Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from City Planning Housing, Vol. 2: Political Economy and Civic Art Our fathers and forefathers believed implicitly in liberty as the unfailing boon and saviour in every emergency: in economic liberty which means free competition; in political liberty which means democracy, both of which, however, are helpless without some form Of national planning - a basic conception of the American Constitution. It was this faith that gave our fathers inspiration and strength for mighty achievements. They marched forwards and upwards in almost every field Of science, of economics, Of culture. Today this faith is considered to be mere delusion. Yet with its disappearance there vanished both strength and prosperity and we stand today aghast, confronted with the possible downfall of our civilization, faced with the prospect Of falling back into poverty, servitude and barbarism. Yet there is one shining ray of hope which, if we grasp it, can prevent the imminent cataclysm. This hope lies in a rationally planned society rather than in a growth of purely natural forces. Book Homes in City and Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Homes in City and Country Classic Reprint written by Russell Sturgis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homes in City and Country The picture on p. 4 gives the exterior of such a house, taken from one of those now standing on the north Side of Washington Square. The only discrepancy between plan and exterior View is that the latter has a more elaborate entrance; the doorway proper more deeply recessed and decorated with wooden col umns within the recess, while a marble porch decorates the opening in the house-wall. In Baltimore and the more Southern cities a Very different plan of house, and one more nearly approaching the suburban type, was usual. Plan 2 shows the ground-floor of such a house of the smaller and cheaper sort, and it will be seen that such a plan presupposes lower prices for land and the possibility of using, for an eight-thousand or a ten-thousand dollar house, a larger, or at least a wider, lot than New York allowed to a house of twice the cost. The scarcity of suitable homes for working men is the starting point. What is true of one industrial center is true of the next, and so on through the whole chain of mill and factory towns, steel and mining centers throughout the country. A sporadic movement for better homes for working men started some years ago. Port Sunlight, England, may be hailed as a pioneer and recently here and there in the United States employers of large numbers of men, reading the signs of the times, animated in part by a philanthropic spirit, and influenced by the economic side of the situation, have in stituted small colonies for housing their help, near their industrial plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from City Architecture: Or Designs for Dwelling Houses, Stores, Hotels, Etc To assist the development of the taste for ornamental building, now prevalent in this large and increasing metropolis, as well as in the other important cities of the Union, by offering to the Architect, Builder, and Capitalist, a variety of novel designs and adaptations of the street-archi tecture of Rome, Florence, and Venice - is the object of the present work. The Italian, now the fashionable style for city edifices, was the peculiar taste of the author, derived from a professional tour on the continent of Europe, long before it had superseded the pure Greek style; which, how ever beautiful in itself, has been proved by experience to be unproductive of any original combinations, and ill adapted to modern uses and require ments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from City Planning: With Special Reference to the Planning of Streets and Lots Finally, and doubtless of more importance than all the rest, has been the splendid and inspiring progress which everywhere is taking place in the fast unfolding science and eager practice of city building - progress in reasonableness, beauty, and fitness. As a result of all this, the original book - published in 1911 as The Width and Arrangement of Streets, in an edition which has been since exhausted - has been so amplified, revised, and rearranged that a reader will not be impressed by the presence of the old material. Yet it is all here-though buried under the new. The book, as an exponent of the cause of more rational methods of street platting, has definite mission. But it is hoped that it will prove more than simply propagandist. It is designed, in insist ence upon the less spectacular but more efficient phases of city planning, to help in a practical way the real estate platter - be he owner, dealer, city engineer, or landscape architect. Its theme is that in the platting of streets he will best serve himself who best serves his community. Thus it would promote good housing. Book Neighborhood

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emily Talen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2018-12-27

Download or read book Neighborhood written by Emily Talen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term neighborhood has been reduced to a word for a convenient geographical locator. In fact, most cities claim to be compiled of neighborhoods, but this strays far from the term's original meaning - a spatial unit that people relate to. Neighborhood seeks to dispel this common misconception by integrating a complex historical record and multidisciplinary literature to produce a singular resource for understanding what is meant by neighborhood. Emily Talen provides a multi-dimensional, comprehensive view of what neighborhoods signify how they're idealized and measured, and what their historical progression has been. Talen balances perspectives from sociology, urban history, urban planning, and sustainability among others in efforts to make neighborhoods compatible with 21st century ideals. If neighborhoods are going to play a role in the future of the city, we need to know what and where they are in a more meaningful way. Neighborhoods need to be more than a label and more than a social segregator. For those living in the undefined expanse of contemporary urbanism-which characterizes most of American cities-can the neighborhood come to be more than a shaded area on a map?

Book Shelter for Living Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shelter for Living Classic Reprint written by Ernest Pickering and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shelter for Living This book was written primarily for students in schools of architecture and home economics, and for architects, builders, and prospective home owners. Although it is directed chiefly to those who plan, build, remodel, and occupy, or h0pe to occupy, single-family detached dwellings, it should be of. Value to those who must select, evaluate, and live in rented houses or apartments. The text and illustrations are, therefore, presented as a means of teaching basic principles which may be applied to the design and choos ing of various kinds of habitations - single or multiple, inexpensive or medium-priced. Even though the book deals principally with the problems associated with home ownership in general, it does not neglect those other aspects of shelter. It emphasizes the necessity of visualizing the relationship of single and multiple dwellings to a city and regional plan. It calls attention to the need for decent habitation for those in the lower-income brackets and also to the limitations and the possibilities of low-cost and low-rent housing. While concentrating upon a phase of housing concomitant with the interests of those who own, or expect to own, their homes, it presents an analysis of those other types of shelter needed by the remainder of our population. Whenever advisable the Commission will send, without cost to a community, a housing expert to conduct such surveys.
