Book Self Contained Railway Motor Cars and Locomotives

Download or read book Self Contained Railway Motor Cars and Locomotives written by Raymond S. Zeitler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Self-Contained Railway Motor Cars and Locomotives: Prepared Especially for the Instruction and Training of Students of the American School Long Period of Development. Since the advent of the steam locomotive, inventors and designers have turned their attention toward the production of railway cars in which the power plant is self-contained. All forms of motive power have been tried in many and various combinations: steam, with the flash boiler and high pressure - coal and oil fired; electric motors driven by storage batteries; compressed air; and the internal-combustion engine, with combination drives of every sort. These drives may consist of electric generators and motors, mechanical transmissions with spur gearing and clutches, electro-mechanical combinations, and friction drives. The hydraulic transmission has also been tried, but little has been done with it, owing, no doubt, to the fact that designers of self-contained cars are for the most part unfamiliar with hydraulic principles and their application to power transmission. The self-contained cars of the past favored the steam engine design, with the engine mounted on the trucks and the boiler within the car body. This, of course, was an adaptation of the steam locomotive in smaller units to individual cars and was used before the internal-combustion engine was developed. This feature is still found in practically all the modern steam self-contained cars and takes 'from 10 to 15 feet of valuable space within the car body for engine room and does not permit a passage between cars when two or more motor cars are coupled together in a train. European countries have a number of these cars still in use and have been rather successful with them but are, how ever, rapidly adopting those using the internal-combustion engine, owing to its larger radius of Operation and economies. Book From Small Town to Downtown

Download or read book From Small Town to Downtown written by Lawrence A. Brough and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewett Car Company was born in the heyday of the electric railway boom in the 1890s. The company gained an excellent reputation for its elegant, well-built wooden cars for street railway companies, interurban lines, and rapid transit service. Cities large and small used Jewett cars, including New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. Many Jewett cars found their way to Indiana and many of the interurban lines employed the graceful, arch-windowed wood interurban that Jewett was famous for.Automobile competition and the problems of competing with much larger car builders, such as J.G. Brill and the St. Louis Car Company, signaled the beginning of the end. The company was offered the opportunity to produce munitions for World War I, but refused. The reason: the major source of finance for Jewett was a German nationalist banker from Wheeling, West Virginia, who refused to have the company do anything to harm Germany. As a direct result of that action, the Jewett Car Company failed.

Book Traveling Publicity Campaigns

Download or read book Traveling Publicity Campaigns written by Mary Swain Routzahn and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traveling Publicity Campaigns: Educational Tours of Railroad Trains and Motor Vehicles In the endeavor to spread information widely and well a multitude of ventures have been carried on in recent years. Interesting among these has been the combining 4 of educational material and activities on the one hand with modern facilities for transportation on the other - the putting of exhibits, demonstrations, motion pictures, and other campaigning equipment on railroad trains, trolley cars, and motor trucks so that they may tour a whole city, a county, or cross a continent. A glance at the appendix to this volume will show how extensive this form of educational effort has become. Beginning a dozen or more years ago with trains which showed improved methods of farming the list includes trains for teaching health, sanitation, safety, and food saving; trolley cars carrying exhibits on child welfare; and automobile trucks equipped to give motion picture shows on health and other subjects. Recently some of the trucks have also carried equipment for demonstrating methods of food canning, or for dispensary service. While the traveling campaign centering in the railroad car has had the longer history, developments in the educational use of the motor truck have been of such number and variety as to indicate, if one may venture in probabilities, relatively greater future activity for it.
