Download or read book How Lumber Price Changes Affect Sawlog Values written by David G. Martens and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2In 1964, the U.S. Forest Products Marketing Laboratory of the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station began evaluating the changes in hardwood lumber prices in relation to their effect on the Appalachian hardwood sawmill industry. The thought was that such a study might provide additional clues to the causes of the rapid decline in the number of operating sawmills and the generally unfavorable rate of profit in this industry.S3.

Download or read book A Comparison of Four Survey Techniques Used in Outdoor Recreation Research written by Elwood L. Shafer and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Because of the great and growing interest in outdoor recreation, many studies are being made by private and public agencies that need information for planning use of land and facilities for recreational purposes. In these studies much attention is being given to the people who use recreational facilitieswho they are; where they come from; what they like; what they want; how much they are willing to spend. Many types of surveys are being used in studying these people. The main question in planning a survey of this sort is: What survey technique can be used that will provide the most reliable and valid results at the least cost? To get an answer that we could use in our recreation research program, we made a study of four different survey techniquesa personal interview, a handout questionnaire, an immediate mail questionnaire, and a delayed mail questionnaire. Results show that the delayed mail survey, conducted 3 months after the camping experience, gets the best results at the least cost. Our study is described here for the benefit of other research workers in outdoor recreation.S3.

Download or read book Some Effects of Paraformaldehyde on Wood Surrounding Tapholes in Sugar Maple Trees written by Alex L. Shigo and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Pills of paraformaldehyde (trioxymethylene) are commonly used in tapholes in sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum Marsh.) to increase the yield of sap collected for making syrup and sugar (2, 4, 5, 8). The explanation offered for this increase in sap yield is that microorganisms in the tapholes (7) cause premature decline and stoppage of the sap flow (1, 6), but that paraformaldehyde increases sap yield by inhibiting their growth (2). But what happens to the tree? To determine the effects of paraformaldehyde on the tissues surrounding tapholes, and on the microorganisms in those tissues, sugar maple trees were dissected and studied. This paper is a report on that study.S3.
