Book excerpt: Mankind always waits until they have nothing else they can do to give time to their surroundings. The life of man has and seems to always be the fault of someone else. From the beginning, he has not given consideration to anything but himself until the falland this is where God comes in. He had dominion and could not see that he had the power and rule over every little creature, even over the serpent. It is not until he is crossed over by his own mistakes will he identify that God is in charge. God has given us rule, and we blame everyone else for not accomplishing the task given to us by him. If its not the wife, its the children, the job, the lack of money, or the lack of opportunityjust to name a few things. When are we going to admit it? We are the problem. We serve a merciful God, and he cares for us more than we can describe or imagine.

And yet, in daily life few residents see the military at all -- it is hidden in plain sight. This paradox of invisibility and visibility is the subject of Oh, Say, Can You See?, which maps the power relations involving gender, race, and class that define Hawai'i in relation to the national security state. Authors Kathy E. Ferguson and Phyllis Turnbull locate and "excavate" cemeteries, memorials, monuments, and museums, to show how the military constructs its gendered narrative upon prior colonial discourses. Among the sites considered are Fort DeRussy, Pearl Harbor, and Punchbowl Cemetery. This semiotic investigation of ways the military marks Hawai'i necessarily explores the intersection of immigration, colonialism, military expansion, and tourism on the islands. Attending to the ways in which the military represents itself and others represent the military, the authors locate the particular representational elements that both conceal and reveal the military's presence and power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story of family--whether the one you inherit or the one you create--bound together and torn apart in the struggle for a better world. Change rarely comes easily or without a fight. In her much-anticipated fourth novel Beverly Gologorsky takes a close, loving look at the members of a working-class family in the Bronx, each in their own way struggling for a better world. At the heart of the story is Josie, a young woman whose fraught relationship with her family is further stretched by her commitment to anti-Vietnam War activities and her deepening relationship with a rising star in the Black Panther Party. Her brother Johnny is a police officer, rough and judgmental. Closest in age to Josie is sweet Richie, who, inexplicably to her, has just become an enlisted soldier. Her sister Celia is pulled toward activism in the women's fight for equality, but paralyzed by fear for her eldest son who may or may not have blown up an enlistment center. Their lives intertwine through acts of violence, loyalty, and, above all, the bonds of family love and loss. One thing is certain--that in the long run of life, change is inevitable.
