Overall, physical activity was found to be directly related to work engagement. Specifically, participants reporting higher levels of physical activity also reported higher levels of work engagement. Additionally, diet was significantly related to physical activity, self-esteem, and self-efficacy such that a healthier diet was associated with higher levels of all three of these variables. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Selected college students were recruited as they entered a southern Illinois fitness facility. Mean age of participants was 24.13+.036. Participation consisted of completing a series of surveys that measure exercise self-efficacy, self-motivation to exercise, and physical activity behavior over the two-week span prior to participation. Exercise self-efficacy was recorded on a 0-20 scale. Mean scores were 14.18+3.50. Self-motivation to exercise was recorded on a scale ranging from 7-35. Mean self-motivation scores were 24.38 + 3.93. Physical activity was measured in number of days participants reported being moderately to vigorously physically active in the two weeks prior to their participation. The theoretical range of scores was 0-14. Mean physical activity scores were 7.81 + 3.15. Correlation analysis revealed positive moderate correlations among all three variables (self-efficacy to physical activity, r = .462; self-motivation to physical activity, r = .421; self-efficacy to self-motivation, r = .411). This book was released on 2014 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this 12-week pre-post design study was to assess the impact of Motivational Interviewing via Co-Active Life Coaching (MI-via-CALC) on task self-efficacy, barrier-specific self-efficacy, self-esteem, and 12-week study duration engagement in physical activity (PA) for 25 women between the ages of 30 and 55 years. Participants were assessed quantitatively using the previously validated McAuley Exercise-Specific Self-Efficacy Scale (EXSE), McAuley Barrier-Specific Self-Efficacy Scale (BARSE), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF) at pre-, mid-, and postintervention. Four one-way repeated measures ANOVAs were completed for each scale, and positive differences in barrier-specific self-efficacy were detected between pre- and post intervention, and statistically significant differences in self-esteem between pre- and postintervention were found. No statistically significant differences were found in participants' task self-efficacy scores and IPAQ scores, although scores in both increased by the end of the study. Participants Body Mass Index (BMI), waist, and hip circumferences were also quantitatively measured at pre- and post-intervention. Paired t-tests were completed for each measure, and statistically significant decreases in weight, waist, and hip circumferences were detected. MI-via- CALC is an encouraging approach for women who are seeking a more physically active lifestyle, and additional research on a larger scale is recommended.

This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two decades, the concept of student engagement has grown from simple attention in class to a construct comprised of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components that embody and further develop motivation for learning. Similarly, the goals of student engagement have evolved from dropout prevention to improved outcomes for lifelong learning. This robust expansion has led to numerous lines of research across disciplines and are brought together clearly and comprehensively in the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement. The Handbook guides readers through the field’s rich history, sorts out its component constructs, and identifies knowledge gaps to be filled by future research. Grounding data in real-world learning situations, contributors analyze indicators and facilitators of student engagement, link engagement to motivation, and gauge the impact of family, peers, and teachers on engagement in elementary and secondary grades. Findings on the effectiveness of classroom interventions are discussed in detail. And because assessing engagement is still a relatively new endeavor, chapters on measurement methods and issues round out this important resource. Topical areas addressed in the Handbook include: Engagement across developmental stages. Self-efficacy in the engaged learner. Parental and social influences on engagement and achievement motivation. An essential guide to the expanding knowledge base, the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement serves as a valuable resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in such varied fields as clinical child and school psychology, educational psychology, public health, teaching and teacher education, social work, and educational policy.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Work Engagement Motivation and Self Determination Theory

This book was released on 2014-06-09 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-determination theory is a theory of human motivation that is being increasingly used by organizations to make strategic HR decisions and train managers. It argues for a focus on the quality of workers' motivation over quantity. Motivation that is based on meaning and interest is showed to be superior to motivation that is based on pressure and rewards. Work environments that make workers feel competent, autonomous, and related to others foster the right type of motivation, goals, and work values. The Oxford Handbook of Work Motivation, Engagement, and Self-Determination Theory aims to give current and future organizational researchers ideas for future research using self-determination theory as a framework, and to give practitioners ideas on how to adjust their programs and practices using self-determination theory principles. The book brings together self-determination theory experts and organizational psychology experts to talk about past and future applications of the theory to the field of organizational psychology. The book covers a wide range of topics, including: how to bring about commitment, engagement, and passion in the workplace; how to manage stress, health, emotions and violence at work; how to encourage safe and sustainable behavior in organizations; how factors like attachment styles, self-esteem, person-environment fit, job design, leadership, compensation, and training affect work motivation; and how work-related values and goals are forged by the work environment and affect work outcomes.
