about the lessons they've learned and the new sources of fulfilment they've discovered. By cutting a clear path through the maze of choices on offer for people retiring today – which may or may not involve giving up work completely – Not Fade Away inspires you to make up your own mind and take control of your future. And that, experts agree, is the key to a good retirement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A road trip novel from the author of Fup that “reads like Kerouac’s On the Road as it might have been written by Hunter S. Thompson” (The Plain Dealer). George Gastin is a Bay Area tow-truck operator who wrecks cars as part of an insurance scam. One of the cars he is hired to demolish is a snow-white Cadillac that was supposed to be a present for the Big Bopper, who died in the Iowa plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Gastin has a change of heart and takes off in the car, heading for Texas where the Bopper is buried. Armed with a thousand hits of Benzedrine and chased by adversaries real and imagined, Gastin navigates a road trip that covers many miles and states of mind. Traveling in time from the Beat era to the dawn of the sixties, from the coffeehouses of North Beach to the open plains of America, Gastin picks up some extraordinary hitchhikers: the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest salesman,” the Reverend Double-Gone Johnson, and a battered housewife with a box of old 45s. As the miles and sleepless hours roll by, Gastin’s trip becomes a blur of fantasy and reality fueled by a soundtrack of classic rock ‘n’ roll. “His surreal voyage into the chaos of night carries him into the heart of America’s darkest psychological landscapes. Not Fade Away shakes, rattles, and rolls.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Book excerpt: After forty years, Hammett has a worthy successor' The Times Dave Brandstetter stands alongside Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade and Lew Archer as one of the best fictional PIs in the business. Like them, he was tough, determined, and ruthless when the case demanded it. Unlike them, he was gay. Joseph Hansen's groundbreaking novels follow Brandstetter as he investigates cases in which motives are murky, passions run high, and nothing is ever as simple as it looks. Set in 1970s and 80s California, the series is a fascinating portrait of a time and a place, with mysteries to match Chandler and Macdonald. In Fadeout, Dave is sent to investigate the death of radio personality Fox Olsen. His car is found crashed in a dry river bed. But there is no body - and as Dave looks deeper into his life, it seems as though he had good reasons to disappear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey to maturity, Not Fade Away is the first part of author Ronald C. Gordon’s Andy Lerner trilogy. Andy is a teenager growing up on the cusp of Eisenhower complacency and 60's tumult, a time when Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley were at the peak of their careers. A fat, awkward, fifteen-year-old boy, Andy becomes obsessed with the trends of his generation – rock and roll, movies, dances, dates, and more, seeking freedom from the indistinct yet palpable grip of his family. As he deals with his algebra difficulties and getting to know the pretty girls in school, a chain of unfortunate events takes place, prodding him to understand who he really is. Through the help of his brother Marty, his own lifelong friends and some unexpected new ones, and Hattie Mae, the family maid, Andy learns to accept the challenges of boyhood and readies himself for heavy responsibilities at home and in school. Creating a dramatic coming-of-age tale amidst the relentless summer heat of southeast Texas, author Ronald C. Gordon conveys the fear that comes with maturity, fizzled romances, and self-discovery through elegiac, subtle yet often hilarious events which will linger in the readers’ minds, Not Fade Away.

Book excerpt: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DAVE BRANDSTETTER With a new Introduction by Michael Nava. Published fifty years ago, a time when being gay was illegal in 49 out of 50 states, Joseph Hansen’s first Dave Brandstetter novel shattered stereotypes and redefined the Private Eye novel as we know it. Five decades after its original landmark publication, Joseph Hansen’s Fadeout is as fresh and important as ever. Preceded only by a handful of gay protagonists in crime fiction, Hansen’s Dave Brandstetter, a ruggedly handsome World War II vet with a quick wit, faultless moral compass, and endless confidence, shattered stereotypes and won over a large reading audience, a feat previously considered impossible for queer fiction. Set in the mid-1960s, Fadeout centers on the disappearance of a southern California radio personalitynamed Fox Olson. A failed writer, Olson finally found success as a beloved folksinger and wholesome country raconteur with a growing national audience. The community is therefore shocked when Olson’s car is found wrecked, having been driven off a bridge and swept away in a fast-moving arroyo on a rainy night. A life insurance claim is filed by Olson’s widow and the company holding the policy sends their best man to investigate. The problem is that Olson’s body was never found. Not in the car. Not further down the river. As Dave Brandstetter begins his investigation he quickly finds that none of it adds up.

