Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Ferns Grow Innumerable books have been written about ferns in their mature stages of development, and many accounts exist of their earliest stages, which end with the formation of the young fern plant, but very little respecting the intervening stages seems to have been recorded. Although in these stages the fern-plant's development takes place, including the leaf-development, the literature of the subject consists of a few scattered papers only. These papers, moreover, deal mostly with individual species, and chie y with the subject of cell-growth and kindred phenomena. They scarcely touch upon the development of the form and ve nation of the leaf in each species, and in its individual aspect only, without reference to its relation to such development in other fern species. For these reasons, and in view of the important part that the form and venation of the species' leaf play nowadays in the classification of fern species, and of the fact that both often differ widely in the early stages of the leaf from their characters in the later, it is thought that to point out in this book the principal features of the development of form and venation in fern leaves, as seen in the species of the northeastern United States, will be useful, and may serve to throw light upon such development in fern species in general. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Ferns and Flowers, 1932 Soils. Some of the larger-growing Ferns can be grown with extremely good results in ordinary garden soil in a shady location, yet, if we intend to imitate Nature, it will be necessary to furnish, for many of our Ferns, better conditions than are found in the ordinary garden. In planting Ferns it is well to prepare the soil by making it very fine, then adding, if practicable, leaf - mold so as to make the soil very light and porous. If the planter does not have at his disposal a sloping piece of ground and is anxious to have Ferns in his garden, it will be well to raise the bed 2 to 3 inches in which they are planted. This will produce the drainage conditions necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fern Garden: How to Make, Keep, and Enjoy It; Or Fern Culture Made Easy Try my hand on a small volume adapted for the induction of the unlearned and unskilled in this pursuit, and here it is. Whether it will supersede any of the bad books or take lowest rank amongst them is for me a solemn problem. But I send it forth in hope that after a quarter of a century of hard work in the practical part of the subject, I may be better qualified to make a little book than some of those who, previous to writing, had acquired only a week or so of experience, and a very dim knowledge of about half a dozen species. As almost every fern in cultivation has names enough to fill a small volume, I have in every case adopted the names by which those recommended are best known in nurseries and gardens. The fearful question of nomenclature is thus avoided, and every. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Complete Book of Ferns

Download or read book The Complete Book of Ferns written by Mobee Weinstein and published by Cool Springs Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Book of Ferns is filled with botanical information, indoor and outdoor growing and care information, details on propagation, display ideas, and even craft projects. This gorgeous book is authored by Mobee Weinstein, the Foreman of Gardeners at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx and a veteran guest on the Martha Stewart Living TV show and other media outlets. Houseplants in general are in ascendance, but no category is hotter than ferns. From the otherworldly Staghorns—mounted like antler trophies in homes throughout the world—to the classic Boston Ferns and newer varieties like Crispy Wave, ferns are definitely back in fashion. And to no one’s surprise. After all, ferns are among the very oldest plants on the planet, with a long and storied history. There are tens of thousands of known varieties of ferns. In the Victorian Era, ferns created an absolute craze for more than 50 years. They re-emerged as integral home décor accessories in the '50s and '60s, and who didn’t spend time in a "Fern Bar" back in the '80s? And they are back again. This comprehensive reference starts its examination of ferns 400 million years ago, when the first species of this group of spore-reproducing plants appeared on Earth, exploring their evolution and eventual incorporation into human culture, including the powers associated with them and their practical and ornamental uses. Then, after an exploration of fern botany—its parts, how it grows, its variability in size and form, habitats, propagation, etc.—you'll learn how to green your indoor and outdoor environments with ferns. Every aspect of fern care is covered: potting/planting, watering, fertilizing, pest and disease control, and more. With this knowledge absorbed, explore creative planting projects, like terrariums, vertical gardens (living walls), mixed tabletop gardens, and moss baskets. To make your survey of ferns complete, create pressed fern art, fabric wall hangings with chlorophyll-stained designs, cyanotypes, and hand-made fern-decorated paper. In the end, you will understand why this ancient plant class continues to be all the rage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fern Growing: Fifty Years' Experience in Crossing and Cultivation; With a List of the Most Important Varieties and a History of the Discovery of Multiple Parentage, Etc The small-leaved Fuchsias were crossed with Fuchsia fulgens, and a hybrid obtained, named Polyhymnia, which has a small leaf of the pale colour of fulgens, and a long tubular flower with a large corolla also of the same colour as fulgens (the pollen of this would never cross with another Fuchsia). By using both Fuchsias as seed-bearers, it was apparent that the habit and form of leaf copied the seed-bearer, and the flower that of the male. In Pansies the endeavour was to improve the form and size of the flower, and to obtain a more robust constitution, also to raise a Blue Pansy, which was then a desideratum; a Blue Pansy was raised (the first year), and is known by the name of Imperial Blue. Twenty-four seedling pansies competed with seven other exhibits at the Royal Botanic Society, and they won the First Prize and the Silver Medal against all the named well-known varieties of the other exhibitors. With the Cactus, a scarlet was crossed with a white one; there are a number of seedlings, but they have not yet bloomed. From the Dahlia crosses have resulted the new single Cactus, and other forms with lily-like petals. The Aquilegia has been crossed with a Clematis, and Clematis-like flowers have been produced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure and Life-History of the Hay-Scented Fern Aside from certain personal interests and Opinions, the impulse to the present investigation came from a study of recent papers by Jeffrey, Boodle, and gwynne-vaughan. But since we shall never know the true relations of a plant to its surroundings until we have worked out its complete life history, it seemed to me very desirable to have all of our knowledge of this species collected into a unit. Therefore the study was carried beyond the problems suggested by the papers referred to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Study of the Biology of Ferns by the Collodion Method

Download or read book The Study of the Biology of Ferns by the Collodion Method written by George Francis Atkinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of the Biology of Ferns by the Collodion Method: For Advanced and Collegiate Students The author was led to the preparation of this little work by the. success which attended his efforts in applying in his classes the collodion method to the preparation of the very delicate tissues of ferns, and especially to the infiltration of prothallia, without shrinkage. A class of nine students sectioned prothallia with ease and accuracy, making permanent microscopic preparations showing various stages of development of the sexual organs and the embryo, besides good series showing the development of the sporangia and spores. The first suggestion was the preparation of a simple laboratory guide giving directions for preparing the various tissues, accompanying this with a few illustrations, so far as possible made from preparations put up by the students in their regular work, and some descriptive matter which would be helpful to the student in mastering the detail of structure and development. It seemed desirable to the author that some features in the development not represented by specimens selected from the work of the students should be included. Accordingly, he was led to a protracted 7 Study of various phases of development, since it was desirable that all illustrations should be original, and that those of sections should be from preparations put up by this method. The work thus grew, since several questions arose which it seemed important to enquire into quite closely. Especially the question of the structure of the- annulus in the various orders of ferns, and the function of the different i.V . parts of the sporangium in the dispersion of the spores, called for study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Connecticut Growing Without Cultivation The project of an accurate and authoritative catalogue of all the plants known to grow without cultivation in Connecticut originated among several enthusiastic botanists who understood the value of records founded upon careful study of the flora in the field as well as in the herbarium. To arouse the widest possible interest in the undertaking the Connecticut Botanical Society was organized in January, 1903, for the chief purpose of accumulating and recording this knowledge, and committees were appointed to gather and collate all available data bearing upon this particular line of research.
