Book excerpt: Maine is many things to many people—a haven in a world of headaches, a fir-stippled paradise where summer comes slow and easy, a place that is heartbreaking to leave and a relief to return to. It is the way life should be. More specifically, Maine is 3,500 miles of enchanting coastline, the 5,267-foot elevation of Mount Katahdin, and of course her hardy, friendly folks. Maine Icons illustrates the quintessential symbols that make Maine so fascinating and unique. Profiled here are fifty classic symbols of this extraordinary state, revealing little-known facts, longtime secrets, and historical legends. From bean hole beans to L.L.Bean, here’s the inside story about the very things that give this state its character. Did you know that the annual Maine Lobster Festival includes a parade, a lobster-crate race, and more than 20,000 pounds of lobster cooked in the world’s biggest lobster boiler? That it was a woman, Cornelia Thurza “Fly Rod” Crosby, who became the first licensed, registered Maine Guide in 1897? Or that the earmuff was patented in the 1870s by young Chester Greenwood, who went on to be named one of America’s top fifteen outstanding inventors? For Mainers and newcomers alike, Maine Icons will be a treasured keepsake of this charming state.

Book French Indian Wars in Maine

Download or read book French Indian Wars in Maine written by Michael Dekker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering nearly a century of conflict, this history chronicles the tragic, epic struggle for the land that would become Maine. For eight decades, a power struggle raged across a frontier on the north Atlantic coast now known as the state of Maine. Between 1675 and 1759, British, French, and Native Americans soldiers clashed in six distinct wars to claim the strategically vital region. In French and Indian Wars in Maine, historian Michael Dekker sheds light on this dark, tragic and largely forgotten struggle that laid the foundation of Maine. Though the showdown between France and Great Britain was international in scale, the local conflicts in Maine pitted European settlers against Native American tribes. Native and European communities from the Penobscot to the Piscataqua Rivers suffered brutal attacks. Countless men, women and children were killed, taken captive or sold into servitude. The native people of Maine were torn asunder by disease, social disintegration and political factionalism as they fought to maintain their autonomy in the face of unrelenting European pressure.

Book Maine State Prison 1824 2002

Download or read book Maine State Prison 1824 2002 written by Jeffrey D. Merrill, Sr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 178 years, Maine State Prison peacefully coexisted with the town of Thomaston. In addition to its stately elms, the formidable brick facade overshadowed Main Street to the south and provided a stark contrast to the former sea captains' homes to the north. At the time of its closure in 2002, Maine State Prison was one of the oldest prisons still in use in the country. The decision to move from the antiquated prison to a state-of-the-art facility in nearby Warren was met with mixed emotions and even sadness. On February 12, 2002, round-the-clock operations moved Maine's most violent and dangerous prisoners, leaving behind unlocked doors and darkened cells. By June of that year, the old prison was demolished and buried in the ancient abandoned limestone quarry, although its memory continues to live on in the minds of those who knew it firsthand.

An era now opens which was far more favourable to die settlement of North America, than that of any preceding period. The country was perpetually growing in importance; and adventurers, through the increase of their knowledge and experience, became more judicious and prudent in their enterprizes. In 1620, after our Pilgrim Fathers had founded the colony of New Plymouth, seven English ships made voyages to New England for fish and fur, and eight others carried 1,095 settlers to the Virginia plantation. Observing that colony to flourish under new patents with more ample privileges, the Plymouth Company, or the other branch in the corporation of 1606, petitioned the croyn, through Gorges for a new Patent, which might prescribe a definite extent of territory, with the necessary powers and privileges; and give an exclusive right to the soil, fishery, and trade, within its limits. The king was easily moved by the entreaty; and accordingly orderedf one to be drafted which should compare with that previously granted to the...
