Download or read book The Philosophy of Tim Burton written by Jennifer L. McMahon and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952, just one year after Coach Adolph Rupp's University of Kentucky Wildcats won their third national championship in four years, an unlikely high school basketball team from rural Graves County, Kentucky, stole the spotlight and the media's attention. Inspired by young coach Jack Story and by the Harlem Globetrotters, the Cuba Cubs grabbed headlines when they rose from relative obscurity to defeat the big-city favorite and win the state championship. A classic underdog tale, The Graves County Boys chronicles how five boys from a tiny high school in southwestern Kentucky captured the hearts of basketball fans nationwide. Marianne Walker weaves together details about the players, their coach, and their relationships in a page-turning account of triumph over adversity. This inspiring David and Goliath story takes the reader on a journey from the team's heartbreaking defeat in the 1951 state championship to their triumphant victory over Louisville Manual the next year. More than just a basketball narrative, the book explores a period in American life when indoor plumbing and electricity were still luxuries in some areas of the country and when hardship was a way of life. With no funded school programs or bus system, the Cubs's success was a testament to the sacrifices of family and neighbors who believed in their team. Featuring new photographs, a foreword by University of Kentucky coach Joe B. Hall, and a new epilogue detailing where the players are now, The Graves County Boys is an unforgettable story of how a community pulled together to make a dream come true.

Download or read book Tim Burton A Cinema of Transformations written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tim Burton is now recognized by critics and audiences, as a major film director who has created a universe of his own, constantly inventive and identifiable both in terms of contents and style. Throughout a career that started in the eighties and spans more than 35 years, Burton has brought a new approach to the filmic genres he has delved into, both in animation and live-action movies. He has also acquired a form of cult status and major exhibitions have been devoted to his films and his drawings. The papers in this volume seek to offer fresh perspectives on Burton's cinema and address several issues in five sections. "Origins and Cultural Heritage" examines the roots of Burton's work, in terms of subject matter and technique. "Strange Bodies : across Genders and Genres" focuses on an essential aspect of Burton's imaginary world. "A Matter of Life and Death (Family and Trauma)" explores recurrent, obsessional themes. "Adaptations, Remakes, Re-appropriations" deals with the way in which he rewrites, recycles or parodies literary works, musicals or TV series. "Artists and the Creative/Interpretive Process" brings to the fore the staging of the artist, which implies a self-reflexive approach and an often ironical stance.
Download or read book Where Is Here written by Joyce Carol Oates and published by Harper Perennial. This book was released on 1993-09-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In dramatic, tightly focused narratives charges with tension, menace, and the shock of the unexpected, Where Is Here? examines a world in which ordinary life is electrified by the potential for sudden change. Domestic violence, fear and abandonment and betrayal, and the obsession with loss shadow the characters that inhabit these startling, intriguing stories. With the precision and intensity that are the hallmarks of her remarkable talent, Joyce Carol Oates explores the unexpected turns of events that leave people vulnerable and struggling to puzzle out the consequences of their abrupt reversals of fortune. As in the title story, in which a married couple find their controlled life irrevocably altered by a stranger's visit, the fiction in this new collection is punctuated again and again by mysterious, perhaps unanswerable, questions: "Out of what does our life arise? Out of what does our consciousness arise? Why are we here? Where is here?" Like the questions they pose, these tales -- at once elusive and direct -- unfold with the enigmatic twists of riddles and, often, the blunt shock of tragedy. Where is Here? is the work of a master practitioner of the short story.

Download or read book Disney in Wonderland A Comparative Analysis of Disney s Alice in Wonderland Film Adaptations from 1951 and 2010 written by Franziska Schütze and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Every thing s got a moral, if only you can find it . Lewis Carroll 1865. In 2015, the first edition of Alice in Wonderland will have its 150th anniversary. The novel as well as its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There have been read by people of all ages and all origins ever since. Due to the widespread success of the literary work, Lewis Carroll s novels have not only been illustrated by hundreds of artists, but also frequently adapted for film, theatre, opera, music, and other forms of art. Among these numerous adaptations are two motion pictures produced by the Walt Disney Company, which is known for warm-hearted movies for audiences of all ages. The relationship between Alice in Wonderland and Walt Disney even dates back to 1923 when he founded the famous film studio due to a distribution contract for his first completed short film called Alice s Wonderland. This thesis, however, focuses on the Disney adaptation from 1951 a 2-D cartoon animation as well as the most recent film adaptation from 2010 a combination of live-action film and computer-generated animation. Thus, the main part of this thesis constitutes a comparative analysis of both adaptations regarding the following aspects: the evolution of the visualisations, the different characters of the heroine Alice, the influences of Walt Disney and Tim Burton on the story lines and the styles of the adaptations, and the responses to both films. Thereby, the following research questions should be answered: What are the specificities of Carroll s novels? Why did it attract so many filmmakers? Why did both adaptations employ the medium of animation? Did the medium get implemented successfully? How did Walt Disney and Tim Burton affect the story lines and the styles of the adaptations? How did the heroine s character change under their influence? How did the audiences react to the adaptations? What are the reasons for that? The first theoretical part hence starts with a description of the literary model, which aims at defining the novels specificities respectively the essence Carroll tried to convey. Chapter 2 outlines the most important issues of today s adaptation discourse, since the theory of adaptation serves as the theoretical basis for the comparative analysis. In chapter 3, an overview of the medium of animation will be given, including the medium s possibilities and challenges as well as its techniques. With [...]
