Download or read book Effect of the Northern Fowl Mite Ornithonyssus Sylviarum Canestrini and Fanzago on White Leghorn Roosters written by Joyce Ann De Vaney and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of the northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago), on body weight, reproductive potential and hematology of White Leghorn roosters were studied. Mean body weight was approximately 100 g. less for the mite infested roosters than for the uninfested roosters 4 weeks after they were infested with the northern fowl mite. Both groups increased in weight throughout the 26 weeks of the test but the differences in weight remained. Reproductive potential studies showed that after moderate populations of mites (101-1,000 mites/rooster) were observed, the volume of seminal fluid decreased. Four weeks before the test ended, one half of the infested roosters produced an average of less than 0.1 ml. of seminal fluid per week while the other half showed a decrease of 0.07 ml. in volume of seminal fluid produced when compared with the controls. Sperm concentration of mite infested roosters increased as the volume of seminal fluid decreased but was not statistically different from the controls. Motility and live/dead ratios of sperm did not show significant differences. Serum testosterone levels were statistically different between mite infested and control roosters. Hematology studies showed the greatest decrease in RBC and PCV occurred from the 4th to the 8th weeks when infestations were initially increasing rapidly. Mean Hemoglobin concentrations for the infested birds were consistently lower but not statistically different from the controls. No specific anemia could be attributed to mite populations as all hematological values were within normal ranges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egg Innovations and Strategies for Improvements examines the production of eggs from their development to human consumption. Chapters also address consumer acceptance, quality control, regulatory aspects, cost and risk analyses, and research trends. Eggs are a rich source of macro- and micronutrients which are consumed not only by themselves, but also within the matrix of food products, such as pastas, cakes, and pastries. A wholesome, versatile food with a balanced array of essential nutrients, eggs are a stable of the human diet. Emerging strategies entail improvements to the composition of eggs via fortification or biological enrichment of hen's feed with polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, or minerals. Conversely, eggs can be a source of food-borne disease or pollutants that can have effects on not only human health, but also egg production and commercial viability. Written by an international team of experts, the book presents a unique overview of the biology and science of egg production, nutrient profiling, disease, and modes for increasing their production and quality. Designed for poultry and food scientists, technologists, microbiologists, and workers in public health and the food and egg industries, the book is valuable as an industrial reference and as a resource in academic libraries. Focuses on the production and food science aspects of eggs Includes a broad range of microbial contaminants, their risks, and prevention, as well as non-microbial contaminant risks Presents analytical techniques for practical application

Book Practical Food Safety

Download or read book Practical Food Safety written by Rajeev Bhat and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have witnessed an upsurge in incidences relating to food safety issues, which are all attributed to different factors. Today, with the increase in knowledge and available databases on food safety issues, the world is witnessing tremendous efforts towards the development of new, economical and environmentally-friendly techniques for maintaining the quality of perishable foods and agro-based commodities. The intensification of food safety concerns reflects a major global awareness of foods in world trade. Several recommendations have been put forward by various world governing bodies and committees to solve food safety issues, which are all mainly targeted at benefiting consumers. In addition, economic losses and instability to a particular nation or region caused by food safety issues can be huge. Various ‘non-dependent’ risk factors can be involved with regard to food safety in a wide range of food commodities such as fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, poultry, meat and meat products. Additionally, food safety issues involves a wide array of issues including processed foods, packaging, post-harvest preservation, microbial growth and spoilage, food poisoning, handling at the manufacturing units, food additives, presence of banned chemicals and drugs, and more. Rapid change in climatic conditions is also playing a pivotal role with regard to food safety issues, and increasing the anxiety about our ability to feed the world safely. Practical Food Safety: Contemporary Issues and Future Directions takes a multi-faceted approach to the subject of food safety, covering various aspects ranging from microbiological to chemical issues, and from basic knowledge to future perspectives. This is a book exclusively designed to simultaneously encourage consideration of the present knowledge and future possibilities of food safety. This book also covers the classic topics required for all books on food safety, and encompasses the most recent updates in the field. Leading researchers have addressed new issues and have put forth novel research findings that will affect the world in the future, and suggesting how these should be faced. This book will be useful for researchers engaged in the field of food science and food safety, food industry personnel engaged in safety aspects, and governmental and non-governmental agencies involved in establishing guidelines towards establishing safety measures for food and agricultural commodities.

Book Commercial Chicken Meat and Egg Production

Download or read book Commercial Chicken Meat and Egg Production written by Donald D. Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial Chicken Meat and Egg Production is the 5th edition of a highly successful book first authored by Dr. Mack O. North in 1972, updated in 1978 and 1984. The 4th edition was co-authored with Donald D. Bell in 1990. The book has achieved international success as a reference for students and commercial poultry and egg producers in every major poultry producing country in the world. The 5th edition is essential reading for students preparing to enter the poultry industry, for owners and managers of existing poultry companies and for scientists who need a major source of scientifically based material on poultry management. In earlier editions, the authors emphasized the chicken and its management. The 5th edition, with the emphasis shifted to the commercial business of managing poultry, contains over 75% new material. The contributions of 14 new authors make this new edition the most comprehensive such book available. Since extensive references are made to the international aspects of poultry management, all data are presented in both the Imperial and Metric form. Over 300 tables and 250 photos and figures support 62 chapters of text. New areas include processing of poultry and eggs with thorough discussions of food safety and further processing. The business of maintaining poultry is discussed in chapters on economics, model production firms, the use of computers, and record keeping. Updated topics include: breeders and hatchery operations; broiler and layer flock management; replacement programs and management of replacements; nutrition; and flock health. New chapters address flock behavior, ventilation, waste management, egg quality and egg breakage. Other new features include a list of more than 400 references and a Master List of the tables, figures, manufacturers of equipment and supplies, research institutions, books and periodicals, breeders, and trade associations. Commercial growers will find the tables of data of particular interest; scientists will be able to utilize the extensive references and to relate their areas of interest to the commercial industry's applications; and students will find that the division of the book into 11 distinct sections, with multiple chapters in each, will make the text especially useful.
