Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solemnly Swear is retired U.S. Air Force Officer Joe Porrazzo's first, in hopefully a long line, of suspense novels. "Mr. Porrazzo's portrayal of the lead character Alex Porter gives the reader an instant connection with Porter's well-developed and believable military personality. The reader bonds with Alex, a trustworthy and incorruptible friend, and Porrazzo gives us more than enough reasons to care about what happens to him. Alex is a former U.S. Air Force special agent whose retired life isn't far removed from the dangers of his previous life as an American soldier. Riddled with guilt over the untimely death of his wife, troubled by nightmares associated with witnessing a grizzly crime scene involving a powerful mafia boss, and struggling with the obstacles of fatherhood, still Alex stands strong and resilient against the pressures of the untouchable antagonist; mobster Vince Vionelli. Mr. Porrazzo's thought-provoking storyline draws the reader in with one of the most impossible dilemmas a person (fictional or otherwise) can ever find themselves in doing what's morally right no matter what the cost or protecting oneself and the ones we love. The narration is smooth and easy to read. The dialogue is refreshingly realistic. And each chapter ends with just enough enticement to make the novel impossible to put down. If you're in the mood for a good mystery/thriller, I highly recommend, Joe Porrazzo's Solemnly Swear. The plot is unique the pace is fast the direction is unpredictable and the final pages are shocking. What a great book with which to spend a weekend! Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A powerful thriller about the ways an entire life can change in one night: A flight attendant wakes up in the wrong hotel, in the wrong bed, with a dead man—and no idea what happened. • Don't miss the acclaimed HBO Max series! Cassandra Bowden is no stranger to hungover mornings. She's a binge drinker, her job with the airline making it easy to find adventure, and the occasional blackouts seem to be inevitable. She lives with them, and the accompanying self-loathing. When she awakes in a Dubai hotel room, she tries to piece the previous night back together, counting the minutes until she has to catch her crew shuttle to the airport. She quietly slides out of bed, careful not to aggravate her already pounding head, and looks at the man she spent the night with. She sees his dark hair. His utter stillness. And blood, a slick, still wet pool on the crisp white sheets. Afraid to call the police—she's a single woman alone in a hotel room far from home—Cassie begins to lie. She lies as she joins the other flight attendants and pilots in the van. She lies on the way to Paris as she works the first class cabin. She lies to the FBI agents in New York who meet her at the gate. Soon it's too late to come clean-or face the truth about what really happened back in Dubai. Could she have killed him? If not, who did? Set amid the captivating world of those whose lives unfold at forty thousand feet, The Flight Attendant unveils a spellbinding story of memory, of the giddy pleasures of alcohol and the devastating consequences of addiction, and of murder far from home. Look for Chris Bohjalian's new novel, The Lioness!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven days. Is this wisp of time enough to save a life, a family, or even a nation? As shrewd as he is charismatic, Congressman Nathan Perry has strategically vanquished each of his opponents to emerge as the champion of the Freedom Party in the presidential race of the year 2000. He is driven by a secret agenda that allies him with a powerful, unscrupulous mentor and that threatens to divide the Union politically and racially. Clearly, Perry's meteoric rise has not been without moral compromise. Neither has it been without a desperate inner urgency. Since the death of his father, Nathan and his mother, Dr. Olivia Perry, have grappled with the specter of a generational evil that kills the firstborn Perry males at or not long after age forty. This was just the stuff of old family superstitions passed down from antebellum days...wasn't it? But now, the presidential campaign has led Congressman Perry back to his hometown, Vicksburg, Mississippi, which proudly and joyfully receives its native son. However, not all are happy about his bid for the White House. Opponents seize this time to strike, and forces for and against Nathan Perry clash--as his fortieth birthday relentlessly approaches.

Book Advances in Swearing Research

Download or read book Advances in Swearing Research written by Kristy Beers Fägersten and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any behavior that arouses, as swearing does, controversy, disagreement, disdain, shock, and indignation as often as it imbues passion, sincerity, intimacy, solidarity, and jocularity should be an obvious target of in-depth scholarship. Rigorous, scholarly investigation of the practice of swearing acknowledges its social and cultural significance, and allows us to discover and better understand the historical, psychological, sociological, and linguistic aspects (among others) of swearwords and swearword usage. The present volume brings together a range of themes and issues central to the existing knowledge of swearing and considers these in two key ‘new’ arenas, that is, in languages other than English, and/or in contexts and media other than spoken interaction. Many of the chapters analysed are based on large and robust collections of data, such as corpora or questionnaire responses, which allow for patterns of swearing to emerge. In other chapters, personally observed instances of swearing comprise the focus, allowing for a close analysis of the relationship between sociolinguistic context and pragmatic function. In each chapter, the cultural aspects of swearing are considered, ultimately affirming the importance of the study of swearing, and further establishing the legitimacy of swearing as a target of research.

