Book II. c. xviii., says: I have written seven books on Baptism against the Donatists, who strive to defend themselves by the authority of the most blessed bishop and martyr Cyprian; in which I show that nothing is so effectual for the refutation of the Donatists, and for shutting their mouths directly from upholding their schism against the Catholic Church, as the letters and act of Cyprian. Book The Duty Circumstances and Benefits of Baptism

Download or read book The Duty Circumstances and Benefits of Baptism written by Thomas Barker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duty, Circumstances and Benefits of Baptism: Determined by Evidence There may be some matters of opinion, wherein a Man may safely suspend his judgement, if he finds them not clearly revealed, or too deep for his understanding or leisure; and may find no difficulties in acting as a good Christian, though he be not fully satisfied about the meaning of some such propositions. But in Baptism, which is a point of Practice, the cafe is otherwise; it is a thing which either ought to be practised, or it ought not: either Infants should be baptized, or it should be delay'd till they grow up: the method also either ought to be by dipping or not. Many such cafes might be put, wherein a man who is not satisfied which is right, will be in a great strait, if a cafe happens wherein he mud act either one way or other. It was chiefly on this account that I examined the matter; and in the search I aim'd to keep clear of all prejudice, which like an Ignis fatuus is so apt to mislead men; ask'd of God assistance in my enquiry, and endeavour'd to conform my opinion to the evidence, not to reconcile the evidence to my opinion. Why is it required for church membership? And how should churches practice baptism?

Download or read book Believer s Baptism written by Thomas R. Schreiner and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is believer’s baptism the clear teaching of the New Testament Scriptures? What are the historical and theological challenges to believer’s baptism? What are the practical applications for believer’s baptism today? Volume two in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons addresses these compelling questions. Indeed, Believer’s Baptism begins with the belief that believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism or other faith proclaiming methods) is the clear teaching of the New Testament. Along the way, the argument is supported by written contributions from Andreas Kostenberger, Robert Stein, Thomas Schreiner, Stephen Wellum, Steve McKinion, Jonathan Rainbow, Shawn Wright, and Mark Dever. Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

Book Why Do We Baptize Infants

Download or read book Why Do We Baptize Infants written by Bryan Chapell and published by Basics of the Reformed Faith. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My goal in this little book is pastorally to explain the scriptural foundation for infant baptism. To do this, I will first present the biblical support for infant baptism as I have presented it in new members' and church officer training classes over the past twenty-five years. Then I will conclude by offering words of explanation that I have often used as a pastor during the administration of the ordinance. My goals are to help explain why we should baptize the infants of believing parents and also to help pastors better to know how to administer the sacrament in ways that are meaningful and helpful for their churches. Thus, I plan to present this material in terms that are accessible to laypersons and to leave technical discussions to able scholars in other books."

Book How My Mind Has Changed

Download or read book How My Mind Has Changed written by David Heim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, which continues a renowned series of essays published in the Christian Century, thirteen prominent Christian theologians speak--in unusually personal voices--of their journeys of faith and of the questions that have shaped their writing and scholarship. Reflecting a variety of theological positions and approaches, these essays feature decisive encounters with prayer, scriptural tradition, struggles for justice, and religious and cultural diversity. Some of these "changes of mind" include a change in denominational allegiance, others reflect a shift in method or emphasis prompted by experiences inside or outside the church. Some of the essays display a long-term theological project that unfolds or deepens in changing circumstances. All display the renewed vitality of theology in the postmodern context. Contributors include Paul Griffiths, Sarah Coakley, Mark Noll, Nicholas Wolterstorff, Carol Zaleski, Kathryn Tanner, Scott Cairns, Robert Jenson, Emilie Townes, Peter Ochs, David Ford, Douglas John Hall, and Max Stackhouse.
