The alarming result of Reading Evaluation Test conducted by Grade One adviser in Pili Elementary School describes the reality that the teachers are facing now. If this problem will not be solved, it will continue and reach to higher grades. In her own class, the author has seen how pupils struggled in reading especially in the area of reading comprehension. The result of the 2018-2019 Phil IRI challenged the researcher to conduct a research pertaining on reading stories and its effects on the oral language and comprehension of Grade One pupil since most children define themselves as good or poor readers during first grade. School children especially in the primary level learn to love the sound of letters through listening a story before they notice the existence of printed letters/words on a page of a book. Reading stories aloud with them expands their understanding and excites their imagination. Through stories, the pupils enjoy and experience a lifelong love of books. In addition, various stories help the pupils develop their listening skills especially understand language/words which they encounter in daily life. Book excerpt: Conducted as part of the 1992 Integrated Reading Performance Record (IRPR), a study investigated the oral reading proficiency of a subgroup of students participating in the 1992 reading assessment conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Subjects, 1,136 fourth graders, read aloud one passage and were audiotaped as they responded to a series of questions about habits and attitudes related to both instructional and recreational reading. Subjects also completed measures of fluency and comprehension. Major findings were that (1) much can be learned and documented about children's abilities by listening to them read aloud; (2) 55% of the subjects were considered to be fluent, but only 13% could be described as consistently reading with appropriate phrasing and with at least minimal expressiveness; (3) oral reading fluency demonstrated a significant relationship with reading comprehension; (4) fluent reading appeared to be related to certain literacy activities; (5) 57% of the students were at least 96% accurate in their oral reading of the passage; (6) 61% of the students read the passage at a rate of at least 100 words per minute; and (7) accuracy and rate displayed some relationship to reading fluency. The recipients of the said program are the 84 grade four pupils who were categorized under the frustration level after the Phil-IRI (Philippine Informal Reading Inventory) was conducted. Post test result seems to indicate that the participants’ reading comprehension level improved to instructional level since their scores range between five to seven. Moreover, the t-test computed value suggests that there is a significant difference on the participants’ pre-test and post test results. Hence, with the seemingly successful outcome of the program, S. Elementary School deem to continue the program even without budget allocation from the Department of Education (DepEd). Reading plays a vital role to every individual as it is the key to literacy. Pardo suggests in his study that is important for pupils to acquire decoding skills, fluency skill, background knowledge, vocabulary, motivation, and engagement to develop good comprehension skill. Moreover, Dougherty-Stahl suggests that effective reading comprehension is the culmination of mastering vocabulary, phonics, fluency, and reading comprehension skills.

He became well-known on account of various concepts that he created such as the Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis, the Monitor Hypothesis, the Affective Filter Hypothesis, the Input Hypothesis and the Natural Order Hypothesis. These concepts play an important role in the study of second language acquisition, but they are also seen as somewhat controversial in the field of SLA. At the beginning of 2009, an article was published in which Krashen expands upon his own Input Hypothesis, also known as the Comprehension Hypothesis. A critical look will be taken at Krashen’s statements in which the Comprehension Hypothesis will be explored and opposing theories and approaches will be discussed. There will also be a focus on what can be inferred from the Comprehension Hypothesis and the discussion of this hypothesis. A conclusion will be drawn as to what this means for second language education at school. The goal of this paper is to present the controversy surrounding Krashen’s Comprehension Hypothesis by exploring its weaknesses and providing an alternative and critical perspective.