Book The Curse of the Labrador Duck

Download or read book The Curse of the Labrador Duck written by Glen Chilton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an obsessive 82,000-mile quest for dead birds, how much trouble can one scientist get into? Finally, the world's leading authority on the extinct Labrador Duck, Dr. Glen Chilton, shares the story of his frenzied obsession to reveal the histories behind the mysterious bird -- a saga wherein he sets out to examine the remains of every Labrador Duck, conduct genetic analysis on every Labrador Duck egg, and visit every site where the duck was shot...with many a (mis)adventure along the way. More elusive than the Passenger Pigeon, the Dodo, or the Great Auk and breeding in places so obscure that no certain records exist of its nests, the Labrador Duck succumbed to extinction almost before anyone realized it was in decline. When Chilton began his travels, there were thought to be approximately fifty stuffed specimens, scattered among the museums of Europe and North America. However, as his search progressed, it became clear that some specimens had been lost to war and theft, while others lay hidden in far-flung collections, overseen by secretive curators. After traveling the equivalent of 3.3 times around the world with a series of oddball companions, Chilton finally began to close in on every known specimen...but not before he risked heavy-metal poisoning in Russia, swam naked in a glacier-fed stream, corresponded with a millionaire murderer, and narrowly avoided arrest in New York City. A magnificent blend of travel writing, science, detective work, and mishap, The Curse of the Labrador Duck is the zany adventure of one biologist's obsessive quest to uncover the mysteries of one of the world's most enigmatic birds.

