Book The Evolution of Development Thinking

Download or read book The Evolution of Development Thinking written by William Ascher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark book offers a comprehensive analysis of how development approaches have evolved since World War II, examining and also evaluating the succession of theories, doctrines, and practices that have been formulated and applied in the Third World and beyond. Covering all developing regions, the book offers an integrated approach for considering the entwined aspects of development: governance, economics, foreign assistance, civil society, and the military. With reference to carefully chosen case studies, the authors offer distinctive explanations for why development approaches fall short and systematically relate the evolution of development thinking to current challenges, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of key institutions and the clashes of institutional interests that have distorted otherwise sound doctrines and negatively affected development practice. In identifying the dynamics that account for shortcomings in past development attempts, and recommending a better integration of doctrines across the entire range of inter-connected development fronts, the book points to how development practice may be improved to better advance human dignity.

Download or read book Evaluating Health Projects written by Susan Stout and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the wave of decentralization that has swept through Latin America and the projected institutional changes within the governments in the region. Although it notes the ways in which decentralization implies a critique of past governing patterns, the emphasis is on such potential consequences of governmental change as the strengthening of democratic participation in government and the improvement of local public service. The book draws upon institutional experiments carried out at the state level to examine which decentralization strategies work best in Latin America. It is organized around three major requirements for the success of decentralization: * Establishing the national fiscal framework * Moving government closer to the people * Improving municipal service delivery. Tables illustrate the shift of revenues and expenditures from central authorities to intermediate levels of government.

Book Strengthening the Effectiveness of Aid

Download or read book Strengthening the Effectiveness of Aid written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation The World Bank and international donor agencies invest substantial resources and effort in development. A continuing challenge is to ensure that assistance is provided and used as effectively as possible. This book surveys recent findings on the effectiveness of aid and the steps the Bank and other development institutions are taking to assess and improve their operations. It examines specific methods for achieving better coordination within programs and among donors and brings together recommendations on how countries and agencies can improve the administration of aid. The study concludes that five conditions are essential for aid to be effective: - Ownership by the government and participation by the affected people - Strong administrative and institutional capacity - Sound policies and good public sector management - Close coordination by donors - Improvements in aid agencies' own business practices.

Book The Macroeconomic Effects of Public Investment

Download or read book The Macroeconomic Effects of Public Investment written by Mr.Abdul Abiad and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides new evidence of the macroeconomic effects of public investment in advanced economies. Using public investment forecast errors to identify the causal effect of government investment in a sample of 17 OECD economies since 1985 and model simulations, the paper finds that increased public investment raises output, both in the short term and in the long term, crowds in private investment, and reduces unemployment. Several factors shape the macroeconomic effects of public investment. When there is economic slack and monetary accommodation, demand effects are stronger, and the public-debt-to-GDP ratio may actually decline. Public investment is also more effective in boosting output in countries with higher public investment efficiency and when it is financed by issuing debt.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given Turkey's already extensive trade liberalization, a move to uniform external incentives would bring most of the benefits of full trade liberalization. Moreover, it is not enough to have piecemeal reform of tariffs or export susidies alone. Harmonizing Turkey's already low tariffs to the European Community's tariff structure will improve Turkey's welfare only if Turkey at the same time removes or reduces its export subsidies.
