Book My Forever Heartache Four Years of Discovery with the Kalahari Bushmen

Download or read book My Forever Heartache Four Years of Discovery with the Kalahari Bushmen written by Bernard Horton and published by . This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, entrepreneur and award-winning businessman Bernard Horton decided to give up the rat-race and all the trappings of wealth and security in order to follow his heart, and live amongst the Bushman people of Botswana's Western Kalahari. He bought and converted an ex-military Land Rover 101" Forward Control (nicknamed I a bo pe - let it roar - by the Bushmen from the distinctive sound of the V8 engine), and with a friend, Dr. Murdoch Laing set about driving all the way up from Durban to Maun, Botswana - still a dusty frontier town in those days. The doctor returned to England but Bernard had found his calling and stayed. My Forever Heartache is the fascinating story of Bernard's four-year adventure which saw him become one with these gentle and inspirational people who still live in harmony with mother nature as they have done for thousands of years. As the title suggests it is also a study of how the Bushmen struggle to adapt and survive in a modern world that doesn't share their same core values, perhaps ultimately to the detriment of all of us. Bernard Horton was born in Wales, and spent many happy years in Scotland before making his home in Maun, Botswana, where he still lives with his daughter Themma. He is the founder of the Horton Crossbow empire and owner of Gidichaa Camp, a Bushman safari lodge in northern Botswana. www.gidichaa.com He is the author of The Horton Story, also published by Black Crake Books. www.blackcrakeboooks.com

Book King of the Movies

Download or read book King of the Movies written by Lon Davis and published by . This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis X. Bushman had a life like no other. Most people remember him today as the villain, Messala, in the first full-length version of Ben-Hur (1925), but he had been in hundreds of silent movies before. He was the screen's first great romantic idol in more than 300 silent films made at Essanay in Chicago, Illinois. He went from being a bodybuilder and an artist's model to a Broadway and stock company actor. He was a husband (four times), a father (six times), and a dog breeder. He signed with Metro Pictures, the forerunner of MGM, and embarked on a lucrative career as one of Hollywood's A-list stars in an era characterized by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Lon Chaney, but then his affair with actress Beverly Bayne became known by the public, and his carrier toppled. He was allegedly blacklisted by Louis B. Mayer at MGM. He transitioned to talkies, but an equally prominent career in sound films eluded him. He found work during the Great Depression as a businessman, a songwriter, a Vaudeville headliner, and an Old Time Radio performer on the CBS Radio network's long-running dramatic soap opera serial entitled Those We Love with Robert Cummings. In later years, he made guest appearances on television, playing roles on Peter Gunn, Make Room for Daddy, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, and Dr. Kildare. In 1956, Bushman appeared in a Burns and Allen episode where he played himself. He made three guest appearances on Perry Mason, and he appeared in two science fiction films, 12 to the Moon (1960) released by Columbia Pictures and The Phantom Planet (1961) released by American International Pictures. He also appeared as a villain in two episodes of the Batman television series (1966). He lived an exaggerated life, both as a free-spending multi-millionaire star and a bankrupt has-been. After all the accolades and criticisms, he was that rare kind of man who had no regrets. Lon Davis and Debra Davis' richly researched book features many photographs and illustrations that capture the glamour and excitement of Hollywood 's Golden Years. 368 pages, including a Filmography.

Book excerpt: Pamela Arnold has done it again: another fast-paced suspense thriller that slices through a multitude of dangers, always stays on track, and keeps readers intrigued. Lively seniors Biddy and Justin, with no time to unpack after returning home from an overseas assignment, are abducted and whisked away in a unique custom-designed, bullet-proof Mercedes. The action takes place between a luxurious South Australian hills estate called Landmark House and a Tokamak, an experimental machine that harnesses the energy of fusion, in Provence, France. The story embraces a multitude of interesting tech items, including Abio, a robot dog, which Justin’s dog, a Japanese Chin named Puffer, considers it nothing more than a retarded cousin that does tricks with a ball. There’s also Toots, a Google driverless car, in which Biddy traps an assassin, and Oso is a beautiful and sexy humanoid that’s been enhanced with an extra sex app. Biddy and Justin, expecting to enjoy a little R&R, are instead swept into action at the Adelaide Zoo, due to a terrorist threat. Going undercover, Biddy poses as an elderly blind woman accompanied by her seeing eye dog, which in reality is an attack dog.

  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Bombs Away written by John Vetto and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To movie critics, a bomb is unequivocally bad—something that failed artistically, failed at the box office, or both. John Vetto, who describes himself as a cinephile but (most assuredly) NOT a professional movie critic, defines the term more broadly. To Vetto, a bomb may have bombed at the box office or become a cult classic. It may be genuinely terrible or merely silly. The one thing all bombs have in common? They’re fun to watch. In Bombs Away: Fifty Old, Often Bad, and Mostly Forgotten Films, in No Particular Order, Vetto takes a deep dive into these works not to make light of them (well, not just to make light of them) but to explore their history and themes, draw connections, provide insight into human nature, and enlighten us as to how and why these cheaply-made films were created. So, grab some popcorn, dim the lights, and settle back for an edifying, entertaining journey through an underexplored corner of pop culture.
