Book excerpt: A suspenseful memoir from the real life American gangster, Frank Lucas In his own words, Frank Lucas recounts his life as the former heroin dealer and organized crime boss who ran Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s. From being taken under the wing of old time gangster Bumpy Johnson, through one of the most successful drug smuggling operations, to being sentenced to seventy years in prison, Original Gangster is a chilling look at the rise and fall of a modern legacy. Frank Lucas realized that in order to gain the kind of success he craved he would have to break the monopoly that the Italian mafia held in New York. So Frank cut out middlemen and began smuggling heroin into the United States directly from his source in the Golden Triangle by using coffins. Making a million dollars per day selling "Blue Magic"—what was known as the purest heroin on the street—Frank Lucas became one of the most powerful crime lords of his time, while rubbing shoulders with the elite in entertainment, politics, and crime. After his arrest, Federal Judge Sterling Johnson, the special narcotics prosecutor in New York at the time of Lucas' crimes, called Lucas and his operation "one of the most outrageous international dope-smuggling gangs ever, an innovator who got his own connections outside the U.S. and then sold the narcotics himself in the street." This powerful memoir reveals what really happened to the man whose career was dramatized in the 2007 feature film American Gangster, exposing a startling look at the world of organized crime.

Book excerpt: By day, Carlton Westerfield delivers cars for a leasing company, earning a modest living and arousing no suspicion. But at night, his true talent is revealed, a talent that involves murder. Carlton is a hired killer, a cautious, no-nonsense guy that crime kingpin Randall "Big Mo" Morris calls when the job has to be done right, no hitches. Carlton's neat little world is shaken when he reads of Big Mo's death over morning coffee, but that's the least of his worries. A phone call and a visit from a mysterious woman who is somehow connected to Mo's death threatens to unravel things completely. The woman, Paula Hendricks, informs Carlton that she saw Big Mo murdered after being tortured into revealing the names of the hit team hired to kill drug cartel boss Gregorio Molina. The names? Carlton Westerfield and Paula Hendricks. Carlton immediately goes into escape mode, heading to the Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas to avoid the wrath of the cartel. Against his better judgment, he takes Paula with him. The resulting adventure puts Carlton in the uncomfortable position of learning who he can trust and who he can't, a tall order for someone with the social skills of a rattlesnake.

Book Where the Hell s the Enemy

Download or read book Where the Hell s the Enemy written by Bill MacWithey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where The Hells The Enemy is the story of a small army reserve transportation unit. For those unfamiliar with transportation unit, that means, truck drivers. Now, there are far more glamorous jobs in the army, but the guys hauling supplies, ammo and troops around are about as important as any. Without the proper transportation, an army would quickly find itself mired down, unable to advance on the enemy. At least, thats how the folks assigned to this particular unit thought of themselves, even though they seldom did anything on training weekends, except read girly magazines. A number of the men are without jobs and live at a Salvation Army Center for homeless men. When Gerry Thompson retires from the regular army and joins the reserve unit, he quickly realizes their commander, First Lieutenant Larry Noble, knows as much about being a soldier as he, himself knew about being a rock singer. Which was nothing! Thompson suspected they might be deployed to the Persian Gulf, so decided he had better try to make soldiers out of the bunch of pot smoking neer do wells. A few months after joining the unit, they were deployed to California for their summer encampment so they might learn to drive the Bradley Fighting Machine. Lieutenant Noble lays out a route which will take them hundreds of miles out of the way, so they can stay a couple of days in Las Vegas. When Noble loses all his money, he sells one of their deuce and a half trucks to a rancher that he might continue to gamble. After Thompson recovers the truck and takes over command from the hapless lieutenant, they continue to summer encampment. Thompson has been extremely hard on the men to try to make soldiers of them, but they do well at Fort Ord and stay out of trouble. Thompson relents and allows a stop at Disneyland on the way back to San Antonio. He cannot help but laugh at the men, including Lieutenant Noble, because they are like a bunch of little kids at Disneyland. Then, the call comes that they have been activated for duty in the Gulf. Now, Thompson is worried! He has to get this bunch of misfits shaped up. Hell, half of them dont even have uniforms. When they arrive is Saudi Arabia, Thompson is nervous as hell theyll get into trouble after they learn there is absolutely no fraternizing with the local women and absolutely no booze of any kind allowed. But, he is pleasantly surprised, when even Anderson, the worst of the lot seems to take their job seriously, as they ferry munitions and vehicles to the border with Iraq. The ground war begins, as they are delivering Bradley fighting vehicles to the Second Armored Division. The division pulls out before they arrive and Thompson makes the decision that they should try to catch up with the 2nd to deliver the Bradleys. Of course, they become lost in the desert and wind up farther north than any allied troops were supposed to go. They are in dire need of fuel, and learn there is fuel at a scud missile site close-by. Against all odds, and against Thompsons better judgment, they do manage to take out the missile crews and fire the missiles off at an Iraqi oil refinery. Now, they all think they are heroes of the first order, but find themselves being chased across the desert by an Iraqi armored force. But, it turns out the Iraqis want to surrender rather than fight. They accidentally come across an underground bunker and destroy it by dropping a missile from the Bradley down a vent pipe. Thompson and Anderson damned near kill themselves in the effort. After an American aircraft spots them so far north in Iraq and reports it to the commanding general, Thompsons gang of misfits are ordered to the rescue of a group of army rangers trapped in a small town and surrounded by enemy armor. They enlist the

Book The Vickie M Stringer Collection

Download or read book The Vickie M Stringer Collection written by Vickie M. Stringer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Vicki M. Stringer, “the reigning queen of urban fiction” (Publishers Weekly), three exciting novels that will keep you coming back for more. Let That Be the Reason Let That Be the Reason begins when a drug dealer abandons his girlfriend Pamela Xavier, leaving her with nothing but a stack of bills, an empty refrigerator, and an impending eviction notice. Backed in a corner and with no prospects in sight, Pamela decides to get her hustle on. Transforming herself into Carmen, she learns to deal with the streets, the playas, the drug lords, and of course the law—by any means necessary. In no time, she is running a call-girl service, a fencing operation, and a drug cartel—all while still being a mom. Carmen wants money, but she also wants happiness. The problem is, she doesn’t quite understand what real happiness is and what real love means—or what it all costs. Imagine This Imagine This continues the saga of Pamela as she does jail time and has to decide who she really is: Pamela, a woman who, more than anything, loves her son and wants to be there to raise him; or Carmen, the ruthless baller, who does the crime, serves the time, and honors, at any expense, the code of the street. The Reason Why Pamela was a naive coed from Detroit, going to classes by day and clubs by night. The hottest spot was Jazzy Jay’s and that’s where one of the guys slipped his gun in her pocketbook, knowing that the police who had just descended on the club wouldn’t check the girls for weapons. She didn’t know his name or anything other than he was cute and charming. But, when she tracked him down to return his property, she found out his name was Chino, his game was hustling, and his plan was to make her his woman—and give her more than she ever bargained for out of life, love, and the pursuit of money.