Book Blood Sweat and Tears Becoming a Better Surgeon

Download or read book Blood Sweat and Tears Becoming a Better Surgeon written by Philip F. Stahel and published by tfm Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All surgeons want to be better surgeons... They work hard to be respected by their peers, appreciated by their patients, and valued by their communities. Most of the estimated 200 million surgeries performed worldwide every year go as anticipated, with positive patient outcomes. However, the number of surgical complications and preventable medical errors still remains unacceptably high. Why are experienced surgeons still creating so many adverse events? More importantly, what can surgeons do to better address the situation? Blood, Sweat and Tears — Becoming a Better Surgeon seeks to answer these questions. The book provides pragmatic examples on how good surgeons can grow from being technically brilliant to becoming empathetic and capable of providing safe, compassionate, and more effective patient care. Blood, Sweat and Tears — Becoming a Better Surgeon follows trauma surgeon Philip Stahel's 20-year journey from his 'rookie years' in internship and residency, to his development as a global patient safety advocate, renowned academician and teacher, and compassionate surgeon. The book touches on why our current patient safety protocols and checklists fail to keep patients safe and how a physician-driven initiative with credible leadership is needed to build a sustainable 'culture of patient safety.' Written for a wide audience and based on the paradigm that “good judgment comes from experience which comes from poor judgment”, Blood, Sweat and Tears — Becoming a Better Surgeon provides in-depth coverage of all the critical and timely components of safe surgical care, relates practical tips for improving the quality of partnerships between surgeons and patients, and offers a practical guide on how to reduce the learning curve to becoming a better surgeon. Reviews 1) I applaud Dr. Stahel for presenting a rich compilation of his honest and remarkable first-hand experiences and the collective work of doctors and health care leaders to reduce the endemic variation in medical quality that contributes to the #3 cause of death in the U.S. today — medical care itself. Marty Makary MD, Author of The New York Times bestseller, Unaccountable 2) “Blood, Sweat & Tears” is a great book, one of a kind, and destined to be a medical classic. What makes the book exceptional is the narrative about a difficult human endeavor, often done imperfectly, by humans who have been told they should be ‘perfect’. This quintessential paradox is why this book is a practical story about life and will likely be of interest and enjoyment to many outside the realm of medicine. Wade Smith MD, Co-founding Editor, Patient Safety in Surgery 3) Blood, Sweat & Tears: How to Become a Better Surgeon is a remarkable book that emphasizes empathy and communication, provocatively authored by a surgeon. However, as the reader will soon discover, Philip Stahel is not your ordinary surgeon. I strongly recommend every health care provider read this book. I further recommend this book be mandatory reading annually for every medical student, intern, resident and fellow-in-training, most especially chapters 3 and 4, which epitomize William Osler's advice, "Listen to the patient - he is telling you the diagnosis". In these 20 chapters, the many other insightful quotes alone are worth the purchase price. Jerome M.Buckley, MD Retired CEO/Chairman, COPIC Companies Associate Clinical Professor, University of Colorado School of Medicine 4) The life of a surgeon is difficult. Life and limb threatening problems do not necessarily occur at convenient times. Surgery is not for the weak as it requires physical strength, emotional stamina, and unquenchable intellectual curiosity. Underneath these prerequisites lies the most important of all surgical requirements: the patient. With his emphasis on patient care found through empathy, shared decision making, and attention to detail, Dr. Stahel is telling the surgeon of today and tomorrow about the way to quality improvement and self-fulfillment. The emphasis on empathy is a crucial but neglected part of quality improvement. Why do our patients so frequently not adhere to our instructions? Putting yourself in the patient's position creates an essential surgeon-patient bond that underlies an optimal outcome. Dr. Stahel did not write the golden rule of "love thy neighbor as thyself", but it is clear that he sees this as an essential part of the surgeon-patient partnership. Both surgeon and patient will feel this effect, and it will pay dividends for both parties in the near and distant future. It is an important but disturbing reflection that many medical students lose their empathetic qualities during their clerkship years. There are many reasons that underlie this loss including our role models, the frantic pace of clinical activities, and the lack of clear direction as to the medical student role. Importantly, Dr. Stahel gives us a path to finding our empathy by rediscovering our humanism. Relating to the janitor, the nurse, and other members of the care team as people is an important first step in understanding the common ground that we share with our patients. Letting each member of the surgical team call the professor by his first name clearly tells the staff that all are important and essential. Giving his phone number to his patients shows the trust that Dr. Stahel shares with those who trust him. As I reflect upon my own 35-year career in surgery, I remember the eagerness with which I first approached operating room days. "A chance to cut is a chance to cure" and "the only way to heal is with cold steel" were chants that my fellow residents and I would often repeat. The operating room was its own sanctuary away from many realities of patient care. With time, I have learned to appreciate other parts of patient care. In the clinic, I have a chance to know the patient as a person, and I have an opportunity to educate the patient as I would want to be educated. My path to becoming a better surgeon is far from over but my time to accomplish this is short. I truly wish that I had read such a book many decades ago as I began my life in surgery, but back then no such work was available. With Blood, Sweat, & Tears, Dr. Stahel has directed me to some needed tools that might help me reach this laudatory goal of ongoing quality improvement. I am most appreciative for his reflections and observations, and I remain hopeful that perhaps someday I might become a better surgeon. Ted Clarke, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon and CEO and Chairman of COPIC, Denver, Colorado 5) As a veteran Registered Nurse I feel that this book is a must read for anyone in health care! Dr. Philip Stahel has a very down to Earth writing style and compassionate approach to patient care. Reading this book has reinvigorated my love of nursing and passion for patient care. Kerry Olson, RN 6) Blood, Sweat & Tears is a unique book - clearly one of a kind, and surprisingly not just of interest to those who work in healthcare. The book has a captivating narrative flow and the medical aspects are very easy to understand for non-clinical/laypersons as well. I will be sending my "baby boomer" parents a copy as it becoming increasingly important for the community to understand the complexity and challenges of our current healthcare system. My take-home point from this book is that we can and we should be involved in our healthcare choices and ask important and pertinent questions. If you're like me, and you're interested in patient safety and eventually receiving high quality medical care if you ever become a patient, if you have a sense of humor, and you would like a different perspective on healthcare, this is the book for you! Nicole Morgan, MHA

Book On the Translation of Swearing into Spanish

Download or read book On the Translation of Swearing into Spanish written by Betlem Soler Pardo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audiovisual translation has attracted the attention of many researchers in the years since it became recognised as an academic discipline with an established theory of translation. For its part, cinema is one of today’s most powerful and influential media, and the vast number of US films translated for Spanish audiences merits particular academic attention. This book presents an analysis of the insults from seven films directed by the North American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino – Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Four Rooms, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill (vols. I and II), Death Proof, and Inglourious Basterds – and how these insults have been translated from English into Spanish. One of the main reasons for building a corpus of this nature was to document the way Tarantino’s work is dubbed, and, using concrete examples, to describe the reality of translation and provide linguistic material with which to study dubbing, the most widespread translation modality in Spain. In an analysis of this nature, Tarantino’s films offer an interesting opportunity from a social perspective because of the exceptional number of insults they contain: 1526 insults have been recorded, classified and analysed in the preparation for this book. The magnitude of this figure is evidence of Tarantino’s constant use of swearwords, regardless of what his audiences might think, and whether or not they might sometimes prefer not to hear such a steady stream of foul language. Furthermore, his popularity has been achieved precisely because he refuses to allow distribution companies to alter his dialogues in any way, or modify the violence of his scenes, making Tarantino’s films of particular interest to the reader.
