Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 371 In this 371st issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Fairy Tale " HOW IAN DIREACH GOT THE BLUE FALCON”. ONCE upon a time, long, long ago and far, far away, a king and queen ruled over the islands of the west, and they had one son, whom they loved dearly. The boy grew up to be tall and strong and handsome, and he could run and shoot, and swim and dive better than any lad of his own age in the country. Besides, he knew how to sail about, and sing songs to the harp, and during the winter evenings, when everyone was gathered round the huge hall fire shaping bows or weaving cloth, Ian Direach would tell them tales of the deeds of his fathers. So the time slipped by till Ian was almost a man, as they reckoned men in those days, and then his mother the queen died. There was great mourning throughout all the isles, and the boy and his father mourned her bitterly also; but before the new year came the king had married another wife, and seemed to have forgotten his old one. Only Ian remembered. One morning when the leaves were yellow in the trees of the glen, Ian slung his bow over his shoulder, and filling his quiver with arrows, went on the hill in search of game. But not a bird was to be seen anywhere, till at length a blue falcon flew past him, and raising his bow he took aim at her. His eye was straight and his hand steady, but the falcon’s flight was swift, and he only shot a feather from her wing. As the sun was now low over the sea he put the feather in his game bag, and set out homewards. ‘I am setting it on you as crosses and as spells, and as the fall of the year! That you may always be cold, and wet and dirty, and that your shoes may ever have pools in them, till you bring me hither the blue falcon on which that feather grew.’ ‘If it is spells you are laying, I can lay them too,’ answered Ian Direach; ‘and you shall stand with one foot on the great house and another on the castle, till I come back again, and your face shall be to the wind, from wheresoever it shall blow.’ Then he went away to seek the bird, as his stepmother bade him; and, looking homewards from the hill, he saw the queen standing with one foot on the great house, and the other on the castle, and her face turned towards whatever tempest should blow. Did Ian find the Blue Falcon? Did his stepmother’s curse come to fruition, and what about Ian’s curse on her? What happened on Ian’s journey? Well many things happened, some strange, some silly and some serious. To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out! Book THE ORANGE FAIRY BOOK illustrated edition

Download or read book THE ORANGE FAIRY BOOK illustrated edition written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary volume contains 33 old and forgotten folk and fairy tales including stories like The Magic Mirror, The Ugly Duckling, The Goldsmith’s Fortune, The Enchanted Wreath, The Clever Cat and many, many more. These stories originate from Jutland, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Uganda, India, Scotland, Denmark and various European countries. The stories are brought to life by illustrations from H J Ford. Herein are 8 full page colour plates, 19 full page pen and ink drawings and a further 33 in-text vignettes. There was a time when the president of the Folk Lore Society believed it was not acceptable for the editors of the day, in particular Mr Andrew Lang and Mr. Joseph Jacobs, to publish fairy books. Their reply was that they did not see any harm in it, and they were ready to 'put themselves on their country,' and be tried by a jury of children. And so they were proving the President of the FLS wrong. This book also contains many references to fairies. As to whether there are really any fairies or not, is a difficult question. Andrew Lang never saw any himself, but he knew several people who have seen them-in the Highlands-and heard their music. If ever you are near Nether Lochaber, go to the Fairy Hill, and you may hear the music your-self, as grown-up people have done, but you must go on a fine day. If fairies really do not exist, why do so many people believe in them, the world over? The ancient Greeks, the old Egyptians, the Hindus, the Chinese, the Africans and even the Native Americans claim to have seen them and it is unlikely that so many different peoples would have seen and heard them? The Editor cannot say 'good-bye' without advising children, as they pursue their studies, to read The Rose and the Ring, by the late Mr. Thackeray. He believes this book is quite indispensable in every child's library, and parents should be urged to purchase it at the first opportunity, as without it no education is really complete.

Book excerpt: War opened and closed Scotland's greatest century: a pitiless part in the defeat of Naploeon in 1815, a huge blood-sacrifice for the sake of victory from 1914. In between came the greatest contributions to the progress and happiness of the rest of mankind that the Scots have ever made - in everything from the combine harvester to the mackintosh to anaesthesia. It was a supremely successful achieving society yet one not without deep flaws, in its urban poverty, its destruction of the environment, its religious intolerance, its moral hypocrisy, its crushing of Highland culture. Michael Fry shows, with an emphasis always on the human story, how a succession of deep crises undermined the usually tranquil and prosperous surface of life in Victorian Scotland to leave a legacy of paradox that the modern nation has even today yet to overcome.

Book The Orange Fairy Book Illustrated

Download or read book The Orange Fairy Book Illustrated written by Andrew Lang and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of tales leaning toward the Scottish, Scandinavian and African. Some from the precieuses. One, "The Bird of Truth", left me wondering whether it was literary because it put the events out of order, which in my experience is a warning sign; folktales tend to recount in order. Though other than that it was a nice variant on that type. "How Ian Direach Got the Blue Falcon" shows Irish fairy tales importing the geas from their heroic literature, and I gotta admit it moves the story nicely. Other good ones include "The Enchanted Wreath. The first Fairy Book I've read so far without any overt racism in it anywhere (and it's the antepenultimate one; sigh).Look! The black characters get illustrated heroically and everything Includes 33 tales from Jutland, Rhodesia, Uganda, and various other European traditions: "The Magic Mirror," "The Two Caskets," "The Clever Cat," "The White Slipper," "The Girl-Fish, and more." 58 illustrations.