Book Not Fade Away

Download or read book Not Fade Away written by Rebecca A. Alexander and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring and moving memoir of a young woman who is slowly losing her sight and hearing yet continues to live life to its fullest potential. Even a darkening world can be brilliantly lit from within. Born with a rare genetic mutation called Usher syndrome type III, Rebecca Alexander has been simultaneously losing both her sight and hearing since she was a child, and she was told that she would likely be completely blind and deaf by thirty. Then, at eighteen, a fall from a window left her athletic body completely shattered. None of us know what we would do in the face of such devastation. What Rebecca did was rise to every challenge she faced. She was losing her vision and hearing and her body was broken, but she refused to lose her drive, her zest for life, or—maybe most important—her sense of humor. Now, at thirty-five, with only a sliver of sight and significantly deteriorated hearing, she is a psychotherapist with two masters’ degrees from Columbia University and an athlete who teaches spin classes and regularly competes in extreme endurance races. She greets every day as if it were a gift, with boundless energy, innate curiosity, and a strength of spirit that have led her to places we can’t imagine. In Not Fade Away, Rebecca tells her extraordinary story, by turns harrowing, funny, and inspiring. She meditates on what she’s lost—from the sound of a whisper to seeing a sky full of stars, and what she’s found in return—an exquisite sense of intimacy with those she is closest to, a love of silence, a profound gratitude for everything she still has, and a joy in simple pleasures that most of us forget to notice. Not Fade Away is both a memoir of the senses and a unique look at the obstacles we all face—physical, psychological, and philosophical—exploring the extraordinary powers of memory, love, and perseverance. It is a gripping story, an offering of hope and motivation, and an exquisite reminder to live each day to its fullest.

Book Freudian Fadeout

Download or read book Freudian Fadeout written by Arij Ouweneel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-13 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western culture, the psychoanalysis that has guided popular psychology for almost a century is now on the retreat. Better equipped with proven results, cognitive and evolutionary psychology has driven psychoanalysis out of the spotlight. In cultural and film studies, however, the debate between cognitive sciences and psychoanalysis remains contentious. This volume explores this state of things by examining criticism of 18 films, juxtaposing them with cognitive-based films to reveal the flaws in the psychoanalytical concepts. It pays particular attention to simulation theory, the concept that narratives "learned" from films could work in human minds as simulations for solutions to particular problems. By introducing the idea of narrative stimulation to film studies, this work argues for a different method of film critique, encouraging further research into this nascent field.

Book Not Fade Away

Download or read book Not Fade Away written by Dawn Young and published by Keywords Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not Fade Away By Dawn R Young My time in the 60's with Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and the heartbreak of forced Adoption “Not Fade Away" is the fascinating, at times heart wrenching, true life story of a young English girl which encompasses life with The Rolling Stones in Britain's early 60's and the best and worst of that cultural era. This is a gripping ‘must read' for fans of The Rolling Stones and all things British. It takes readers on a journey into the early beginnings of the Stones and also explains how forced adoption was all too common in that era. The author is a survivor who overcame abuse and losses to experience eventual love and joy. Dawn was one of only a handful of people who would go to watch The Rolling Stones play in the early 1960’s. Now, nearly 50 years down the line, their music can heard playing somewhere in the world every minute of every day. Dawn Molloy appears from time to time in books and newspaper articles as she was a girlfriend of Brian Jones who was the founder of the greatest rock and roll band in the world. He was the father of her son, Paul Andrew. Like so many other teenagers in the 60’s, Dawn was made to suffer because of a system that did not allow them a say in the fate of their children. In one way or another, that system and the mind set that went with it, failed them. It ensured that pregnant girls without a wedding band on their finger were stringently and illegally advised to place their children up for adoption. Dawn experienced rejection from a mother who lacked maternal instinct and her childhood was riddled with fear and doubt, abuse and ridicule. This English lady has met Royalty and had tea with the Queen of England. Dawn experienced the elation of her lost son finding her and the myriad emotions that came along with that and endured heart wrenching grief with the death of one of her children. She relocated from England to the USA with her husband and has had the joy and satisfaction of raising 4 children and seeing them grown and independent.

Book Not Fade Away

Download or read book Not Fade Away written by John Gribbin and published by Icon Books Ltd. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddy Holly was killed at 22 when the plane he was travelling in crashed on 3 February 1959. Although this was less than two years after Holly's first hit record, Don McLean described this as 'the day the music died.' But Sonny Curtis, Holly's friend and musical colleague, told us that the music didn't die, because 'Buddy Holly lives every time you play rock'n'roll.' Fifty years after Holly's death, his lasting influence is clear; a musical based on his life seems set to run for longer than his lifetime and artists as diverse as Blink 182 and Bob Dylan call him an inspiration. The Beatles chose That'll Be the Day by Buddy's group The Crickets as their first attempt at recording, as well as taking the idea for their name. Clearly, the music didn't die!John Gribbin, an ardent fan since he was twelve, presents this labour of love written in the spirit of Sonny Curtis' lyric, as a celebration of Holly's all too brief life, and as an introduction, for all those not around in 1959, to the man and his astonishing musical legacy. "Not Fade Away" also includes - uniquely - a full and detailed account of every Holly recording session, which any Buddy fan will devour.
